He was never anywhere remotely close to being one of the best of his generation.
No, but he could do it all well. Hit for power, walked a lot (k'd a bit too), stole bases, played gg center.

Would have been nice to see him get a few more prime years before he fell apart.

Personally I think it's pretty cool to see all these tactical experiments in baseball now. Old timers were complaining that with a reduced focus on 'smallball' the game is getting samey, well, now teams - equipped with advanced analysis tools - can come up with tactical nuances that actually help them win games.

Remember when Bud Norris had an issue with the fact Singleton got a major league contract before a debut? Good times.
