An afternoon game after a night game sometimes produces an odd, offensive game. And this was one of those.

The Bisons made two roster changes, starting Brown over Lamb in goal and Apetagon took over from Barley in the forwards. The Hørny Ønes shifted the defense pairings a bit but dressed the same 20 players.

The penalties were ultimately the difference. Lethbridge was 2-for-6 on the PP and the Bisons broke even, going 1-for-5 and giving up a shorthanded goal. Each side also had a goal waived off.
After each side had an early goal, the Bisons never got untracked once the penalties started kicking in. Veloso scored on a break-away mid-period. But within seconds of a PP ending, Guenter squeezed one under Brown's pads to tie the game. That save which somehow trickles through the pads seems to be Brown's problem area. It happened on this goal, the one waived off, and in the pre-season.
The 2nd period saw Lethbridge take the lead on a point shot. Wasylak tied it on a one-timer to the top shelf, and Henry gave the Bisons on a scramble upon the end of a PP. A PP deflection allowed the Horns to tie the game at 4-4 after two.

After being out-of-synch for two periods, the Bisons did get it together in the 3rd. But not until after a sloppy line change on a PP in the opening minute provided Maxwell and Lethbridge an opportunity to take the lead. This was the second such occurrence in the game.

The CW has a bye week next. The Bisons are headed to the Excited States for some non-conference play. On Oct 11-12 the Bisons are on the Road against MRU. The next home series is Oct 18-19 against Calgary.

Colton Veloso gave the Bisons a 1-0 lead in the 1st period but from then on it was all UND. The USCHO link had the alignment for both teams. Here's the Bisons:

The Omaha game story describes the game as a 3-3 tie. However, after two overtime periods a shoot-out was held, and it went 1-0 in favour of Omaha. The Bison line-up was the same as for the UND game, except that goaltending duties were split between Tyler Brown and Jeremy Link. Brown gave up 3 goals on 16 shots, and Link stopped all 29 shots he faced (including the prolonged overtime).

Does Saskatchewan ever play NCAA teams?

It has been a long time. This year they only had two home exhibition games and none on the road. Sounds like budget problems.

Budgets are fine boys calm down! the CW window for ex games with CW's new last weekend start date for league games, basically gives u 2 weekends and the ncaa bye week for available weekends
farmer's kids arent available for practice in August
so first weekend is out
everyone gets going on the home and homes with the cross river rivals (acac or cw) and us prairie boys have one home and home card to play so it seems like the coaches waited to weekend 3 for that and found a way to gather in Sask.
Coaches often wait for weekend three for a modified CW gathering
No place to put brick invitational at this point and weekend for the cross town rival and close home and homes happened again on weekend 4. prairie teams declined lengthy travel dispite ACAC schools willing to play you in rubber boots on yet to be ready natural ice facilities, just kidding but they are very eager to play. Long travel on weekend number 4 and a possible road weekend to open the season the following weekend is another reason to avoid weekend number 4
UBC started games in August and even travelled to AB, spending good cash and avoiding BC college action for a weekend and havent had a full roster since August tilts versus WISCO....
Regarding the NCAA weekend for CW schools, there are really only like three two game combos available . the UND option is a short bus trip for MAN and they get another game in there as well and hope that with the US exchange it is profitable.
the Colorado, Colorado College and AirForce option is not always available and break even at best. Plus three games in three nights and then a return to CW action three days later isnt a best schedule practice either. The Minnesota 2 game options cost money (US ) and nobody is telling the truth if they say they make money unless they are staying at the on campus hostels. the travel for CW schools to these places and busing around the Great Lakes isnt alot of fun either.
There is big value in the games! Everyone agrees!
Timing is everything and there isn't a lot of options with the early league start dates.

I already posted my look at the MRU roster a while back. Both sides were in the Excited States last week, and each picked up a point. The Bluegars had the more impressive pre-season and also managed a sweep of the Banjo Mutts in Saskatown to start the season. I picked them for #4 in the CW, myself.

A year ago this match-up would have drawn attention from U-Hockey fans from coast-to-coast. Now people are wondering if the Evil Monkeys will torment their banjo-lovin' canine guests.

CALGARY DINOSAURS (2-0-0, 8-1-1, OHT35 #1)

This match-up is interesting because the Dinos have been off to such a great. UBC have been fair-to-middling. Their only CW opponent so far has been Alberta. They are 3-0-0 against lower leagues, 0-2-2 against the Monkeys, and 0-2-0 against the NCAA. Hard to gauge.

