... and it's over. Texas was originally awarded a win and Toronto was required to forfeit due to a medical emergency involving their staff. AHL decided to replay the game after the fact.

Texas blows another 2-0 lead. At least this time they manage to lose in OT.

Well Texas doesn't exactly play exciting . Oettinger looks really good and JRob is really good at converting on his chances.

WHat i saw San Antonio dominated the 3rd period in possesion and Oettinger was really good . Then SA took a really late penalty and that powerplay converted right away. Not sure how JRob was left this open but hey i take it .

Honestly thats a gimmy for a great scorer. Pretty sure the Rampage coaches will be livid with that kind of penalty killing.

At this point if the Stars can't re-sign Dobby it might be better to roll with Oettinger because most available NHL backups aren't very good.

Paywall: Matt’s mail: On the Stars’ playoff positioning, prospects, third jerseys and more

More quotes and discussion of the Texas Stars from Nill that are disappointing/inconsistent. DeFranks suggests that after discussing Harley with Nill a month ago, the team would likely make a decision about where he plays next season in June or July like they did with Heiskanen. A direct quote from Nill stated that they'd be closely watching his team in the OHL if they can go on a run or they'll watch him in the AHL with Texas.

It's another comment where Nill says Texas getting into the playoffs is important for a guys development, like he did right after trading Djuse, yet the team had been in a free fall due to injuries around the deadline and really until just the last 2 games. He's talking again like Harley is going to have an opportunity to make an impact in Texas, yet he's literally done nothing to help that team recover from the injuries and get the extra help they need. Other teams added help in the AHL at the NHL trade deadline or AHL transfer deadline. Dallas did nothing.

It seems so inconsistent and just illogical to pump the tires of guys like Harley or Barteaux joining Texas when the team isn't in a playoff spot now, and they weren't when he first made the comments. It's still possible Texas overcomes a great deal to claw into the playoffs, but you'd think a guy who consistently preaches the importance of the AHL playoffs to a guys development to do nothing when his developmental team is looking at missing the playoffs for the 2nd consecutive year.

In some cases, you're not even talking picks to add AHL players. St. Louis traded nothing to add Ho-Sang for San Antonio, a team ahead of Texas that has also manhandled them the majority of the season. The last opportunity to get help for Texas is ATO's for NCAA players, and thankfully this is the weekend where some seasons are ending for those teams. That said, there are only a handful of impact players available. There's no guarantee you get one of those guys, and most of the high impact players are on top teams that are still several weeks away from the end of their season.

It would be great for Texas if Oettinger's recent play can carry them through to the playoffs because that seems like their best hope right now.

It's essentially impossible for Texas to catch Milwaukee or Iowa so both teams helped them today by winning games against Manitoba and San Antonio in regulation today. Less helpful result was Rockford beating Chicago in OT (3 point game).

    Texas has 16 games remaining (3 X San Antonio, 3 X Manitoba, 2 X Chicago, 2 X Rockford, Grand Rapids, 5 X Outside Division)

Cal Burke (Notre Dame) is a guy that has been talked about as a potential free agent signing last year. His team was just eliminated by Minnesota. I haven't seen him mentioned much this season as a senior probably because his production did dip a bit. Might be a guy who could sign soon.

This guy covers the league Dartmouth plays in, and according to him, O'Connor is looking to sign with a team. He only listed Pittsburgh as one of the teams interested.

I'm always leery of these college FAs. So much over-hype.

O'Connor is interesting though because of his sudden transformation into a giant lol.

I've gotten to the point I only see them as help for the AHL team, and anything they may or may not do in the NHL is just a bonus.

O'Connor's size is interesting though. It reminded me of Brenden Dillon. Am I remembering that correctly? Isn't he the undrafted guy Dallas signed that was under 6' in his draft year, and by the time they signed him out of the WHL (?/Somewhere in the CHL, IIRC) he was 6'3"?

I couldn't help but look it up. Dillon was 5'2" at 15 and went undrafted in the WHL. He was 5'11" by the time he was 17 and Seattle ultimately gave him a chance. When Dallas signed him as a 20 year old, he was 6'2", and I see today he's listed as 6'3".

Yeah for the most part these college free agents aren’t worth the hype unless it’s a Kevin Hayes type who chose not to sign with his team. These guys had three chances to get drafted and passed through each year. I understand that some people are late bloomers, but historically these guys don’t make an impact on NHL rosters.

Again just to be clear ... they often have an impact in the AHL which what we're talking about.

I've seen a couple ATO's already happen today, and several have reported O'Connor is signing with Pittsburgh. Sounds like Khodorenko is going to NY. Hartford was actually one of the teams that already signed someone to an ATO so they may have 2 new additions today if Khodorenko does sign with the Rangers.

Scott White has deep ties in Michigan, and it's extremely common this time of year for them to add ATOs from that state.
