Smith is back and they have 8 defencemen, whom they don't want to waive, plus Bouchard earning playing time.

Basically the question is which risk sounds worse:

Getting stuck with your pants down going into the expansion draft without a placeholder to fill exposure requirements. Leaving you at the mercy of other GMs or 4K's agent

Or

Having to play your third string goalie vs. Ottawa.

If both Kosko and Smith go down, I don't think any 3rd string goalie could be expected to save you. See what happened COL last summer.

The waivers means they signed him, likely as a taxi squad-injury replacement, so they don't have to call up a Marlies player to sit on taxi, right as they're trying to get AHL camps/games started