In the CW it was Hockey Night in Alberta as each series was hosted by an Alberta team. The Bison game was a nail-biter. The rest were not.

Manitoba-MRU games used to be the hardest hitting games in Usports hockey. The sides got some smaller, quicker players and the games lost a little edge. However, tonight we got a bit of that back.

The Bisons were down to 17 skaters and two goaltenders, so the injury bug is around. They had their usual starting 6 on defence, and Riley Lamb started in goal. A notable scratch up front was Colton Veloso.

So three rookie Bisons with their first goals accounted for all the scoring.

Th e power plays were the difference. The Bluegars went 3-for-5 and the Bisons went 0-for-3. Riley Morris got the win with 24 saves on 27 shots. Riley Lamb took the loss with 34 saves on 38 shots.

The rematch is a twi-nighter starting at 3:00 MT or 4:00 CT on Saturday.

I watched the replay of this one after watching the Bison game. I am snowed in with a blizzard so I may as well stay up late and watch as many games as possible. The Evil Monkeys were by far the better team. The Mutts had some good stretches and are FAR from a weak team. But they seem like a run-of-the-mill CW team now. The Apes had five different scorers. Brendan Burke got the win with 27 saves/28 shots, and Travis Child got the loss with 35 saves/40 shots.

This was the most defensive game of the night. Bedrock U jumped out to a 3-0 1st period lead, then it was 4-1 after two. UBC then managed a paltry 3 shots in the 3rd period. Had they scored on every shot they had in the 3rd, they would have had a tie at best. The Dinos had four different goal-scorers. Matthew Greenfield stopped 19 of 20 for the win, and Rylan Toth stopped 15 of 19 for the loss.

At first this looks like a convincing win for the Hørny Ønes. However, the Kittens actually outshot them 41-31. To keep the theme of the night going, Lethbridge had four different goal scorers. Taz Burman stopped 40 of 41 for the win and Dawson MacAuley stopped just one of three shots he faced before being yanked after 4+ minutes of play. Brandon Holtby stopped 26 of 28 the rest of the way.

Oct 12: Bisons Rebound for a Split

The Bisons played in one of three matinees today. I'm not a big fan of Saturday afternoon games myself. Although I could see why the travelling team would much sooner play an earlier game. Now that each team has played one series at home and one on the road, here's how Saturday night went.

A split on the road at MRU is probably going to be looked upon as a pretty good weekend for the vast majority of teams as this season wears on. This win gives the Herd consecutive splits (2-2-0) and is the first blemish on the Bluegars' record (3-1-0).

The game was an oddity in that the Bluegars were running up the shot clock, however the Bisons were able to respond with odd-man rushes. As on Friday night, the teams swapped leads from time to time. However, the Bisons pulled ahead for good in the 2nd period, where they scored four goals, the last three unanswered, to take a 5-2 lead into the 3rd. The official stats say that the 3rd period shots were 17-1 in favour of MRU, which seems incorrect. In any event, MRU could draw back two goals but that was all.

The Bisons were again upset with the officials. MRU had two 5-on-3 powerplays and in this one Jonah Wasylak got the 10 minute misconduct for arguing. In the end, MRU was 3-for-8 on the PP and the Bisons were 2-for-5. However, it must be noted that the first Bison goal came 2 seconds after a PP expired so it was basically generated by PP pressure.

Riley Lamb got the win, and it appears that he has won the starter's job. He stopped 37 of 41 shots. Riley Morris suffered the loss with 6 saves on 11 shots through two periods. He was yanked in favour of Wyatt Hoflin in the 3rd period, and he stopped the lone shot credited.

Next Friday the Bisons return home to face the Bedrock Dinos, whilst MRU will visit the Evil Monkeys.

The T-irds had a 4-1 lead 12 minutes into the 2nd period. Then Mr. Slate must have devised a comeback strategy. Once again, UBC had just 16 skaters and two goaltenders dressed. They were 4-for-5 on the PP! Matthew Greenfield stopped 24-of-28 for the win, and Rylan Toth stopped 32 -of-37 for the loss.

The Bedrock Boys are now 4-0-0 and coming to Winnipeg next weekend. UBC is 0-2-2. However, they have played the two best teams (Alberta and Calgary).

