Can the Bisons take a game in Edmonton?? An Alberta loss may open the door for the Uof S to snatch first place? Gotta think the Bears will be ready for an onslaught, but with the goaltending situation,"shaky", anything can happen.
An Alberta sweep and once again, they won't play a single road game in CanadaWest playoffs.

The Bisons best games are against the best teams:

Alberta 1-1-0
Calgary 2-2-0
MRU 2-2-0
Sask 0-3-1

The Bisons are much better at home than on the road with Alberta. Overall they are 8-8-2 against them the last 5 years. If the Bisons get 25 shots in a game, they'll win it. (That is not easy.)

After a sterling effort at home last weekend, the Bisons had a rough night in Edmontown. The Evil Monkeys do an occasional face-plant but then rally in style. Could they be a night away from a face-plant?

Quick Summary
1st 06:15 ALB Noah Philp (10) ASST: Cox & Freadrich
1st 06:57 ALB Chad Butcher (8) ASST: Freadrich & Pawlenchuk
1st 10:47 ALB Grayson Pawlenchuk (17) ASST: None
1st 16:19 ALB Lucas Nickles (7) ASST: Linaker
1st 18:28 ALB Grayson Pawlenchuk (18) ASST: Jevne & Butcher
3rd 02:19 ALB Tyler Soy (14) ASST: Owre & Davidson
3rd 04:03 ALB Noah Philp (11) ASST: Cox & Sanford
3rd 18:22 ALB Cole Linaker (1) ASST: Nickles & Carroll

Before the game I thought that the Bisons would win if they could get 25 shots. They had only 18, all of which were stopped by Brendan Burke. Tyler Brown stopped 33 of 41 in defeat.

This is a disappointment for the Bisons, in that they have not suffered a blow-out loss like this. They could use some reinforcements up front. Jonah Wasylak, Lucas Skrumeda, Tony Apetagon, and Geordie Keane were all missing. They will need them back for the playoffs.

This result ensured the Bisons of a playoff berth and left the Kittens hoping that UBC would lose twice to MRU. Brandon Holtby was back in goal for the Banjo-Cats and stopped 35 of 39 shots in a vain attempt to capture an ellusive playoff berth. Meanwhile, the Banjo-Mutts kept pace with Alberta in the race for first. Taran Kozun had a 20 save shutout. Thus, Regina's spirited second semester surge comes to an end. The Mutts no doubt celebrated in style, drinking from toilets, spraying fire hydrants, and bragging across the province's party lines.

The Hørny Ønes became the 3rd shutout victim of the night in this game. That's one thing. But those 54 shots on goal they allowed, which now seems an expected occurrence, really shows how this team has fallen down in the 2nd half. They went with their 3rd string goaltender, Nikolas Amundrud, as tonight's sacrifical lamb. Brodan Salmond needed just 14 saves for his shutout. The win allows Bedrock U to leapfrog their cross-town rivals into 3rd place.

The late night game on the coast clinched a playoff berth for the T-irds, launched them ahead of the Bisons into 5th place, and eliminated Regina. It also prevented MRU from regaining 3rd place. A point from UBC in the rematch would assure them of 5th place. A UBC win in regulation would mean that these teams would play in the quarter-final round next weekend at MRU. Rylan Toth stopped 18 of 20 for the win, in a game where the Bluegars mounted much less offence than is usual. Riley Morris stopped 27 of 30 for the loss.

Possible Playoffs matchups:
Mount Royal's loss to UBC, combined with Calgary's win, means that the Dino's jump into third spot in the standings and have a 1 point lead over the Cougars. The Dino's won't give it up, as they play Lethbridge in their last game on Saturday.
So for Alberta's sake, they will avoid a potential series with the Dino's, who swept them recently and instead will most likely draw the Cougars in a series to determine who goes to Halifax for Nationals.
Alberta has had Mount Royals number! Sask and Calgary might be close, but I would put my money on the Huskies advancing.

