I 100% agree... though I really think they will push to sign him in March.
I really don’t think he’ll be ready. In fact I don’t think he’s going to light up the NCAA like most predict.

He’s so skilled but so raw aside from his feet which IMO would already be high end in the NHL. I think two years minimum. Perhaps even with some AHL time when he first signs his ELC.

P.S. Hench what’s your opinion on coach Jerry York? A big thing with Alex is his lack of structure. He’s always been a tier above everyone he’s played with therefore coaches pushed for him to always chase the puck. I notice in best on best international tournaments that Alex is constantly running around the ice chasing the puck as he has in lower levels. Do you think York is a structured coach that will teach him more about playing his position? He’s going to play against comparable quality peers for the rest of his hockey career which will be new. He’s going to need to use his position and his teammates better. If this transition happens easily it will likely lead to him taking that next step earlier.

York is one of the greatest college hockey coaches of all time, but he's not as structured as you're probably wanting. It is there and he has systems, but his philosophy is develop the best players and chemistry, develop the best team. He isn't structured in a way you'd see at higher levels in professional hockey or like a guy who has NHL ambitions. Players who need structure are going to struggle until they can find their own way within. A clear example is Wahlstrom... he came from the USA system which has a lot of structure to it for a junior team. He's not an improvisational player, and relies on being directed to spots or spots cleared for him. He struggled pretty hard last year to the point where he nearly left mid season. The improvisational types thrive... Johnny hockey is a great example there. Those that have their own structure also do well, White is a great example there. If Newhook needs that brought into his game, he's probably going to have a bit of a disappointing year. Doesn't mean he will bust or anything, but people may see only 20-25 points and think it was a failure.

Wouldn’t the avs be considered one of the less structured teams in the league ?

During the Roy/Sacco era’s, sure.

Bednar is very structured.

Actually, it depends. Roy very explicitly stated he didn't want to stifle creativity in the offensive zone so he was largely hands-off, but his defensive zone scheme was very structured. It kinda had to be given the complexities inherent in a man-to-man coverage system. He was also quite adamant about the team controlling it through the neutral zone, almost to a fault. Roy also felt the need (not soon enough IMO) to get them to play more structured hockey in the neutral zone.

Bednar obviously has a pretty structured system in all three zones but you can tell he kinda just lets the top line do whatever they want. He's also okay with the team dumping it into the zone if the opposition isn't giving them any space to skate it in.

If Newhook posts the same type of numbers that Jost did - which could happen since HE lost some talent on other teams not named BC or BU - Avs are going to sign him. And I am going to be disappointed in that decision, he needs at least two years in the NCAA for me.

One thing I’ll say is that Newhook’s goal wasn’t to simply play in the NHL as soon as possible. He wants to prepare himself for a long career and wants to accomplish that by developing properly.

Going the NCAA route was 100% Newhooks choice. He had the option to play for one of the best CHL teams in the country who just so happened to be hosting the MEM Cup but still choose to stay in Victoria. If he wanted to play in the NHL this year or next it would have made more sense to go to Halifax. Remember he was considered the #2 to Hughes a few years ago when that decision first game up. Most #2 picks never see college since they’re NHL ready. It’s always been Alex’s plan to go to college, get educated and develop into a an all round NHL player.

If Newhook doesn’t feel he’s ready for the NHL at the end of this season I highly doubt he’d sign. Sakic isn’t the type to force it either or else we would have had a full season of Makar last year.

He’ll know/get to stay out of the AHL too.