The Banjo Cats once again recorded 41 shots yet lost. That's what happens when you fall behind 7-1 before mounting a comeback. Kyle Gordon scored twice for the Horny Ones. Taz Burman stopped 36-of-41 for the win. Regina again went through two goaltenders. Curtis Meger stopped 12-of-16 before being yanked in the early 2nd period. Brandon Holtby came on in to stop 8-of-11 and was tagged with the loss.

Lethbridge is now doing better than expected, with a record of 3-1-0. At 0-4-0 Regina already has a lot of ground to make up in the 24 remaining games.

As noted, lots of links have yet to be uploaded. I saw this as it was the only evening game. Sask played pretty well, as the overtime aspect would suggest. Nevertheless they are now 0-3-1. At least they are a point ahead of their provincial rival! The Evil Monkeys are 4-0-0. Matt Berlin stopped 24 of 26 shots for the win, and Taran Kozun stopped 34 of 37 for the loss. Fun Fact: Sask was 25-3-0 last year. They are now assured of a worse record after just four games.

In the Town of Bedrock the Dinos are off to the best start of any team in U-Hockey. They have swept Regina (now 0-4-0) and UBC (now 0-2-2). While the Bisons are 2-2-0, their opponents are both now 3-1-0 with, naturally, their only losses coming against the Bisons.

Last year, the Bisons held their own against the Dinos, going 2-2-0. Over the last 4 years, the Bisons are 9-6-1 against Calgary.

The Dinos have 6 players at or above a point-per-game pace: Matt Alfaro (5-4-9), Graham Black (2-6-8), Jordan Xavier (2-4-6), Ryan Gagnon (0-6-6), Coda Gordon (1-4-5), and Kaden Elder (2-2-4), all of whom are in the CW's top 20 scorers. Meanwhile, two Bisons are at that level: Adam Henry (1-5-6) and Jeremy Leipsic (2-3-5).

Matthew Greenfield has started 3-of-4 for the Dinos and has impressive stats (3-0-0, .910 S%, 1.89 GAA). Meanwhile, Bison rookie Riley Lamb has taken over the starter's role and has impressive stats himself (2-1-0, .915 S%, 3.03 GAA).

Last weekend, Josh Tripp dressed for his first games as a Bison. That leaves Devon Skoleski and Matthew Leblanc as the only players yet to dress.

The Hørny Ønes are likely satisfied with their record, whilst the Banjo Mutts are bewildered with theirs. I must say that the Mutts did not look bad against the Evil Monkeys last weekend, and they have played two strong teams. But let's face it – they lost twice at home to MRU and the Bisons just split on the road against MRU. The Mutts need 4 points here.

The Bluegars are off to a nice start. However, in the last 4 years, the Evil Monkeys are 15-1-0 against MRU. And the Monkeyes aren't looking too shabby so far, either. This is a home-and-home series. Are MRU deserving of my praise? This series will go a long way in categorizing them.

Both sides are winless, true, but the T-irds cannot be criticized too much. They have played the top two teams in the OHT35, so 0-2-2 is not bad. The Banjo Cats have some room for optimism, since they recorded 41 shots in each game last weekend. Both sides are desperate for points. UBC holds a massive 13-3 edge over Regina in the last four years.

The shots were 25-13 through two periods, and the score 3-2, both in favour of the Dinos. The Bison forwards did not manage a load of shots but did generate two high quality opportunities off passing plays, and two of those were converted.

In the 3rd period the shots were 25-1 for the Dinos. The TSN Turning Point would have been the 4-2 goal. After that one, the Dinos locked down the Bisons.

The rematch goes Saturday at 2:00 p.m.

I know it's early, but this was a must-win for the Banjo Mutts. In fact, Saturday's rematch is also a must-win game. The threat of going from 25-3 to a cellar-dweller would not sit well in Hillbillyland. Carson Stadnyk led the way with 2 goals. Taran Kozun got the win with an 18 save shut-out. Taz Burman got the loss after being yanked in the 2nd period, stopping 13 of 16 shots. Nikolas Amundrud finished with 22 saves on 24 shots.