Feb 8: Bisons Downed in Regular Season Finale

The regular season has come to a close in the CW. Out East, the AUS has also wrapped and the OUA has two games left on Sunday. Here's what went down.

The Bisons rebounded effectively from the Friday night debacle. The Evil Monkeys grabbed a 3-0 first period lead, with two short-handed goals on the same penalty. Rather than fold the tent, the Bisons battled back to 3-2. Eventually it was an empty-netter that salted this one away. Overall, I would say that the Bisons carried the last two periods.

Quick Summary
1st 08:19 ALB Nolan Volcan (6) ASST: Soy & Owre
1st 12:44 ALB Dawson Davidson (4) ASST: Pawlenchuk & Butcher (SH)
1st 13:24 ALB Lucas Nickles (8) ASST: Sanford & Lange (SH)
2nd 03:41 MAN Brady Pouteau (5) ASST: Schioler & Thiessen
2nd 07:39 MAN Adam Henry (11) ASST: Thiessen & Dalke
2nd 10:56 ALB Noah Philp (12) ASST: Davidson & Sanford (PP)
3rd 19:16 ALB Tyler Soy (15) ASST: Owre & Carroll (EN)

Riley Lamb was in net for the Bisons and stopped 27 of 31 shots. Matt Berlin got the win (with 11 saves on 13 shots) but left mid-way with an injury. He reached up high to make a glove save and pulled something. Brendan Burke finished off with 9 saves on 9 shots.

Here are the CW stats on shorthanded play this year:

20-02-08-PK-PP-Stats.jpg

These stats are what has prevented the Bisons from moving into a top-4 type of team. Although the team made great progress this year, this is the area to address in the upcoming playoffs and next year as well. They scored 21 powerplay goals, but gave up 11 shorthanded goals. The other way on the PK they gave up a league-worst 32 powerplay goals and scored just one shorthanded goal in reply. That's a -21 overall. So even strength they were outscored just 63 to 54. A -9 ratio should be a much better record than 9-15-4.

The win gave the Monkeys 1st, and the Bisons 6th.

The sides switched locales for this return match. This was the end of the road for the Banjo-Cats, but the Banjo-Mutts gained temporary hold of 1st place with the win. In a nice nod, the Kittens gave graduating goaltender Dawson MacAuley the start, and he stopped 30 of 36 shots. However, the Kittens threw in the towel in the 2nd period. I saw lots of the 1st period before the Bison game started. Shots were 8-8 and Regina led 1-0. But the rest was a joke. Sask outshot them 28-5 and outscored them 6-1. Taran Kozun stopped 11 of 13 for the win.

The Hørny Ønes' inglorious 2nd semester came to a merciful conclusion. They basically went on sabbatical at Christmas. The Bedrock Dinos were led by Ryan Graham with two goals and Brodan Salmond's 27 saves. Jack Burgart took the loss with 39 saves on 45 shots.

This one was a matinee and the result temporarily vaulted the Bluegars into 3rd place and left the T-irds in striking distance of Manitoba in the race for 5th. Wyatt Hoflin got the win with 22 saves on 24 shots and Rylan Toth took the loss with 19 saves on 22 shots. Connor Rankin had two goals for MRU.

The playoff schedules are TBA but we know that the quarter-finals will be Manitoba at Calgary and UBC at Mount Royal.

If Manitoba beats Calgary, the semi-finals would be Manitoba at Alberta and UBC/MRU winner at Saskatchewan.

The Bisons are off to the Town of Bedrock for a 3-games-in-3-days playoff series. The formula for an underdog is simple: win the close game to force a game 3, and hope you have the fewer injuries.

This is not too much of a stretch. The Bisons are 2-2-0 against Bedrock this year, and 11-8-1 over the past 5 years. Will Fred and Barney don their Buffalo Lodge hats and cheer the Bisons to victory in Bedrock?

Will Manitoba get the karma edge after the wild conference final playoff game? To remind you, the Bisons mounted a big-time comeback and when they were down one point on the final play, they missed an attempted two-point conversion. The Dinos went on to win the national title. But the gutsy decision won the Bisons a lot of fans.

