Sanderson may not have high offensive upside, but he's not a low upside pick overall whatsoever. Players like him are worth a ton.

Look at a guy like Hampus Lindholm as a comparable. Only averages around 30P/82GP a year, but brings most of his value when the puck isn't on his stick. Same goes for guys like Slavin, McDonagh, Pesce, etc...

Compare Lindholm to a star winger like Nylander. With no difference in age or contract, would Anaheim trade Lindholm for Nylander? I highly doubt it. A stud top pairing defender is far more valuable than a stud top line scorer.

@Frank8 its absolutely not controversial to say you preferred someone else at 5.

but safe pick and high floor absolutely can be used to describe Sanderson but those aren’t bad things. Because his floor is basically guaranteed top 4 d man. That’s his FLOOR. Also high floor doesn’t mean “Unlikely to reach his ceiling”. he’s good defensively. That doesn’t mean bad offensively. His upside is no lower than any of the other forwards picked around him. While his floor is higher than all of them. Not to mention he’s probably in the nhl next year

@BondraTime good question why DID we draft Greig and jarventie.

When Sanderson starts impressing people and turning into a Miro Heiskanen type player for us, I think the mood/tone surrounding this pick will change rather quickly.

High expectations for a kid who has a lot of development to go through it would be nice if he turns into a Miro level player for us, hell a lot of us would be eating crow me included. However chances are you are setting yourself up for disappointment

Miro's NHL debut was in his 19-20 year old season. I could see Sanderson doing similar and holding his own.

I don't foresee a Conn Smythe level playoffs in his 21 year old season but they are similar builds, known for skating and transition play while being able to chip in offensively when needed. I see similar type of player in our future and maybe not exactly at Miro's level but that "type" of important player for us.

1g 1a for Balcers in 1st

He's really just staying in shape and visiting old friends playing in Norway. And, you know, maybe living somewhere where Covid-19 isn't running rampant.

But at this point the guy is too good for that league.

Rudolfs Balcers could still breakout into a top-6 forward. He's not a "spare part", a "scrub" or a "throw-in" prospect. Even if he doesn't really breakout, he could easily be a competent top-9 forward. He is only 23 y/o and has been playing in pro leagues since 2014 (except 2016-17 in the WHL) and he has had good/decent numbers all the way. His pre-season injury really sucked last year. I think he'd be considered as a NHL regular already if it didn't happen

Hopefully he has continued to get stronger

Could just be not very good.

Who? Chlapik? You think he's not playing in his home country league because "he's not very good"?

He is probably just sick or injured or have family-related problems.

i thought th question was "where is he?" like hes not producing hes absent from te scoresheet,
i see hes been absent completely could be youre right. 1 point in 3 games before that though. with out pipeline getting clocgged he needs to put up soon

Chlapik should get plenty of chances do to his size, willingly to go to the dirty areas, and ability to cycle the puck. That plus a solid skills package should allow him to carve out a bottom 6 role. Don't think there's much hope for him as a legit scoring threat but nothing wrong with that.

I can’t find much space for him on this roster

I don't have much hope for Chlapik. He's a 4th liner at the NHL level IMO. Most likely he carves out a good career in Europe.
