People are setting themselves up for disappointment if they think it is likely we draft #1 or #2.

Better to get familiar with prospects ranked #5-#15 as that will more likely be our range.

That’s why the highest rated player I’m focused on is Cozens. He might not even be available where the Devils wind up picking, but it just seems to fit where they are now.

Cozens, Byram, Broberg, Turcotte, Zegras are all guys i would not mind ending up with. All fit what the devils are looking for and could be exactly what they need.

Thank god for Nico and for Shero making the CORRECT choice.
...as one of the first Nico advocates on this board, it's way too early to make claims like this.

1) If Nolan had similar opportunity to Nico, their production might be close. Nolan plays 4 minutes less per game and doesn't have the fortune of having Hall on his line. Nico hasn't been all the impressive this year to be honest, but I know this board watches games with rosey red glasses on.
2) If we are making early claims like yours, then the Devils didn't make the right choice because Pettersson has looked unbelievable.

Again, it's just too early to make claims like this.

So, you're expecting major improvement in the standings over the next 50 games?

Because right now, the Devils have sole possession of the 3rd worst record in the NHL, and you can only drop 3 spots, meaning #6 is literally the worst they could draft if the season ended today. To pick #13, #14, #15, etc.. they'd have to leap-frog a bunch of teams.

Yes. They are going to eventually even out and push themselves out of the top 5.

Out of top-5 is one thing, but #15 is roughly an NHL average team with maybe 95 points. I dont give this team a snowball's chance of hitting 95 points.

That would be 34-18-1 from here for a .641 winning percentage, and right now, only the top-5 teams in the NHL have a win% >= .641.

Splitting the difference somewhere around #10 is probably far more realistic.

We can keep from evening out and stay at the bottom by simply starting Cory in our away games. Play Keith at home, starting Cory equates to trolling the fans. Keith has his challenges too but seeing Cory in net feels like (and has been) an auto-loss for far too long now.

What's interesting is if he would have been there if we had not won the lottery. If there was no lottery, Vancouver would have picked 2nd picked Nico or Nolan. It's interesting to wonder if we would/could have ended up with Pettersson.

Allegedly they were a team that didn't have Nico/Nolan at #1. Although I think the thought was that somebody had Makar there, but it's possible Vancouver had Pettersson #1 on their list. I think think they had some draft day video where they tried to swap a spot with Vegas since they thought they could drop to #6 and still get Pettersson. Vegas considered it but had info that Vancouver wasn't taking Cody Glass, so they declined the deal.

Not me, but a few were saying EP, which in hindsight should have gone 1st

It's too early to be making statements like this either way. Petersson is the shiny new toy right now, but an awesome 27 games doesn't equal a career. I seriously doubt he stays a 28% shooter.

Although I wouldn't be surprised if Petersson puts up more points in his career than Nico. I do think his offensive ceiling is probably higher than Nico's, but I think Nico's defensive game will be better. I don't think you can go wrong with either player though.

nico's ceiling is an elite defensive game with strong offensive numbers, but he doesn't shoot the puck right now. petterson wants the puck and he wants to score and is really good that, something nico seems to shy away from for some reason.

i dont want to complain too much about nico though, he should be a great player for us for a long time

It's fine if you think that way.

That's your viewpoint.

However, I'll still continue making "claims" like this because I feel Nico is and will be the better choice now and in the long run.

That....and I don't appreciate being told what to do.

They play the same amount of time and Nico has more shots/game. Nico gets to play with Hall, but this idea that he's not shooting is for the birds.

that's great, but i see nico pass up prime scoring opportunities over and over again to overpass the puck when he doesn't have to. so say they shoot the same amount, ill just leave it at petterson is a better shooter/scorer period then.

I was one of those leaning towards Patrick at the draft. I'm so glad to be wrong on that one.
An HF poster that actually admits to being wrong! Refreshing as opposed to posters constantly beating their chests about how they are always "knew" everything with the benefit of hindsight.

Believe me I've been wrong plenty of times on prospects. I was high on pretty much every Swede we drafted in the first round, and outside of swindling an idiot GM with Larsson they've all been busts. I once thought David Hale was going to be the next Ken Daneyko, and that General Tao might be an NHL player. Hell, I even had hope for Scott Wedgewood. And on the opposite side I thought Coleman would just be a 4th line/depth forward. I pray that I'm just as wrong about Zacha and McLeod as I was about him.

Two DMen in the top 10. That is one of the few times I have seen that. A Dman as BPA when the Devils selected would not be the worst thing. They tend to take longer to develop which may not make some of the posters here happy.

2017 was similar with Heiskanen and Makar being the only 2 D men going in the first 13 picks

I think everyone gets a lot of them wrong. Guys like Josefson look like they should be good 3rd liners at minimum and unfortunately end up out of the league by their mid 20's.

what are the best names in the draft this year? something like Archibald Knuckles, or Beaufort Wagonwood. last year had some great ones

Last year was a generational names draft with Bode Wilde, Blade Jenkins, Angus Crookshank, and Nando Eggenberger.

There's a 2020 eligible player named Hugo Styf, which I really hope is pronounced "Stiff"