Well this one will get the tongues wagging nation-wide. Like I said in pre-season, MRU recruited what they needed. I never pegged them to win 3 straight road games against Sask and Alberta, however. That Bison split last weekend sure looks good now, eh? The Evil Monkeys did rack up the shots, outshooting the Bluegars 39-28. Brendan Burke got the loss after a 1st period pulling when he stopped just 5 of 8 shots. Matt Berlin stopped 16 of 19 shots in relief. Wyatt Hoflin stopped 36 of 39 for the W. Connor Chartier scored twice for MRU, including a shorthanded penalty shot. MRU hosts Saturday's rematch.

On a night when the Evil Monkeys lose at home, the game gets pipped for the title of upset-of-the-night when the previously winless Banjo Cats steal the spotlight. The Tweety-Birds warned that they thought they saw a dangerous puddy-tat but nobody listened. Chalk one up for the Felines! Brand Holtby got the win, with 38 saves on 39 shots. Patrick Dea stopped 23 of 25 in defeat.

The only roster change for the Bisons wass that Tyler Brown replaced Jeremy Link as backup goaltender. No biggie. The other change was Devon Skoleski and Lucas Skrumeda switching lines. Skoleski scored twice, including the winner on a 2-on-1 with Adam Henry in 3-on-3 overtime. Skoleski missed all of the games up until now, so it was nice to see him back in the lineup. Skrumeda was paired with Ryan Carlsom (also a converted defenceman) and Nathan Halvorson on an effective checking line.

Despite the lop-sided shot clock on both nights, for all but about 15 minutes on Friday night, there was never more than a one-goal gap between the teams. The Bison goals were generally nice passing plays being converted. At the other end, Bedrock U must be concerned that possession and territory generates lots of mediocre shots. Usually when you see this many shots on goal, there are several periods where the game looks like a perpetual power play. Not the case here.

However you look at it, the Bisons have 4 points in 4 games against what have been the hottest two teams in the CW. So this has to be the decent start they needed with such a roster laden with rookies.

The Bisons host UBC next weekend on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon. Meanwhile, the Dinos are runnin' back to Saskatoon.

The Banjo Mutts picked apart the Horny Ones as best they could this weekend. This does not make up for the 0-3-1 start, but it sure goes a long way. A 28-game season vanishes quickly. Carson Stadnyk and Carter Folk each had two goals for Sask, and Taran Kozun stopped 19 of 22 shots for the win. At the other end, Nikolas Amundrud started but was yanked mid-way with 11 saves on 15 shots. Taz Burman mopped up with 20 saves on 24 shots. Despite the sweep, the Mutts remain 1 point (!) behind the Horny Ones, who are now 3-3-0.

My guess is the Evil Monkeys were feeling the pressure after losing their Friday night home game in this series. They are now 5-1-0 (2nd place) and the Bluegars fall to 4-2-0 (3rd place). The T-irds needed a big 3rd period to put this one away. It was 1-1 after two, and a goal in the 1st minute of the 3rd set the stage. Rylan Toth stopped 29 of 30 shots for the win, and Brandon Holtby stopped 31 of 35 in taking the loss. UBC had 16 shots in the 3rd period. The wekend split gave each side their first win of the season. Every team in the CW has at least one win and one loss now.

Next weekend the Birds come to town to face the Bisons in a Saturday night/Sunday afternoon double-header.

The T-irds, being located out in British California, do not face much 0of their CW rivals in pre-season. Last year, they played none of their co-CWs and this year faced only the Evil Monkeys. Then they started the regular season where their first two opponents were those same Primates and the Bedrock Dinos. All three series saw them lose once in regulation and once in OT. Not great, but nevertheless respectable for a middle-of-the-road team. All-in-all, it made them difficult to rate.

So then we got to last weekend and it was Tweety-Birds against Puddy-Tats. On home ice, a convincing sweep would have cast UBC in a favourable light. However, they needed the help of an umbrella-wielding little old lady to gain a split in a hard-fought series.

Now the T-irds are coming to Friendly Manitoba to face the Bisons, the very embodiment of .500 hockey. The Bisons were 1-2-1 against the T-irds last year, and over the last four years both sides are 8-7-1 on the head-to-head scoreboard.

One issue for the T-irds is injuries. This has happened before. Hockey in BC is not as rough and tumble as it is on the prairies. Therefore, my theory is that it requires some adjustment for them. The first thing I'll be checking is how many players they dress.

