It’s a shame that this is the only playoff series we’d get to witness Paul Coffey in a Kings uniform. Coffey actually led the Kings in playoff goals that year with 4 in 6, and tied for the team lead in points with 7 in 6 (along with Gretzky and Luc).

Should have kept him. Stupid trade for Carson.

Ranks up there with Zhitnik and Lucic trades that wee terribad.

People on the Kings board seem to despise Vegas, because of their fans, but what could the Kings learn from the success of Vegas over the last couple of seasons, and the Islanders this season. Neither of these teams had a player with a cap hit even close to approaching $8M, much less $10M.

I think have $5M-$6M cap hit players throughout the lineup is starting to look like a pretty good idea based on their success. Of course, as soon as Vegas acquired the 26-year old Mark Stone, they got a little stupid with an 8-year, $9.5M cap hit contract for him, but at least he will be 34 instead of 37 when it's done.

The Islanders were also more than willing to give Tavares whatever he wanted. The real test is not paying guys after you've won. Neither the Islanders or Knights have won. Not many teams that have won have allowed big name players to leave.

The problem is we dont even know what DLs plan was. Maybe hed have traded Quick?

It took until King was a UFA to be until DL traded anyone that played any sort of role on either Cup team. He wasn't going to trade Quick. He would've had to sign Bishop before trading Quick, which would've put him up against the cap wall, and he would've been picked apart in any deal for Quick. It's not like Bishop is that much younger, and with the tax issue, and him going back to the area where he grew up, whatever contract he would've signed with the Kings wouldn't have been a good one. Bishop was short term because Quick was coming back from injury. DL was still trying to make the playoffs. That's it.

There are ways to extend it though. Takes some luck and great roster construction. Look at Washington.

Yeah, they were one of the first teams to give out those giant contracts. Even before GMs got too clever and put those fake years at the end. It's kept Ovechkin at the same cap hit all these years. Then they end up winning in the year that their own GM said their window had probably closed. So who the hell knows.

Had Gretzky not been hurt, Coffey probably isn't dealt.

It really was. Even with Coffey's deficiencies in his own end, he was still an elite puck mover and went on the win the Norris Trophy the season after the Kings dealt him.

Pretty much everything after '93 went wrong for the Kings until the late 90s.

Some Canadians have such a weird little complex with that stuff. Then again, to me Canada feels like one small village of 37m people.

Someone put up a poll for which American team us Americans will cheer for.

I don't get those who try to turn this thing into a national tournament. Fans with that mentality should probably switch over to the World Championships if they're looking for national pride.

I remember that trade because Gary Shuchuk who was part of that trade scored the OT goal in Game 5 of the Smythe Final versus the Canucks to give the Kings the opportunity to close the series out in Game 6, which they did.

But yeah, terrible trade.

Some Americans love that streak. No Cup in Canada since 93’.

Might get to pop the champagne corks again. Only the Leafs remain.

The Coffey trade was all Melrose. They would've been a better team in 93' than they were after the trade. It was at that point everything started to change.

Read some old topics the last couple of days.

That Calgary fanbase here on this site.....wow....and not only a few fans....worrysome.

Close second to the Toronto IMO.

You mean all Blake had to do was hire Craig Berube!?! Who knew? Yeah, I don't think it would have worked with this bunch either.

At the very least, Craig Berube would’ve knocked their lights out if he saw their work ethic. Especially that p***y Toffoli.

But as you suggested, nobody was going to make chicken salad out of this chicken shit squad.
