Good to see rating #'s up especially in the face of cord cutting and the fact people aren't always home on Saturday nights.

Ignoring how ridiculous it is once you've been a fan of this sport/league longer than a year and a half to continuously point out how low NHL ratings are comared to the other 3 major team sports, it would actually be like a mayor bragging about going from 500,000 murders to 375,000.

OT: Considering MLS awful broadcast TV ratings, this is a big success.

It's a chicken or egg comparison IMHO. I always have said MLS needs more OTA games to generate a larger National TV following. Look at EPL ratings before NBC, EPL ratings were actually a little less than MLS ratings at the time before EPL went to NBC and got 30+ OTA games a yr. MLS just started getting regular season OTA games on FOX back in 2016 and have had only 4-6 games each yr, only 4 last yr. It's not really fair to rag on ratings with that type or lack of OTA coverage. Could you imagine what NHL's regular season Ratings would look like after years without having any regular season OTA games, or just 4 NBC games a year? The overall NBC Broadcast family TV average would plummet from the current 420k range where it is now.

This is huge for MLS as the regular season average has been just shy of 280k. The average will jump the next few seasons. Can't overstate the level of how big this is for MLS as it's a few seasons out from their new TV Deal. It shows that its TV partners are committed and invested moving forward. It's a seminal moment for that league.

Even in Canada, NFL is TV ratings king.

The MLS has 11 OTA games on FOX/ABC, NHL has 12 on NBC, and the NBA has around 20 on ABC. The MLS figure also includes their playoffs whereas the NHL and NBA's are just regular season.

No there will be 14 MLS regular season OTA games this year up from 4 last year, 10 on ABC and 4 on FOX. Will include 8pm primetime game on FOX as well. The 14 OTA doesn't include the playoffs or the Cup Final.

Mentioned this in another thread but, this would be a great chance to get more OTA broadcast games. CBS is the top legacy Broadcast network in the US.
I wonder with CBS bailing out of the SEC deal once it hit $250-300m yr (current 55mil yr) if that opens up a window for NHL. CBS may look to grab a major sports right after it'll most likely lose out to Disney ABC/ESPN.

I think everyone saw how losing most or all of your major sports rights affected NBC in the late 90's early 2000's so I think you are right. They could potentially grab a piece of the NHL's rights/expand their golf presence as well.

CBS will be in a bind too as most of the power 5 major Conferences TV rights are locked up. There will be few if any tier 1 rights available that time of the season in the fall. They could fill that in with track and field type stuff like NBC does or they could offer a package of 10-15 NHL games on CBS.

Dont forget that the SEC contract also included a certain amount of basketball games on OTA CBS. Besides showing more Big 10/Mountain West games Im intrigued as to what CBS will do, as those UK games were pretty much a guaranteed 2-4 million viewers during the dead time between the end of the NFL and beginning of the NBA/NHL playoffs. It also creates more of a disconnect between CBS and college basketball

We're witnessing one of those major cultural shifts in the sporting landscape as CBS loses the SEC rights to ABC/ESPN. It's eerily akin to when NBC lost the NBA to ABC/ESPN and that iconic Intro Music. NBC losing the NBA had a huge sports media ripple effect that's still felt to this day.

NBC lost its prized property to ABC/ESPN which led to a shift in how ESPN covered sports. ESPN shifted from more of a round robin of varying degrees of sports coverage to a mainly 24/7 coverage of NBA/NFL. NBC after first losing MLB and then it's gem in the NBA started to recover and won NHL rights along with EPL. It will be interesting to see what CBS does, as they had to see this coming. Do they have a backup plan.

I'd love to be a fly on the wall at CBS executive HQ. This plays well for the NHL as CBS will lose these rights and will have a broadcast hole just as NHL rights are coming up. At the very least NHL can use this as leverage in having "talks"
with CBS about carrying a package of games. That should drive TV media rights fees if Bettman plays it smart. You could have ABC/NBC/CBS all vying for NHL media rights.
