The D-core is going to be a shambles without Tanev.

It will be in shambles regardless, because pro scouting of defenseman under Benning has been about as bad as possible.

Tanev will be 31, Edler 34, how many more years can you ride them into the ground even if you can keep them?

Tanevs agent is going to point to Myers and say, "my client is better than him," and how can you argue?

Somebody else has to be removed from the 23-man roster, then Roussel will be activated. They are probably sorting out injuries today and deciding who among MacEwen, Goldobin or Chatfield is the best choice to be sent down.

they just called up chatfield but yea, they need to reassign someone.

Spoiler, they will unfold in frustrating and stupid fashion.
That's seemingly the most likely scenario, but there's an outside chance they somehow figure it out. Idk how especially with the morons running the show but I'm going to watch it unfold with a big buttery bag of popcorn.

As a related side note, Tanev basically has to get (atleast) Myers money as you mentioned above. How the heck are they going to afford that ?
Markstrom walks then demko and ???
Eriksson trade for slightly less expensive bad contract? Buyout?

I had forgotten that Graovac is hurt; they can put him on IR to open up a roster spot. But that would still leave them with some cap space to clear because they would be over the daily upper limit and they have very little accumulated space. Maybe they are waiting to see if Graovac's injury is such that can put him on LTIR right away. That would be the easiest way to do it.

So many moving parts in these situations.

Are they delaying Sutter returning due to the cap situation? From all accounts, it sounds like he's ready to go

I don't know how close Sutter is to returning but he counts against the cap right now anyway; it would be better to have him or Beagle back on the active roster so they can send someone else down and shed a salary. No way do they want to go down the LTIR road with salaries as small as Motte's and Graovac's so something has to give.

Ideally they would get out of LTIR as soon as possible, move Baertschi's salary and start accumulating cap space.

I can't see anyone taking on Baertschi's contract. $3.4M for this year and next for a guy in the AHL who's one hit away from ending his career.

This is what people were talking about in the offseason when they said the team was in cap hell.

Criminal that we never got to see benning operate without the confines of a salary cap. 30M bottom six would be something to behold. Instead we’re capped out and having bonuses deferred while maybe possibly squeaking into the playoffs. Not fair to jim.

I just remembered that Jay Beagle has another year on his deal after next year.

My word.

And we have to re-sign our two best players with the following players still on the books: $3MM Beagle (36) $6MM Eriksson (36) $6MM Myers (31) $3MM Roussel (32) $3.5MM Ferland (29) and $3.3MM Luongo Recap, not to mention possible extensions for 32 year old Markstrom and 32 Tanev. This also doesn't take into account another 3.7MM of bonus money for EP and Hughes if we can't fit it under next years cap.

But the cap will go up and Benning will dump Eriksson and also Tryamkin will come back and and and also juolevi and

How many contracts do you look to buy out if you take over the team after this season? Beagle is a no brainer. Ferland might be too. Eriksson can't be bought out really. Just brutal. What a mess.

And then you pray that Seattle selects Myers or Sutter (or in a miracle, Eriksson).

This IR fiasco is actually just the brilliant 12 dimensional chess move that will have Beagle on LTIR for the remainder of his contract, giving us valuable cap space to help sign Justin Schultz to a 7M deal and give Gaudette a spot as our 4th C

Not really. You'd still get hit with 2.2M in cap hit.

What an awful contract. Good lord.

I checked out a Myers buyout too, it's the same thing—you can't avoid at least a couple years of no relief, just awful.

Did they not learn anything with the Eriksson buyout proof contract?

Update: Canucks LTIR'ed him today, which they can do because come Friday he will have been out for 10 games and 24 days which is the precise pair of qualifications that must be met for LTIR, and they don't play again until Saturday. He could be reactivated for that game if he's ready to go.

I'm trying to think of creative ways we could dump the crap salary we have. Could we start bundling them for a single high cap player who will take up less roster space?

Sutter, Baertschi, Schaller/Stecher whatever.. (all for salary purposes and combine for 0 value) + any combination of prospects for Getzlaf.

Something similar for Subban, but with no prospects?

If we don't re-sign Markstrom... Schneider for Eriksson + another minor salary dump? Like? There has to be some creativity. They HAVE TO HAVE known this salary situation was going to be a mess. What's the plan?

Unfortunately I don't really see any way we can ship all the junk we have out without sacrificing picks in the process...

Yet it's the right thing to do, and they won't because they're too afraid to admit mistakes. So nothing will be done.

Eriksson +Demko for a pick. Re-sign Markstrom. All in on DiPietro after that.

Getzlaf and, to a lesser extent subban, still have value.

You may be able to get Seabrook for some combination of crap, but thats a big cap hit for a #6 dman.
Although we're now paying myers for marginally better results.

Gaudette looks like hes put it together, struggled last year and has looked really good this year. Jake has established himself as a everyday player although he has some parts of his game that need work. Pearson, Eriksson, Schaller need to go imo. They dont bring enough to the table compare to their $. We could also see any number of MacEwen, Podkolzin, Hoglander, Lind, Madden as everyday or priority call ups next year.
