The future is looking pretty bright. This has to be the deepest pool in the league and we are finally starting to get some upper echelon forward talent coming through with Zegras IMO having arguably the highest upside of any forward we’ve drafted since 2003 and guys like Steel, Terry and Comtois coming through who all look like they should be low end 1st liners/high end 2nd liners and Lundestrom has intriguing upside also.

There were some massive falls, especially among our dmen as clearly we have a lot less to be excited about on the backend and we also had two incoming forwards drafted in the first round in the 2019 draft. On the backend LaCombe could be someone to watch for, same with Thrun. Benoit had a great camp and could be a late bloomer with number 4-5 potential.

halfway through the season, what's the current top 10 looking like? obviously a couple
of guys probably considered graduated. biggest riser? biggest disappointment?

Not a whole lot of changes. Tracey slides ahead of Jones and Lundestrom for me. Janicke moves way up

1. Zegras

8. Jones
9. Mahura
10. Groulx

Biggest disappointment: Guhle or Terry
People will probably flip out on terry... its not that I don't think he has potential to be a good player... but hes really been underwhelming for us... he shows a bit of skill occasionally but doesn't get much done. Hes also older than most of the other prospects, so he should be closer to makin the jump.

Granted I didn't bother with graduating players until end of year.

Tracey, Janicke and maybe Grouxl all rise. Terry probably drops although he’s no longer a prospect really. Not sure exactly what my top 10 would be but Zegras is still clearly no 1.

For our lists we use 50 games played as graduated, right? So that means no Steel, Terry, Larsson and Jones. So I would say something like

Zegras
Comtois
Lundestrom
Dostal
Mahura
Tracey
Guhle
Jones
Groulx
Janicke

That was pretty quick so I may have a few changes. I gave Mahura the edge over Tracey because I think he has looked really good in limited action this year and has definitely taken a step forward this year. I always really liked Mahura but his first pro season was tough.

With no sports and a need for distraction, I thought I'd do this to help us be pre-occupied for a minute or two.
  • FA Date = date we signed the player, either as a UDFA or prospect FA
  • T Date = we got this player in a trade, but the date is their draft year by their original team
  • For Goalies, it's: Games, GAA, and Save Pct

If there are any mistakes, then let me know so I can amend them. After compiling all of the info, my brain's kinda fried as I just see numbers at the moment. LoL Thanks in advance for finding mistakes that I can update to be correct info.

And since we know which prospects will no longer be eligible in next year's prospect ranking, then "maybe" we can do a re-ranking before the NHL entry draft. It'll be far easier to slot the new draftees afterward. I know we usually do this in September, but I needed the distraction myself. Just wanted to throw content out there for us to discuss.

For what it's worth the following have graduated since the last rankings:

Steel
Terry
Jones
Larsson

Of those who played in the NHL this season Comtois, Guhle, Mahura, De Leo and Sherwood are all still prospects as per the criteria used here. I don't think I've missed anyone else off the top of my head.

If I personally were to re rank the above (including graudations) I think there would be quite a few changes.

In my opinion it would be something like this (I only bothered going to 20):

1. Zegras
2. Dostal
3. Comtois
4./5. Steel/Terry (if they were the same age I think I would have Terrry ahead but given Steel half a year younger and a full draft year behind in his development I am going to say it's a toss up)
6. Lundestrom
7. Thrun
8. Tracey
9. Mahura
10. Larsson (he made massive strides the last 10-15 games, without him making such strides he would have dropped considerably)
11. Jones
12. LaCombe
13. Grouxl
14. Guhle
15. Benoit
16. McLaughlin
17. Sherwood
18. Janicke
19. Morand
20. Kopacka

Big risers for me are Dostal and Thrun. Only real big faller is Jones (because I don't see huge upside there - I see a high floor, low ceiling) but that whole group from 8 to 14 is really interchangable for me. I was tempted to rank Benoit higher but it's hard to know where to put him exactly. As good as he's been his trajectory and pedigree reminds me a bit of Brett Festerling with maybe a bit more offensive talent. McLaughlin I also wanted to rank higher but a lot of the guys ahead of him are more sure things so even though I still like his upside more I am skeptical he will reach his ceiling.

Hmmm... Odd that Thrun skyrockets to 7th, but LaCombe is at 12th with Mahura and Larsson in between? LaCombe and Thrun are similarly positioned in point production with their respective teams, but Thrun needs to work on his skating whereas LaCombe's skating is just fine. As much as I love Thrun's booming hits, that skating will be exposed at the NHL level. Separating both seems to lose some consistency in rating. Although, I think Guhle should drop further on that list. LoL

Finally, the Dostal Barge is getting recognition! woot!

Mine's very similar but with Dostal a bit lower, Groulx over Lacombe, and Kindopp over Kopacka.

Going to go with this as an update on my last list. Jones graduated (which I noted in my post and still listed him lol) and Thrun has been the big riser I think. LaCombe was drafted as a project and Thrun outplayed him on both sides of the puck in their freshman years so he gets the nod for now.

I want Benoit to get a shot, but I'm not sure when there will be an opening when/if we're healthy.
Sooner or later the opening will come up. But we`ll likely have to get rid of Irwin and MDZ (who will be a good pickup for another team). Would like to keep Hawk around.

Injuries will come as we know. Benoit is having a solid run since he became a pro and I`m his fan but he`s still only 21 years old. He can keep developing in the A for at least most of the next season.
