The signing of Beagle and Roussel remind me of when gullible people pay large sums of money for magic pills ( in this case "intangibles") that will magically make them better. A rational person would realize hm sometimes you have to suffer a bit to get better and live with some pain ( ie let the young guys figure it out)

It's still sinking for me that the organization jointly took a look at the NHL roster, and the free agent landscape, and proceeded to conclude Jay freaking Beagle is on the "must have" shopping list. Like to the point where you give out a contract that makes you the butt of every joke about overpaying free agents. We're talking a fourth line faceoff specialist that can barely manage 10 minutes of ice a night.

This is Canucks life.

I disagree strenuously that not treating a celebrity like a role model is the same thing as not falling in love.

I don't think you're following what I'm saying. First of all, this discussion pertains mostly to young children, teens, and young adults. Those are ages when people are most impacted by "role modeling". So when you say "don't treat millionaire athletes like role models", you are really asking this of young children and teens who are naturally inclined to look to adults for cues for appropriate behaviours. Then factor this in with another natural tendency which is to idolize people who excel in some facet of life.

So who exactly are you directing your "advice" towards? Children? Parents of these children? If it is the former, I would counter that it is not within their control and is a very natural, human behaviour. If it is the latter, then I'd say it is largely out of the control of parents to "chose" who their children idolize, short of completely isolating them from sports and celebrities in general.

Either way its a very unrealistic expectation to have.

Ignoring term and dollar figures, the only way these signings make sense to me is if Benning plans to trade Sutter and Gagner (retaining salary) and play a top six made up entirely of young guys and a gritty, defensively sound veteran bottom six.

Nothing in Benning's past management philosophy suggests that this is his plan though.

His PK and defensive numbers are actually not good. You have a 32 year old you are paying to be good at face offs.

To me this July 1st has been very demoralizing as a Canuck fan. Any good will for drafting Quinn Hughes has all but evaporated because it is beyond question now that this management will ever get it and know how to properly rebuild. The drafting is decent but the pro scouting and contract negotiating is just simply incompetent. The long term ramifications of this terrible roster management will be felt for years. Bad enough we have to wait out 4 more years of f***ing Loui Eriksson. Now there is more deadwood added to the pile that will be in the way of good young players, that will actually be fun to watch.

Maybe I'm a biased fan who conveniently ignores transgressions by Canucks - but I don't recall Cooke making a reputation on those headshots (or knee on knee hits) until after he left the team.

And I ALREADY said I'm in the minority here with respect to viewing Roussell as a player. It's just my OWN opinion.

Many of those guys don't go around taking runs at goalies or other things Roussel was known for. You run around like Brad Marchand's relative, you have to expect the opposition to respond in kind. Maybe he's changed his game. We shall see.

But as I said in another thread, perhaps my judgement is clouded by these "instigator type of players". I had hoped we closed the chapter on the team having those kinds of players when Burrows was dealt.

i also was hoping not to develop one in the rebuild, let alone go out of our way to sign one long term.

continuously for 18 years we have had at least one of ruutu, cooke, torres and burrows.

now, after a one year gap, we have roussel for 4 years . he's maybe not quite a cooke or a torres, but it's not a good thing for the branded personality of this team and you have to wonder who in ownership or management wanted that for this team once again.
