You're confusing "talent" with production.

People act like the Flyers are the only team to demote a talented young player, or play a veteran over them, never happens elsewhere in the NHL. Nope.

I mean what team would play a washed up vet like Boumeester 20:44 a night while limiting a promising young D-man like Dunn to 17:32, or play a veteran has been like Steen over a rising star like Thomas.

And we know a brilliant coach like Trotz would never give big minutes to talent challenged veterans like Boychuk (18:50), Filppula (14:16) or Komarov (13:53) while burying a top draft pick like Ho Sang (28th pick in 2014). Or play a stiff like Mike Martin over 5th rd pick Dal Colle.

Luke Schenn is a better hockey player than Robert Hagg. Yes, even now.

Manning's effectively done as an NHLer and if not for Dave Hakstol wouldn't have lasted nearly as long in the league as he did. He's also, incredible though it may seem, a better hockey player than Robert Hagg.

Sure, Vande Velde played 3 seasons, the last 2 under Dave Hakstol who absurdly waited until the final game of the season (& of his NHL career) to healthy scratch him. He then promptly became a mediocre player in Europe.

All of which is a far cry from your original assertion that Hagg is going to have a long NHL career. I have no doubt he'll play somewhere this season. I think we might even be able to get a 2nd for him, because dinosaurs still roam the GM suites around the league. But Hagg sucks and the league is going to catch onto that fact sooner rather than later and once they do he's done. I know you know that he sucks. You've admitted in the past that he sucks. You just can't bring yourself to admit how much he sucks because that would mean that Hakstol's usage of him was idiotic, insane, and wrong, and you can't have that now, can you?

Hagg sucks. But so did Luke Schenn most of his career. Especially here.
VDV is and has never been a NHL player. He was just pretending to be one when Hak and Hextall was here

VdV benched a bunch of future stars like Leier, Luby, Cousins, Umberger, Gordon, White, Rinaldo, Akeson.
His spot was basically filled by Lehtera and Weise.

Maybe the problem wasn't VdV, but simply a lack of any sort of quality depth?

There's a lot of noise in GAR. Athletes in general and especially hockey players are far more consistent than what's shown in the extreme year to year fluctuations in GAR.

So that makes VdV good? He was garbage. Just like the players you listed.
That was another fault of Hextall. Keeping trash around like that.

There was no excuse for the Flyers, with the cap space they had to not be able to find a more quality bottom 6 player.

I don’t for a second believe he was trying to tank. VDV was just another example of failed player evaluation.

I enjoyed when Fletcher came in and started the debridement of the trash left on the club.

They didn't even need to find anyone... they already had superior players in the organization.

Same with all the trash they've played the last few years. Acting like guys like Hagg, Lehtera, VDV, etc beat out the youth or were our only option is just a blatant lie to defend the coach. Sanheim was always the better player than Hagg, yet Hagg played and Sanheim sat. Half our AHL team would've been a better option than VDV, but he played instead. Pretty much every player in the NHL or AHL was better than Lehtera, but again, he played instead.

Fact is, we had better but Hakstol played trash because he loves trash.

I went along with the idea that Hextall loved to “over cook” his young players. It kind of became clear at times that there was definitely a quota of young kids that were going to be allowed to filter into the big club. No matter if they were more skilled or close to ready.

Cap space. They didn't have cap space until last season. Where were you the last five years? Remember when they dumped Hartnell?

Sure.
2014-15 Phantom forwards:
Cousins, Akeson, Gordon, Leier, Laughton, Stortini, Straka, Jones, Goumas, Hextall, Powe, Rosehill, Fyten, Alderson, Mathers
2015-16 Phantom forwards:
Conner, Leier, Cousins, Martel, Straka, McDonald, Bardeau, Palushaj, Brent, Goul, Goumas, Padakin.

Yep, lot's of future NHL players in that group.
Laughton came up and played ahead of VdV, Cousins couldn't even stick with Zona.
The rest have had a cup of coffee at beset.
[Powe was at the end of his career]

Who said future NHL players? The standard is "Better than VDV." Who wasn't an NHL quality player; who isn't even an AHL quality player. Many were indeed better than VDV.

They had a lot of cap space. Enough to replace VDV with a better player. Hell even more so if it wasn’t wasted on the marvels of Dale Weise and others for example.

I shall step aside. No point arguing over trash.

VDV was so bad he couldn't even get an AHL job.

He had to go to Austria to find someone who wanted him.

VdV was 30, Powe was out of the NHL at age 28 and out of the AHL by 30.
Mediocre players have shorter careers, surprise!

That list of AHL players was absolute trash outside of Cousins (replacement player) and Laughton.
Akeson, Goul, Rosehill, Martel and McDonald were the only ones who even got on a NHL roster for a game.
Anyone who says those AHL players were better than VdV knows squat about ice hockey.

And no, we didn't have cap room.
His first season we had traded Hartnell, but were still stuck with Vinnie.
We didn't sign Weise until his 3rd season, and added Filppula and Weise was supposed to push guys like VdV down the ladder.

I brought up Schenn a while back. He found success after departing from the Flyer organization. That is a clear statement.