The keys to the series:

Bison PP/PK – My infamous chart shows how they have been victimized by shorthanded goals this year. They are -21, Calgary is +5.

Goaltending – Bedrock starter Matthew Greenfield has been gone since January. However Brodan Salmond has contributed nice numbers (9-2-3, 2.40 GAA, .900 S%). The Bison edge would be that they have co-starters and one of them needs to be hot. The Bison numbers have tumbled the last 4 weeks, but Tyler Brown and Riley Lamb are both still at or over .900 S%.

Who will have the big series? - The Dinos have Matt Alfaro, the CW's leading scorer, who went 1-7-8 in 4 games against the Bisons. On the other hand, sophomore Colton Veloso has finished strong and had 3 goals in the January series against Bedrock.

It is not often that the 4 v 5 quarter-final in the CW features two teams this far apart in the standings. Their split last weekend allowed UBC to slip past Manitoba into 5th place. MRU has shown the ability to defeat the contenders, having recently swept Calgary and starting the season with a sweep in Saskatchewan. Last week's win over MRU was UBC's only win over a top-4 team all year. Their cumulative record was 1-11-4 against those teams. It was their 8-3-1 record against the bottom half that put them into the playoffs. Note that the games in this series start at 7:30 MT, 8:30 CT.

In the Town of Bedrock, Mr. Slate had the Dinos ready to pounce in the first period. Coming back from an 0-4 hole in the playoffs is just not likely. The Bisons did stabilize but this one was over early.

Quick Summary

1st 11:30 Cal Lane Zablocki (1) ASST: Harrison & Shearer
1st 15:08 Cal Ryan Graham (1) ASST: Gibson

Bedrock led the shot clock 16-8 in the first period, and 18-17 the rest of the way. Brodan Salmond got the win (stopping 23 of 25) and Riley Lamb took the loss (stopping 28 of 34).

Game 2 is Saturday at 7:00 MT/8:00 CT. If required, game 3 is Sunday at 6:00 MT/7:00 CT.

Playoff victories for the T-irds have been a rarity. This is because they are very seldom the home team. So this game 1 road win is epic for UBC. Colton Kehler scored two 3rd period goals to break a 2-2 tie and Rylan Toth got the win with 26 saves on 28 shots. Riley Morris was tagged with the loss, with 20 saves on 24 shots.

The Bisons and Dinos were locked in quite a battle Saturday night. The Dinos managed to edge the Bisons despite a frantic conclusion to the game, which included a diving save by Bedrock goaltender Matthew Greenfield. Here's the scoring:

Quick Summary
1st 04:14 Cal Coda Gordon (1) ASST: None (SH)
1st 09:44 Man Brady Pouteau (1) ASST: Thiessen (PP)
2nd 15:58 Cal Coda Gordon (2) ASST: Hines & Alfaro
3rd No Scoring

Greenfield was making his return to the Dino net and had a good game, especially that game-saving late save. However, the Bisons managed just 14 shots on the night. And, once again, it was a short-handed goal that set them back. You have to do better than .500 with a man advantage. Riley Lamb again took the loss (stopping 30 of 32).

The Dinos will travel to Saskatown next weekend to face the Banjo-Mutts. That should be a good series.

There will be time for off-season cogitations on the Bison roster for 2020-21. This year they had loads of turnover, including solid recruits on defence (3 WHL grads) and goal (2 WHL and one MJHL). What they need is a group of 3 WHL forwards so they can have reliable scoring, forecheck lots, and stop those short-handed goals against. They also need to rack up some wins against the bottom half the league. This year they were 4-5-3 against those teams.

The Bluegars amassed a 4-1 lead early in the 3rd and appeared to be in cruise control. The T-irds rallied to make it close before MRU closed it out with an empty-netter. Riley Lindgren led MRU with 4 goals.Wyatt Hoflin stopped 24 of 27 for the win and Rylan Toth lost with 28 saves on 32 shots. Game three goes Sunday night

An upset in game 3! UBC have qualified for the CW semi-finals in 2007, 2014, 2015, and now 2020. Before this relative splurge of success, their previous semi-final appearance was 1990. So there will be celebration on the coast over this.

