btw, JM:

Maine's women's HEA team has been paused..... team was scheduled to play Holy Cross tonight and tomorrow.
Yeah, I saw their weekend games had been yanked from the CSL free stream schedule when I started watching Maine v. Vermont this afternoon. That pause is just one of several across college hockey early in this calendar year. :(

Watching the Connecticut women host Vermont, I was surprised to see that UConn is now allowing family & friends to attend games (with distancing & masks) inside Freitas Ice Forum. It's a hopeful sign for hockey fans.

Three Hockey East men's games on the CBS Sports College Sports Live free stream list for Sunday afternoon/evening Jan. 10th. These teams & players now have enough games under garter belts in '20-'21 to make for entertaining & competitive hockey. Still odd to see empty (or nearly empty) arenas, but those will come back someday. Patience is an increasingly valuable virtue. :puppy:

Twin brothers Ty & Dylan Jackson, freshmen from Oakville, Ontario playing for Northeastern University after sharing 2 years @ Dubuque in the USHL, connect to give the Huskies the 3-2 OT win over the Merrimack College Warriors on Saturday night. That gives NEU a 4-3-2 record & breaks a 2-game losing streak. The loss puts Merrimack at 1-4 for their short season, with six of their scheduled Hockey East matches having been postponed so far.

The Huskies will host the Warriors again on Sunday afternoon in historic Mathews Arena. Attendance will depend on how many cardboard cutouts of fans & their pets are propped up in the seats. Welcome to College Hockey - 2021 Style.

Team USA's WJC gold medalist Sam Colangelo is back with the Northeastern Huskies to begin his freshman season this weekend. He set up their 2nd goal this afternoon @ Merrimack on a quick pass from behind the Warriors' net, to give NEU a 2-0 lead after one period.

Having now watched nearly two dozen full or partial HEA games this season, I find myself as a hockey fan distracted by conditions related to the lack of butts-in-seats. One frequent thought is how the different men's & women's programs have reacted to the lack of crowd noise during games. Besides varying amounts & levels of piped in music and in some arenas recorded crowd noise, I've noticed that some player benches are a lot more vocal & noisy than others. If cheering crowds really do have a significant positive influence on the intensity (and maybe the outcome?) of play, I would think that more coaching staffs would encourage their players to cheer & bang the bench boards with sticks when significant efforts are made by teammates on the ice. I guess it's all a matter of slowly adapting to the pandemic playing conditions, and maybe established coaching philosophies. But as a fan watching remotely, I find that having teammates consistently & loudly encouraging one another makes the crowdless game more enjoyable. :highclap::5::vhappy:

Junior forward & team captain Marc McLaughlin of the Boston College Eagles scores a 3-on-4 shorthanded goal just 25 seconds into their sudden death OT period @ UNH, to give BC a 3-2 victory over the Wildcats.

The teams split their weekend pair, each side winning an overtime game. The Eagles now have a 6-2-0 record (2-1 in OT), while the Wildcats fall to 3-4-1 (also with a 2-1 OT record).

(USCHO) Monday 10: Minnesota loses first game, OT games galore, COVID cancels more college hockey
  • Another streak comes to an end

Bowling Green’s nine-game win streak was halted by visiting Bemidji State. ...
  • Another home-and-home series, and it was lit

One of the most dramatic series of the weekend was the home-and-home split between archrivals Michigan and Michigan State. After suffering an embarrassing 9-0 loss Friday in Ann Arbor, the Spartans rebounded with a 3-2, last-minute win in East Lansing Saturday. ...

St. Lawrence Has Surprise Start to Strange Season
by Joshua Seguin/Staff Writer ...

When St. Lawrence finally hit the ice last weekend, it had been nearly 10 months since last playing a game. For a coach, that is an eternity. For a player that strives to be in competition, that is unfathomable.

“Everybody has been living amongst the craziness,” second-year coach Brent Brekke said. “We had practiced all week before we were supposed to play Niagara, but because of a spike in our county we weren’t allowed to welcome teams in. It just seemed every time we got close, we would get shut down. It is great to just be playing hockey right now; we have a resilient group in our locker room because there is a sense that it is a fluid season.” ...

Considering recent years at St. Lawrence have not been good, jumping into a season against a team (Quinnipiac University) that's already played eight games could've been a recipe for disaster. But, of course, the Saints didn’t view it that way. Instead, they viewed it as an opportunity to show their growth and resolve.

There was also a sense of relief that the day had finally come.

“I think it might have been the opposite as what some people may think,” Brekke said. “It isn’t a feeling of being loose and thankful, but more it is a stronger focus. We have worked so hard, for so long to make this weekend happen and make it work. We were one week short of 10 months, which is a really long time. There is no way we could take this season lightly.” ...

Team of the Week: St. Cloud State

by Adam Wodon/Managing Editor

Brett Larson's first year as head coach was a wonderful continuation of the Bob Motzko era — 30 wins, the top seed in the NCAA Tournament (albeit with an unfortunate first-round defeat).

Last season was more humbling, 13-15-6 before the pandemic struck, shutting things down.

So this year was unknown territory, in more ways than one. Could Larson prove himself independently of the past regime, and re-tool and re-load, like St. Cloud always has? Could it be done amid these crazy circumstances, starting in something called a "pod" in Omaha?

The results so far have proven to be a resounding yes. In particular, the Huskies have just come off three consecutive wins over Minnesota-Duluth, a team that needs no introduction, so to speak. And the first of those four straight games against UMD was an overtime loss, which is practically considered a tie these days. All of that earns the Huskies the Team of the Week honors.

In all, St. Cloud State is 9-4. Included in there is a 2-2 record in the 3x3 overtime. ...
