Only the top 10 are presented because sample size is an issue with the variety of players and considerable differences to the positional rankings. Examples:
  • Connor McDavid barely edged out Nathan MacKinnon in the Forwards voting, but is a clear step ahead here. A larger portion of those who had him as the #1 forward also thought of him as the Best Player in the league than the portion of MacKinnon supporters thought of their favourite forward.
  • Artemi Panarin is a bit closer to Nikita Kucherov than in the Forwards voting. A larger portion of his backers rated him close to the top among all players in the league than the portion of Kucherov backers with their guy.
  • Jack Eichel (10th, leapfrogs four forwards) and Sidney Crosby (14th, leapfrogs three forwards) benefit from the same effect. Droppers: Point (13th) and in particular Matthews (15th), Kane (16th) and Marchand (18th). Voters who had Eichel and Crosby high on their Forwards ballot were more likely to also rate them very high among overall players in the league.
  • Seth Jones is the defencemen benefitting the most. He's 11th among Best Players, leapfrogging Pietrangelo, Carlson and Heiskanen. Carlson is 12th. The losers relative to the Defencemen voting are Pietrangelo (20th) and Miro Heiskanen (one ballot only).
  • Another difference: Hellebucky's advantage over Vasilevskiy (17th) and Rask (19th) is bigger here than in the Goaltenders voting.

I wonder if it would be a good idea to force top 10 overall players ballots to match the positional rankings established on the voters' positional ballots.

That's what I do. I PMd quite a few voters back to tell them they had player A above player B in the Forwards category but B over A in the Best Players category. It was fixed on every single ballot.

Then you aren't getting the best player.

what do you mean?

All I was saying was if you think Connor McDavid is a better forward than Nathan MacKinnon then you should also think he is a better player than Nathan MacKinnon. Those rankings should be congruent across those two separate ballots.

I was just confused because he was talking about how players leapfrogged other players in the best player voting, and I wasn't sure how that could happen if people's ballots made sense.

I'm just saying if you have Bobby Hull at LW instead of moving Mario over then what's the utility of the thing?

Here's how it can happen:

18 voters have Jack Eichel among the best forwards. 12 of them also have him among the best players.
25 voters have Auston Matthews among the best forwards. But only 8 of them also have him among the top players.

I think you misunderstood @seventieslord. He thought that I allowed one and the same voter to rank e.g. Auston Matthews over Jack Eichel in the Forwards category but Jack Eichel over Auston Matthews in the Best Players category. Which wasn't actually the case, I did ask voters to be congruent.

My methodology was, rank each position.

For my top 10, I based it off the positional ranking which I did first.

So start off comparing #1 at each position. Whoever was chosen at 1, next player at that position falls into the compare.

And so forth.

F#1 - A
F#2 - B
F#3 - C

D#1 - D
D#2 - E
D#3 - F

G#1 - G
G#2 = H
G#3 = I

So for overall #1

Compare F#1, D#1, G#1

If Overall#1 = F#1

For Overall #2 compare F#2, D#1, G#1
