Who is are muscle to protect the kids, can any of the prospects hold their own?
Harpur would be the new heavyweight since I think Boro is on the way out & Tkachuk can hold his own & should get bigger & tougher with age. If they build a tougher & bigger team by drafting some bigger & tougher skilled players they could also do it as a team which would be much better & benefit everyone especially at playoff time. Batherson can handle himself, Formenton should be able to handle himself, Paul & Brown are big guys & shouldn't get pushed around & there are a few good big players in this yr's draft who are also skilled that could be drafted by Ottawa in Seider RD & Leason RW. They have the opportunity to build a big, tough skilled team with this rebuild & hopefully balance it out with some very skilled or elite players.

I still have hope, and will give him this one more season to sort himself out ...He needs to worry about playing that smart but very heavy game in the defensive zone, and not so much about the offensive game...Kid has the tools

Then why did he publicly say that he left on really terms, has a lot of friends in the organization still and would definitely come back? Actually, why paraphrase when a direct quote will do.

“It’s still early in this process but I have a good relationship with the people in Ottawa that are still there,” Spezza told LeBrun. “It would be high on my list of considerations that’s for sure. I left there on good terms. It definitely keeps the door open. It’s food for thought, for sure. But it’s so early in the process, we’ll see.’’

Vancouver
Tkachuk White Simmonds/Eberle
Duclair Tierney Ryan
Balcers Spezza Batherson
Smith Pageau Verroneau

Chabot DeMelo
Wolanin Miller
Borowiecki Jaros

EDIT: I like the idea of Connolly too, but could see his production absolutely tank as well after the spike this past season.

Spezza coming back would be fantastic. Give him the c again, let him play out his last few years where he belongs and pass the torch to a tkachuk or someone when ready.

I totally agree. From everything I’ve heard, his knowledge of the game would be like having another coach out there. He would be an unbelievable mentor to our young forwards and he still has a bit of game left.

I mean let’s be honest, we’re hoping for a lottery pick this year. A guy like spez will he great for player development and to shelter some of our young centres without helping out in the win column too much.

spezza seems realistic, simmonds/eberle are probably too rich for us, even after swapping ceci for miller

Exactly. I want what he brings in the locker room more than on the ice.

Hes a former high pick, a legit star at one point and a great mentor for the upcoming crop of youngsters in Ottawa.

Plus he can still chip in on the power play and show the kids how it's done.

I'm curious to see where the market ends up on Eberle. He didn't have a great regular season, but was better in the playoffs. What would concern me is that he just at the age when scoring forwards start to regress every year. He's going to want as much term as possible, and I just don't think we are going to want to give him, say, 4 years, $22 million...

Seems like there might be something to the Spezza rumours. Mutual interest has likely been communicated through back channels. I guess that would bump Logan Brown off the team.

Tkachuk [.925] - White [4.25] - Gibbons [1.0]
Duclair [1.25] - Spezza [2.5] - Batherson [.736666]
Balcers [.759167] - Pageau [3.1] - Ryan [7.25]
Smith [3.25] - Tierney [2.9375] - Davidsson [.768333]
Boedker [4.0]

Chabot [.863333] - DeMelo [.9]
Brannstrom [.863333] - Ceci [5.25]
Borowiecki [1.2] - Jaros [.755]
Wolanin [.9]
Harpur [.725]

Anderson [4.75]
Hogberg [.9]

LTIR: MacArthur [4.65] and Gaborik [4.875]
Retention: Phaneuf [1.75]
Buyout: Condon [.4]

Total: 61.5M

I think there's a chance that they don't qualify Duclair. In that case, bump Balcers up a spot and plug Formenton in on the 3rd line.

Comfortably above the cap floor and only spending ~50M in salary. Solid.

Really can't understand why they wouldn't qualify Duclair... Doesn't make a lot of sense to me; he either becomes the player people have hoped he would, or he doesn't and we don't care because this season is a write off. I mean, I've seen no evidence that he's toxic in the room, he seems well liked, and we've got a new Head coach that's supposed to be good with young guys and motivating them.

Also surprised to see Davidsson on your roster. I know there was talk he was on the verge of making Clb last season, but I would imagine they'd want him in the AHL before stepping right in, though we don't have a ton of other options unless we play a guy like Boedker.

Pass on Spezza,he is likely even slower when he left....We dont need a veteran PP specialist ,that ice time needs to go to the kids

What about a player coach to teach the kids? Spezza has a ton of experience to pass on, i have no illusion or even desire that he will significantly improve the team but i do think he can aide the development of our players.

I don't hate the idea of Spezza coming back. Two possible advantages: 1. keeps kids in the AHL if we want to go the tank route again this year. 2. Would serve as a good offensive mentor to White, Batherson, Brown, etc. if they are with the big club. He was a very gifted offensive player - would be great to see some of that passes along if he's inexpensive.

Kelly was done as a player but come playoffs he was passing on his experience to turris at the dot to help us beat begeron

Agreed...Duclair was great. If he doesn't work out he would be easy enough to get rid of.

Step 1: acquire a talented young winger who has motivation issues.

Step 2: give him some ice time and confidence to get back to where he was earlier in his career and see how he responds (he did great for the record).

Step 3: hire a coach who's primary attribute is motivating young players and helping them grow.

Step 4: release said player before the coach even gets to meet him.

Sounds like something the Senators would do, unfortunately..... and I'll be super livid if they do it.

Dont bring Spezza back. He has never won a cup. That should be his goal. Not playing out a contract on a rebuilding team.

Never liked that about certain players. Like ones that refuse to waive their no trade clause to go to a team on a cup run because they dont want to leave their family behind for a couple months. At that moment hockey is about collecting a paycheque to you and not about winning. Keep those players away from the kids.

Randy Cunneyworth has two solid years playing with up and comers. He led that generation of Sens. Spezza can do the same, and no reason why he cannot bounce back. By all accounts, and what I watched in the playoffs, he skates as well as he ever has.

And what if no cup contenders are offering him a contract?
