I think people in Vancouver take it for granted how much the Sedins contribute to the community, but people in other markets may not be as fully aware. It is truly remarkable, similar to things that PK Subban has done in Montreal, and many other NHL'ers have done but that often goes under the radar in other markets.
IIRC, the story goes that they wanted certain significant donations to be anonymous and unheralded, but were persuaded to have it publicized to generate matching donations. I know they have made other significant donations within the community that have not been publicized.
