Qatar?????!!!!
Ya. Offhand I don’t recall if any of the Copa invitees have ever been so geographically distant from the Americas, but I’m sure the fact they’re hosting the next world come influenced the invite somewhat.

If I'm not mistaken the likes of South Africa has attended a Copa America, or was it the Gold Cup? I can't recall.
But yeah obviously it's because of the WC and they're going to theoretically be thrashed. Japan is an even stupider invite in my opinion.
They should've invited one of the Concacaf Central American teams.

It’s usually Mexico and a Costa Rica/Honduras type team. Mexico has been invited as long as I can remember.

Japan has been invited before...so what's the issue?

Qatar is actually good or decent. They're in the semis of the Asia cup as we speak.

the distance gripe someone mentioned with Qatar since Japan is even further. But obviously it's because they're hosting the next WC.
also I guess Japan was picked because there's lot of Japanese Brazilians.

Oh, that's understandable but as you state Japan is further. And we live in a world where planes exited so, what does it matter if it's a 2hr flight or 12 hours?

Although, it should be central American teams or Mexico. NBD in anycase.

Someone more cynical could suggest that the perhaps more significant reason is the role of Japanese corporations as some of the biggest sponsors in South America.

lol it's not about getting there guy...it's about geographic location that's the point being brought as far as distance. AFC teams have no business attending a Copa America tournament.
Anyway, yeah we all agree with your last sentance. NBD because they should not make the group indeed.

Why? They would wimp out and send their youth teams as usual.

From Wiki....

Nine different nations have received invitations: Costa Rica (1997, 2001, 2004, 2011, 2016), Honduras (2001), Japan(1999, 2019), Jamaica (2015, 2016), Mexico(1993, 1995, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2004, 2007, 2011, 2015, 2016), Haiti (2016), Panama (2016), the United States (1993, 1995, 2007, 2016), and Qatar (2019).

The United States was invited to every tournament between 1997 and 2007 but frequently turned down the invitation due to scheduling conflicts with Major League Soccer. However, on 30 October 2006, the US Soccer Federation accepted the invitation to participate in the 2007 tournament, ending a 12-year absence. At the 2001 Copa América, Canadawas an invitee, but withdrew just before the start of the tournament due to security concerns. At the 2011 Copa América, Japanwithdrew, citing difficulties with European clubs in releasing Japanese players following the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami.

Spain was invited to the 2011 edition, but according to the Royal Spanish Football Federation, they declined because they did not want to interrupt the Spanish players' holidays.

At the 2015 Copa América, Japan declined the invitation as it would bring burdens to their overseas players, and China had to withdraw due to the Asian sector of qualification for the 2018 World Cup being held at the same time

This whole thing about inviting outside-teams to this competition is like as if a team from the outer space was invited to the World Cup.

I think Uruguay is going to win it. Suarez made sure he was fit by having knee surgery before the end of the season, this is possibly the most complete team they've had while he was on the team and they've already won one of these before.

Anyone who thinks they have a legit shot is brain dead so glad he doesn’t think they can win.

People have been hyping them up for a year but I still don’t see it.

Neymar ruptured ankle ligaments again, so this is clearly now a career long issue. He is out for the tournament.