Their second issue is between the pipes, where veteran Rylan Toth has hogged all the ice time. He is 1-2-2, 3.68 GAA, .883 S%. His CW career numbers are 12-16-4, 3.23 GAA, .898 S%. Those are mid-range CW numbers. Backup Patrick Dea lost his only start where he surrendered two goals. Last year he was 5-5-1, 3.71 GAA, .880 S%.

The T-irds have no scorers in the Top 20. However, Quinn Benjafield and Carter Popoff both have 4 points, and Benjafield and Austin Glover each have 3 goals in 6 games.

Meanwhile, the Bisons have three players inside the Top 20 and two more tied for 20th. Captain and defenceman Adam Henry (2-5-7) and Keaton Jameson (1-6-7) are in a 6-way tie for 10th, Jeremey Leipsic (2-4-6) is in a 4-way tie for 16th, and Colton Veloso and Geordie Keane (both 2-3-5) are in a massive tie for 20th.

Keane is quite a story. He was on the team two years ago and dressed just four times, going pointless. After sitting out a season, he's working hard, grinding it out, and contributing decent offensive stats.

Without a Bison game Friday night, I can focus on the other series via CanadaWest.tv.

Who doesn't like a good Cougar fight? These games will not be arguments about spilled beer and one b**** putting the moves on another's boyfriend. They will be only about 2 points in the standings.

Now the Bluegars are on the move, and the Banjocats are desperately trying to pick up whatever scraps they can.

The Bluegars opened with a sweep of the Banjomutts, followed by splits with the Bisons and Evil Monkeys. In so doing, they have turned heads from coast-to-coast.

On the other hand, Team Hillbilly has had it rough. They opened being blitzed by Bedrock U, and things looked dismal. Then came a sweep in Lethbridge, where they lost even with 41 shots on goal per game. But just when all looked lost, they posted a win at UBC last weekend en route to s hard-fought split.

Players to watch? Well, Regina has no Top 20 scorers. Five players lead the team with 3 points each. Once again, they have three goaltenders trying to recover from shell-shock. Brandon Holtby has the best numbers, a respectable 1-2-0, 2.86 GAA, .912 S%. That could switch quickly. Rookie Curtis Meger is 0-1-0, 6.45, .839 S% and veteran Dawson MacAulay is 0-2-0, 9.47 GAA, and .750 S%. Yikes.

Meanwhile, MRU has 5 of the Top 9 scorers and 6 of the Top 20. That says it all!

This is the series I will likely watch first on Friday night. A lot of people might be surprised with my pre-season pick to place Bedrock U ahead of the Banjomutts. But so far it has panned out. The Dinos played 8 non-conference games, and Sask just the two. Maybe it is just a case where Sask needs to catch up to the conditioning of the other teams.

One note: Sask really dominated the Hørny Ønes last week. That doesn't make up for the way they were pushed around by MRU or Alberta, however. My feeling is that this series will be a TSN Turning Point for one team or the other.

I have a hunch that this will be the weekend's roadkill series. The Hørny Ønes had a dismal pre-season but then managed to squeeze two points out of the Bisons, then racked up four more against Regina. Things were looking up. Was last weekend a sign they were crashing back to Earth? The Evil Monkeys generally take no pity in these situations.

Both of these teams linked to WHL scholarship stories. It is always amazing to see how many players are included, and how many do not play for their school team. Lots of players also go to schools without teams. More detail is in the links. Here's the CW summary:

The lineup switch for the Bisons was that Lucas Skrumeda, who had been playing centre, was back on the blueline. Mitchell Dyck came out, and Nico Labossiere filled the gap up front.

The Bisons converted on two-out-of-three powerplays. UBC's attempted comeback was also based on powerplays, just that the two goals came on seven opportunities. Once the Bisons took their 4-0 lead, 7 of the 8 remaining penalties were to Bisons. The only UBC penalty came in an offsetting penalties situation. With the goaltending of Riley Lamb and a big lead, the Bisons never seemed panicked about the situation.

The Bisons do not have a lot of veterans this year, but their three 5th year players are all doing a great job and are leading the team. Forward Jonah Wasylak had two assists and an imposing physical presence. Adam Henry had two goals, and with Sean Christensen formed a first line defence pair.

