I pretty much dislike every goalie mask DaveArt has done. Just too much going on.

He seems to be getting better about creating a general "look" rather than just cramming in as many images as possible. Shesterkin's above is a good example of where there's a bunch of crap going on, but from a distance all you see is the pattern.

I'm OK with that because realistically if someone is going to DaveArt they are looking for the bells and whistles to be there somewhere, but at least there's a way to manage it within a larger design concept.

DaveArt was great at emulating the Tod McFarlane style of art. The problem is that post early 2000s that style of art looks dated. DaveArt is also not great at design. As you say, he overclutters things. He treats goalie masks like a comic book page, where he just throws down random panels everywhere. He needs to focus on overall design and incorporate his drawings into the utility of the mask.

Who did Hillers masks? His were always amazing. Minimal, impactful, and damn good looking.

DaveArt has gotten somewhat better. He’s an incredible artist no doubt, but imo still over does it with his shading and lens flares and gimmicks. Reminds me of the old Eye Candy plugin for photoshop back in the day.

I grew up when the goalie's mask was his face. Then the blank white masks followed. Given that, I think I like every contemporary goalie mask with its colors and pictures. One of the great individualistic aspects of hockey. Being able to wear something outside the basic uniform. Any other sport allow that?

Basketball allows players to represent themselves with their shoes.

Yep, pretty much all of them.

Each goalie mask is unique and multicolored. The only unique uniform item in other sports are shoes which are produced by three or four companies. A Nike swoosh - red on one shoe, blue on another. That's not like the individualism of goalie nmasks.

I'll give a tip of the hat to NASCAR but all Monster logos are the same, all Coke logos the same.

On average, how much do you think goalies pay Dave Art for one of his “masterpieces?”

Seems like Bauer finally found a way to make the colors pop a bit more on their goalie equipment. The colors were looking washed out since their shift to printed graphics. They improved the quality last year, but the graphics themselves I found average at best. They still aren't there yet... I'd be interested to hear from pro goalies, if the pads with less stitching has a significant impact on their play.

I didn’t care much for Dubnyk’s personal design last season. Too busy IMO.
