August was very hot and beautiful too. We just couldn’t tell because the smoke prevented us from seeing the sky all month.

August was great except for the smoke. April was brutal (cold and snowy) and now apparently there is going to be snow in September. Summers appear to be getting shorter...at least this year.

Well I guess we can be thankful that the end of the world didn't happen. Unless of course you went on a binge at the casinos and strippers

Years ago I was a casino dealer. One night some yokel was at my table and proudly proclaimed. "I'm in town for three days and have ten grand to blow between this place and the strip club across the street!"

He must have already maxed out his RRSP contributions. :sarcasm:

I knew someone that dealt with bankruptcy claims and she said a lot of people that try scam make sure to be seen at casinos. Max out all their credit and just go wild. This way they can say they had a gambling problem. Gets really tough to prove just how much a person is blowing.

Or he knew divorce was imminent and started clearing assets.

A lot would depend how much they were trying to claim they lost and over what time period.

Big, high limit players have to be tracked as there are anti-money laundering guidelines.

If somebody wanted to claim they lost $250K over a year. A grand or two at a time, coming in pretty regularly, yeah that could fly under the radar.

Someone claiming to lose $1 million over a few months really only could do it in the VIP room, maybe at the craps table but that would still attract a lot of attention.

As much as we can joke about this the health problems of sustained +10 air quality advisory is not at all harmless. So that everybody here experiencing that for a month got an inordinate dose of potential carcinogenic smoke. Aside from that there are those that had immediate problems with their respiratory or circulatory system due to this, or that still will. Theres cases where people went jogging in such conditions and had significant and in some cases irreversible damage.

What caused me concern through all this is how the advisories did not match the standardized advisories that are supposed to occur when Air Quality or Fine Particle Matter concentrations were as high as they were.

Hey people in Beijing breath that lovely air quality all the time, they are fine. Life must go on, the world can't stop just because its bad for you out there. The truth is we are all expendable in the eyes of society unless we happen to be the ones in the big comfy chairs calling the shots. If they actually wanted to follow the air quality rules then a lot of things would have been shut down and suspended on those 10+ days but there was minimal impact in terms of any stoppage of services. I went to work that day and was expected to be outside for 3 hours, i felt fine, granted the effects won't hit me till much later i am sure, and i will regret it but, i still had to do my job and nobody told me to hide indoors.

Well we live in Canada, in a northern non populous country in a relatively pristine area and within a country that holds National Parks and preserved areas in fairly high stead. In a winter temperate climate in a low population area air pollution should not be this high.

I wouldn't live in China, NY, LA, London, Mexico City and a large part of the reason would be air quality related.

Both my parents smoked and I grew up in a house where you could literally crouch under the smoke cloud that hung in the rooms where they smoked. Like growing up in a bingo hall. :)

Metoo..

Parents. Chain Smokers. Both.

Worst thing were winter car rides.

Oh fun, I'm turning blue back here...I'm actually allergic to tobacco.

Actually the single worst things was the old Edmonton Gardens and 6K smoking so much in that barn that the fire trucks would come by regularly thinking the damn thing was on fire (leaks in the brick walls were plentiful.) At least that was a modicum of ventilation...

They stopped one playoff game between Oil Kings and Calgary Centennials telling people the game could not resume until people butted out as the players were hacking on ice. Never forgot that.

This year has been extremely bad for the number of power outages we have suffered because of storms. There haven’t even been a lot of storms, but every time one rolls through it seems we lose power. Just lost power 10 minutes ago.

Interesting, I don't think my house has lost power this year

Kind of in reverse though. Went from one extreme to another.

People had to get all up in arms about smoking, understandable in restaurants and malls whatever, but then had to push it toward pubs and lounges forcing them all outside. Because as you know people go to pubs to play pool and get healthy. Now you have to deal with it walking down sidewalks. Just couldn't take the win of places under 18 and leave it alone, angering all sides. They don't want to be outside smoking in winter or rain anymore than people do want to walk by it. Common ground, unacceptable.

My wife and I stopped resetting the clock on the microwave because when we did the power was sure to go out that night.

I had to go check my microwave just to see if theres a clock hidden there somewhere...you had me curious.

I set the stove clock and think that's kind of going overboard. If you're changing a microwave clock you're tempting fate with all that changing.

Power failures are weird. For a couple years we were getting them regular. Bad ones too, out for hours.

Have not experience a power failure now in 4 years,,,,,,...………..

lights and computer go off on cue (black darkness ensues)

edit; we actually had a power failure (brief) last night or could be long as I was sleeping. All the clocks are screwed.

Whats the chances, really, of that occurring randomly after I tempted fate just last night with this post???

jebus What you people been doing in Hawaii this is like two now and you hardly ever get hit with Hurricanes. Then the raging furnace of an angry volcano.

This all sounds like the start of a Godzilla remake. I gotta tell you.

Stay safe man.

Freezing rain last night around 10pm. Sidewalks and side roads this am are a joke. Main roads OK. But just getting out of a neighborhood or trying to walk not so great.

Advisory to stay home if you can today.

Lots of jackknifed trucks, vehicles off road.

East end of the City, Sherwood Park, and outlying highways particularly impacted as that's where most of the freezing rain event occurred.

Don't even try Edmonton -Nisku.

stay safe