The Bisons scored some nice goals on the night. Dylan Thiessen was set up by Skrumeda on a rare PP breakaway. Geordie Keane's goal was a tic-tac-toe set-up, Henry's first came from Wasylak's steal on Dea's mishandled play behind the net, and Henry's second was a traditional blast from the blueline on a powerplay. Matthew Stanley's empty-netter was about a 195-foot curling shot.

The win boosts the Bisons to 4-3-0, their first time over .500 since they won their opening game. UBC is now 1-4-2.

The rematch goes Sunday at 2:00 p.m.

Andrew Fyten scored twice and Wyatt Hoflin stopped 12 of 13 shots to pace the Bluegars to an easy win in this one. Dawson MacAuley stopped 24 of 30 in defeat.

This was also a tale of two games. In the 1st period, the Bluegars outshot the Banjocats 18-1 and built a 2-0 lead. The rest of the way, Regina was competitive in outshooting MRU 19-17 and scoring 3 goals each. The final MRU goal was an empty-netter. One note: If you were stuck in the popcorn line in the 2nd intermission you may have missed three goals. With MRU holding a 3-1 lead, Regina scored after 7 seconds of the 3rd. MRU scored 12 seconds later, and Regina scored again in 20 seconds. Riley Morris got the win (17 saves on 20 shots) and Brandon Holtby took another loss (30 saves on 34 shots).

The Bluegars are now 6-2-0 and the Banjocats fall to 1-7-0.

The Mutts answered the call in this tight affair. Had they lost, they would have been scrambling for a playoff berth. Taran Kozun got the win with 19 saves on 21 shots, and Matthew Greenfield stopped 24 of 27 in getting the loss.

Matt Alfaro's 7th and 8th goals of the season (including the overtime winner) led the way for the Dinos. Both teams stuck with their starting goaltender. Greenfield stopped 31 of 33 for the win, Kozun stopped 30 of 33 for the loss. The Mutts now hit .500 for the first time, at 3-3-2, and the Dinos are 6-1-1.

This was bad. The Evil Monkeys are just way better than the Hørny Ønes. Shots were 68-19. There must be a serious Viagra shortage in Lethbridge, or perhaps an over-abundance of bananas in Edmontown. Brendan Burke stopped 18 of 19 for the win, and Taz Burman stopped 59 of 68 for the loss.

Both sides switched goaltenders for this rematch. It seemed to do the Hørny Ønes some good. They held a 1-0 lead after one period. In the end, though, a valiant 55 save effort from Jack Burgart was not enough as he was tagged with a loss. Matt Berlin got the win for the Evil Monkeyswith 23 saves on 24 shots. The Apes now sit in first place with a 7-1-0 record. Lethbridge falls to 3-5-0 and are lone in 6th.

This was a tight game, with few penalties, and in the end it took an empty-netter to leave the Bisons with their 4th straight series split of the season. At 4-4-0 they are now two points ahead of the T-irds, who are now 2-4-2. The Bisons gave rookie Jeremy Link his first start in net, and up fronty Tony Apetagon was in for Nico Labossiere. Of note, each team had just one 1st period PP, and in the 2nd there were off-setting minors. It sure kept the game flowing. The 3rd period really flew by, though.

Following a conference bye next week, the Bisons will have back-to-back weekends in Banjoland, first against Regina and then against Sask. Their next home action is against the Evil Monkeys on November 22nd and 23rd.

The Mutts did not blow away the T-irds in this one, but a sweep against a decent side is a sign that the duelling banjos are now in synch with spoons and jugs in this hillbilly symphony. UBC jumped out to a 3-2 lead after one, and that was it for scoring until the 3rd. Backup Travis Child got the win for the Mutts whilst Rylan Toth got the loss. Shots were 29 each.

After a bye week, the Herd is now off to Saskatchewan back-to-back weekends. First to meet the Banjo Cats in Regina, and next to face the Banjo Mutts in Saskatoon. Hopefully, the team will not be too grossed out by bad breath permeating from the stands and the general stench of the place.

This has the makings of a trap weekend. Regina has had a bad start and have had a bye week to address what ails them. While they were overwhelmed by Calgary and MRU, they were quite respectable against Lethbridge and UBC. Meanwhile, the Bisons have split every series so far, including an exhibition series at home against these very Kittens.

Last year, Regina beat the Bisons 3-out-of-4. However, in the three previous seasons the Bisons won 11-out-of-12. Overall, the Bisons have won 7 of the last 8 games played in Regina.

