Every year there's a mock draft done by the team boards of HF -- here are the results of 2015, 2016, and 2017. Rules are easy: just pick the player you want your team to draft based on who is still available; "trade the pick" is not an option ;)

There's cases to be made for many players, but I really like Wahlstrom's mix of offensive ability and physical play.

I don't envy Chayka and Co for having to pick this one haha. Lots of solid options! But I think they will do a good job.

For me I kind of came down between Boqvist and Wahlstrom. IF Boqvist can stay healthy and develop properly, could be a great player. But Wahlstrom has a bit less of a question mark for me.

A Rockwellian Pleasantville
Hughes. He's just so dynamic.
I’ve rewatched a few U18 games now (seen most of the USA games twice) and there’s A LOT to like about Wahlstrom. But I see where you’re coming from. Hughes has “it” in a way that Wahlstrom doesn’t. Wahlstrom has a unique skill set and a he does a couple of things really well, and it’s very useful and projects well and would meet our needs well, but he just doesn’t “look” like a Top 5 pick out there. Hughes does. He’s a jaw dropper.

That Chicago pick isn’t looking bad to me right now. If we can move the Carolina 3rd and our 1st for 8th overall and the Nashville 1st, I’d proabably pull the trigger. If Wahlstrom is still there at eight, that’s even better. If he’s gone, that means a higher chance that Hughes is still available. If Hughes and Wahlstrom are both gone than maybe Tkachuk is there. If all three are gone, then we probably have our choice of Bouchard or Kotkaniemi.
