Im all about the formula these days. Figure out how much money you want to spend in each roster spot to get a balanced team. Then find the players to put there over a few years. Trade everybody who doesnt fit in that structure.

I'm hoping for this lineup at some point in the future, maybe 2 or 3 yrs. Four rookie centres .... it's CRAZY! And the 2018 1st rd pick.

Duchene - Brown - Stone
Hoffman - Chlapik - Batherson
Dzingel - White - Svechnikov/Sadina/Walhstrom
Formenton - Paul - Gagné/Luchuk

Chabot - Karlsson
Lajoie - Ceci
Harpur - Jaros/Wolanin

Ward - Hogberg/Gustavsson

I see it a little bit differently:

Hoffman - Duchene - Stone
Dzingel - Brown - Batherson
Formenton - White - Svechnikov/Zadina (hoping for a lottery pick)
Perron - Chlapik/Luchuk - Gagné

Chabot - Karlsson
Wolanin - Ceci
Lajoie/Harpur/Jaros

Hogberg/Gustavsson

If we could somehow keep Duchene and Stone, this is what I think could happen. Money wouldn't be a problem going forward, even if you give them both 8 M$ AAVs. Of course, this is an hypothetical scenario so if they are both retained, we should focus on trading Dzingel, Ceci, Ryan, Smith and Condon. Not because I don't like them or they can't be useful but considering many factors, like their salaries and/or upcoming prospects, that money could be invested differently (like for upcoming contracts, etc)

I gave White and Wolanin 1.5 AAV each. It will probably be different numbers but between both, I think 3.0 should be close. Gave 0.9 AAV to Paul.

I graduated the Bingo line. I expect them to dominate in the AHL this season and get a some games in Ottawa during the year, depending on injuries. Let them get more pro experience and continue develop chemistry. A rookie skilled 3rd line would be awesome.

Like most on this board wish, Ceci won't be back in my scenario but still gotta find a replacement. Same with Ryan, will have to retain and/or take some salary back, maybe a stop gap veteran D-man while JBD develops? Who fits that bill?

2019-20

Boedker ($4,000,000) - Duchene ($8,000,000) - White ($1,500,000)
Tkachuk ($925,000) - Tierney ($2,937,500) - Stone ($8,000,000)
Balcers ($759,167) - Chlapik ($728,333) - Batherson ($736,666)
Formenton ($753,333) - Pageau ($3,100,000) - ???????? ($???,???)
Paul ($900,000)

Chabot ($863,333) - DeMelo ($900,000)
Lajoie ($710,000) - ???????? ($???,???)
Wolanin ($1,500,000) - Jaros ($755,000)
Borowiecki ($1,200,000)

Anderson ($4,750,000)
???????? ($???,???)

Total Cap Hit : $44,768,332 (with only needing a goalie, a D-man and a 4th liner)

==========================================

Traded at the 2019 deadline (if possible in some cases) :

Dzingel
Wideman
Pääjärvi
Pyatt
McCormick

Traded before next season (2019 trade deadline, 2019 draft or during the off-season)

Ceci (RFA)
Harpur ($725,000)

Traded but will need to be creative and get some salary back. Could possibly get a future LTIR contract ala Gaborik in Ryan's case.

Smith ($3,250,000)
Ryan ($7,250,000)
Condon ($2,400,000)

* Boedker has a 3 M$ salary, I see the team holding on to him until the 2020 trade deadline.
* I can't see Borowiecki gone in the near future, like it or not, he is a "glue guy" on this team. If he is played as a depth D-man with sheltered minutes I have not much problem with that.

Long Term IR (LTIR, 80% insured)

MacArthur ($4,65 off0)
Gáborík ($4,875,000)

==========================================

Non-Roster

Brown ($863,333) : he's a long-term project, and has lost a lot of development time with constant injuries, we have to take our time with him
Kelly ($736,666)
Sturtz ($767,500)
Luchuk ($759,166)
Sieloff ($700,000)
Gustavsson ($761,666)

RFAs in the 2019 off-season, not sure they'll all be kept, could be used in trades :

Englund
Gagné
Tambellini
Rodewald
Bergman
Högberg

So my question, as I did what most would like (get rid of Ryan, Ceci, Smith and even Condon), how do we reach the cap floor next year?

You forgot the more than 11M for Gaborik, MacArthur and Phaneuf. Now add back Ryan and Condon and you are done.

I think a lot of people don’t realize that Tierney is actually younger than Pageau. I honestly had no idea he was under 25 until today. He just turned 24 in July. Based on what we have seen so far, he is more valuable than Pageau.

Weird, I did it on capfriendly and it usually includes those amounts, I thought they were. Will edit

If we need to take the next step then we badly need an upgrade on 2C position. I know Tierny is racking up points and is looking pretty solid, so far, but he still fails the eye test to be a long term 2nd line center.

A trade has to go down for a young 2nd line center who can actually be a part of our young core group going forward.

While we at it, we are in a desperate need of a top 4 D-man too, who form a solid 2nd pairing with Lajoie