A quick look at the stats pages shows Regina's problems. Their top scorer is Conner Chaulk (1-4-5), and second is Landon Peel (0-4-4). The rest of the roster has 3 points or fewer. In goal, they once again are using all three goaltenders due to the stress of playing in the Regina kitty litter.

The Bisons are led by Adam Henry (4-5-9) and Keaton Jameson (1-8-9), part of a 5-way tie for 9th in conference scoring. In goal, Riley Lamb has taken the starting role and has been both busy and effective. His numbers are 4-2-0, .923 S%, 3.13 GAA. Jeremy Link got his first start last weekend, so it looks like he has jumped past Tyler Brown in the depth chart.

The nation's feature match-up of the weekend comes from the heart of #Wexit Country. The Bedrock Boys got it going during the pre-season and have maintained the pace ever since. This is a home-and-home series, Friday in Calgary and Saturday in Edmontown. The Evil Monkeys and Dinos had some tight battles in pre-season, and I expect these games to be hard-fought as well.

The Hørny Ønes have managed a few points here and there and are close enough to the middle of the standings to be confused with a playoff contender. I suspect they will falter a bit, and it could come in this home-and-home series. The Bluegars are a bit of surprise team thus far, moreso with others than with me. I liked their recruiting this year.

Nov 8: It Was Crazier than Moonshine

This was a 3-game Friday night in the CW, due to Sask and UBC having played during the bye week last week. There were two #Wexit series in Saudi Alberta, and an old GPAC rivalry revived.

This one had a few twists. The Regina broadcast crew seemed to like the game – claiming it was the best of the season thus far for the Banjocats. I have to admit that they looked better than their record.

The Bison line-up had some twists. LeagueStat listed 10 forwards and 8 defencemen. As usual, Ryan Carlson played forward instead of defence. But Lucas Skrumeda seemed to be (like 2 weeks ago) on defence again. Making his season debut was Carter Doerksen. Not sure if this is a sign of injuries amongst the forwards. Also, Tyler Brown was the backup goalie while Jeremy Link was scratched. Other scratches were Dyck, Barley, Labossiere, Halvorson, and Leblanc.

The Bisons held a 15-14 edge in shots and had a 2-1 lead heading into the 3rd period. Jonah Wasylak made it 3-1 as he blocked a pass and then scored on a breakaway. From that point onwards, the Bisons went into a bit of a shell. That mostly worked. But Regina poured it on something fierce in the dying minutes. When they made it 3-2 with 3 minutes left, the Kittens went catnip crazy and wreaked havoc in the Bison zone. Adam Henry took a penalty during a net-front scramble with just 28 seconds left. Just when it looked like the Bisons were about to kill it off, the Banjo-Boys got one in with 1.3 seconds left.

On to overtime! There, one Kitten was caught high-sticking and before you could say “powerplay”, Keaton Jamieson scored the winning goal.

The Bisons are now 5-4-0 and the Cougars fall to 1-8-0. The rematch goes Saturday 3:00 p.m.

I tuned into this game after the Bison game was over. I gave up on it because the sound was no good and the picture periodically froze. It was 1-1 when I turned away. Within 5 minutes of play it was suddenly 4-2 for the Evil Monkeys. Brendan Burke got the win, stopping 16 of 19 shots. Matthew Greenfeld suffered the loss, with 19 saves on 23 shots. The Evil Monkeys are 8-1-0 and Bedrock U is 6-2-1, and have fallen into 3rd place.

The Hørny Ønes were no match for the Bluegars. In between my stints trying to watch the Bedrock/Monkeys play, I saw the Bluegars notch a couple. Wyatt Hoflin stopped 20 of 22 for the win and Taz Burman stopped 34 of 40 for the loss. The win vaults MRU into 2nd place with a 7-2-0 record, and keeps the Hørny Ønes in 7th (one point behind UBC) at 3-6-0.

The Apes registered an emphatic win here. Suddenly, the Dinos' hopes for 1st place now seem a page right out of history. Grayson Pawlenchuk scored twice for the Evil Monkeys and Matt Berlin stopped 18 of 19 for the win. Matthew Greenfield stopped 15 of 20 shots for the loss before being yanked in the 2nd period. Brodan Salmond stopped 15 of 16 in a mop-up effort. I switched away from this game on CanadaWest.tv to see MRU v Lethbridge.
