Vgk getting good #s for preseason games on OTA station.

Away games higher, as obviously fans are home to watch the game.

Lol, if that was to continue for the entire regular season, it would rank in the top three in the NHL for TV ratings. Crazy

First year with preseason games all 'cast by VGK crew. And first non-NBC national games on OTA channels (in LV; also 'cast in SLC, and Boise, but I don't think OTA).

It's the LV ABC network station. They are preempting prime time (until like 1am+) shows.

Canes/Preds game tonight is on Fox Sports Carolinas. I am watching it. Count me down as at least 1 person who is watching this game.

Not FOX but FS1. FS1 has had major issues with ratings for sports across board. It would only be beneficial for NHL to move to FOX if they offer alot of OTA games. I actually suspect ratings would be lower than NBCSN on FS1 as NBCSN has overtaken FS1 in viewership recently. I can't quite totally put my finger on it, but FS1 has struggled as a cable channel as there is not really much daily bumper coverage to attract viewers thru the day. MLB has had similar issues among other programming. The only thing that gets decent ratings relative to everything else on FS1 is College Football/basketball and NASCAR races. If NHL does go to FS1 lets hope for a ton of OTA games on main FOX 15-20 per season because ratings will most likely take a hit, but who cares if they pay a lot for rights.

Btw Not sure of the long term implications but DISH Network (12M Subscribers) has been in a dispute with FOX portfolio, FOX/FS1/FS2/B1GTenNetwork and has pulled those channels from DISH compounding issues.

FS1’s big issue is they don’t have any programming that is unique to them. Every rights category they have ESPN also has. If you are a college sports fan looking to catch a game you tune to ESPN first. Regular season baseball they have no exclusive window (like espn does with Sunday Night Baseball) and games can be caught on 1,000 different places. Even their day time studio programs are just knock off versions of what airs on ESPN. FS1 has basically cultivated a brand as being a knockoff channel.

So unless they fall into a game matchup that can generate strong interest on its own (like playoff baseball) they are going to struggle. However, most of those big matchups they have the rights to end up going to OTA Fox. Playoff baseball and early season NASCAR is the exception.

Contrast that with NBC’s approach to NBCSN which has focused on exclusivity. Hockey fans looking for a game, you probably flip on NBCSN first. Same for soccer fans on Saturday mornings and to a lesser extent auto racing fans. It less about the individual matchups and more the broader properties. Of course the flip side of that is NBCSN has been able to secure fewer rights deals.

Now re: MLS specifically it doesn’t help at all that they put their telecast at the same time as the late window for NFL games. You are just asking for low ratings then. I said at the time when MLS signed that deal that they took money in the short term why killing their long term growth. But the deal for both ESPN and Fox (to a lesser extent because they needed programming to supplement their FIFA rights) was to keep it away from NBC and allowing it to grow into to the go-to soccer channel. MLS is just filler programming for those channels.

It seems that ratings have been falling across the board for a number of years, yet people are expecting a massive new TV deal in the US multiple times larger than the previous. The networks better be careful on how much they pay for the rights. Look at Rogers in Canada.

NHL having less viewers than not one but two wrestling shows is not a good look. What is it 1998?

Ratings for the regular season are certainly flat. I believe it was up 2% for NBC and NBCSN at 424,000 viewers a game last year. If had gone down prior to that. However the Stanley Cup playoffs were at a 23 high averaging 1.53 million a game. The Finals were 5.33 million average viewers and almost 9 million for game 7. The year before was very strong too. The reason I believe the next TV deal will triple is the interest from several networks and streaming services. Also, running the numbers: 424,000 x 109 games for the regular season = 46,216,000 total viewers. Playoffs 1.53 million x 86 games = 131,580,000 with not many traditional markets.

Total number of viewers is 177,800,000. Even though the regular season is flat the real value of the NHL is the playoffs. That is 75% of what they are paying for. Because the playoffs are doing well and all games are televised that has tremendous value to someone. Imagine FS1 getting over a million for an NHL playoff game versus 90k for an MLS game. NBC also averaged over 3 million for OTA playoff telecasts. I could be wrong on at least tripling for tv rights but we shall see how it shakes out. Streaming rights may triple too.

You are incorrect on the FS1 statement here. Fox Sports is seeing massive gains in college football this season

Incorrect? Huh? Did you thoroughly read what I wrote? Because I echoed that, I said the only things FS1 gets good ratings on is College Football/Basketball and NASCAR races.

Saying “not a good look” unironically is not a good look.

And, outside of the playoffs, the NHL has never had more viewers than WWF/E.