UBC built a 3-0 lead in the 1st period, and led 4-2 after two. MRU rallied with a big 3rd period effort, where they outshot the T-irds 16-4. However they needed a goal with one second left in regulation to force overtime. Austin Vetterl scored UBC's winning goal and Rylan Toth stopped 33 of 37 shots for the win. MRU went with Wyatt Hoflin, who gave up 3 goals on 6 shots in 9 minutes before being yanked. Riley Morris stopped 19 of 21 in relief.

So it's off to Saudi Alberta next weekend where the T-irds will face the Evil Monkeys for a berth in the U-Cup.

Need to have a good recruiting class and get those Bisons deeper into the CanadaWest playoffs.
Sirant has been there a long time, I think he coached when Manitoba came to Freddy for the Pete Kelly Cup,
mid 2000's??

Manitoba's challenge isn't a lack of talent on-campus.
It's that players don't want to play for this coach.
There are many former WHL players walking around campus who're not playing for the Bisons specifically because of the coaching.
The complete lack of fan support doesn't help either.

There are at least 6 WHL grads at each CW school who don't play hockey.

This was overly defensive even for a playoff game. Final shots were 19-12 in favour of the Banjo-Mutts. Taran Kozun got the win, and Matthew Greenfield took the loss. The teams exchanghed goals in the latter part of the 1st period, then that was it. Levi Cable and Collin Shirley scored for Sask, and Ryan Graham for Bedrock U. Game two is Saturday at 7:00 CT.

This is the result that shook up the university hockey world in all of Canada. The T-irds managed to keep it close and pull out an OT win despite being outshot 53-17. After two periods it was tied 2-2 and the Apes outshot UBC 15-2 in the 3rd period, and 9-1 in OT. It was as if UBC thought they'd get to a shoot-out. Rylan Toth got the win and Brendan Burke the loss. Jerret Smith had the GWG. Game 2 is Saturday at 7:00 MT or 8:00 CT.

So 14 out of the 23 students who attend Manitoba on a WHL scholarship AREN’T playing for the Bisons...ouch.

I counted 6 players who have not played for the Bisons. There were some added to last year's roster and were generally scratched or are no longer full-time students and not eligible. That's typical across the CW.

Here are the Elite Prospects links for the 6 who never played:
Ian Briscoe at eliteprospects.com
Cedric Chenier at eliteprospects.com
Drea Esposito at eliteprospects.com
Ryan Kubic at eliteprospects.com
Lasse M. Petersen at eliteprospects.com
Mark Taraschuk at eliteprospects.com

Based on stats, I don't believe any of those would crack the roster.

Once I started looking up some of those guys I noticed most didn’t really have much of a WHL career, with the exception of a couple guys like Laurencelle/Zajac.

Zajac graduated last year, and Laurencelle may have also. They both played.

Sask built a 4-1 lead and appeared to be cruising to an easy win. But quicker than you could say Yabba-Dabba-Doo the Dinos tied it up and it was off to overtime. Carson Stadnyk notched the winner after 21 minutes.

Once again, Taran Kozun got the win and Matthew Greenfield the loss. The Dinos had a 33-31 edge in shots. This was about as even as a game could be. No shock there.

Sask would host UBC or visit Alberta next weekend.

This was actually closer than Friday's game. But without heroics in goal, the T-irds were overwhelmed. The Evil Monkeys went with Matt Berlin in goal, and he stopped 19 of 20 shots for the win. Rylan Toth stopped 25 of 29 shots through two periods, before Patrick Dea stopped 3 of 5 in the finale. I suspect that was to rest Toth for game 3 on Sunday. Cole Linaker and and Curtis Miske scored twice each for the Monkeys.

Game 3 starts Sunday at 7:00 MT or 8:00 CT and is available on CanadaWest.tv.
