Felt like crap to the point that I couldn't sit through most of last night's games. Sounds like a positive night for our boys (as well as a US win!). Anyone care to do a brief summary on Ty, Talvitie and Zetterlund? Much appreciated. :)

In all fairness Smith looked to me like he piled up the minutes with CAN well ahead. We will have to see what they do in a competitive game to properly evaluate that team and Smith.

Yeah, tough to read too much into it in a blowout like this. However, must be something to him playing 4+ minutes more than any other d-man. Doubt it was about resting the other guys and maybe more sending a message to them and/or rewarding Smith.

Maybe evaluating what they've got in Smith for future games?

Any reason why Walsh was left of the USA team? They could have used his big shot in a tourney like this.

I don't know and that still frustrates me. Not sure how you go from being one of the final cuts last year to not even getting an invite to the camp, especially with Walsh having a good start this season (more than a PPG). Read somewhere that they seemed to favor players that played for the US development team (Walsh did not), but not sure if there's anything to that or not.

I did ask The Athletic's Cory Pronman if he was surprised that Walsh was not even invited to the Team USA camp this season and this was his reply:

Not shocked. I like him but don't think he's a top-end guy. I'd have taken him over St. Ivany though.

Just looking at the roster it seems they wanted big guys who play defense first.

Hughes is the only little guy on D. He and Miller really the only guys who bring offense.

I also figure Hughes is getting first unit pp duties. So they are not going to bring on a player who doesn't fit their mold only to shoot on the 2nd pp unit.

Their comment was that they had too many people who can pass and shoot the puck so presumably they needed more people who couldn't.

They probably meant to say they needed defensive/pk specialist for the last spot. Either way, you get a good idea of the people making decisions there when comments like that come out.

Coaching staff will most likely reverse those ice times in more critical games.

1)Anderson Samberg and St.Ivany did not come through the USDP. Hughes and Miller did, but those guys are no brainers, Kemp did and he's one you can question. Anderson as brother to Joey Anderson who did come through USDP. So maybe on that?

Now Kemp is a Yale guy, as is St. Ivany. Likewise Anderson and Samberg are both Minnesota Duluth guys, so you wonder if they put weight into the fact that these guys are comfortable with each other.

2)If Pronman comes right out as says "not shocked, he's not a top end guy" we really shouldn't get bent out of shape about the decision.

Yea tough to tell. Bouchard came into the tournament supposed to be one of their top guys, but he made a lot of bad and careless mistakes last night. Against Denmark they got away with it, but if he played like that against a better team he would have been torched for sure.

Ya, no reason to think that Smith won't continue on as a top minute eater. He's been a fixture with Canada's int'l team, was the captain of the gold winning U-18 squad last year, was on the U-18 as a 16 year old, and was captain of the U-17 team that season as well.

Do I expect he will play far more then any other defender going fwd? No but I don't expect him to be playing 12 minutes in a game either.

The coach seems to have a mentality that he has to play 19 year olds as a priority, so we'll see what happens with Smith who is younger.

On the main board FIN WJC roster thread the discussion today was how to get the most out of the team after getting outplayed by SWE. Several FIN fan posters have suggested bumping Talvite up to the top line. Maybe just because he scored but I also think there is an element of fearlessness and confidence he adds. Someone here recently compared him to Coleman and I would say that from a style and demeanor stance that is a good comparison. Maybe someone who doesn’t quite have the hands or creativity to play a regular top six role but when it’s time to show some guts and punch back you want those guys out there. Pretty impressive that a kid who many of the national team fans saw as an afterthought is suddenly getting support to play a top line role.

He’s got a long way to go still but as I’ve always maintained since watching him last season - he looks at ease playing with and against the best players his own age. If I’m Shero I show him the love this tourney and make sure he understands there is a place for him in the organization and then sign him after next season.
