Again the coaches confirm what I've been saying. Samorukov is a stud. He's the best defensive dman in the OHL. He found his offense, which since world Juniors has been as good as Bouchard. He's tough as Nails. He's so incredibly smart and well positioned.

We might honestly have a 25-30 min a night all situations dman in the making here. Please don't mess up this development!

I'm not a big Bouchard fan but he's still a better prospect than Wilde. It's not like Bouchard is having such a poor season that his stock has dropped that much or that Wilde has all of a sudden become an elite prospect.

However, I'm really disliking the McLeod over Thomas pick more and more as the season wears on. I'm getting a Benson vs. DeBrincat vibe, passing on the higher offensive upside for the safer pick.

Hot take: Benson will end up having the better NHL career than Debrincat when it's all said and done.

Interesting to see Ryan Suzuki get so many great placements as well: second smartest player in the Eastern Conference, best playmaker, second best stickhandler. If he goes as low as 25 or so (which is what I've seen a lot of recently), I think he has the potential to be a huge steal at that level. Definitely legit concerns about his compete level, refusal to drive into the hard areas around the net, and his skating not being amazing enough to make up for those things, but I still like the tools he's got.

Re: Wilde - I'm impressed by what he's done this year, but I was also really concerned last year that he relied too much on his tools. He's on his way to proving me wrong, we'll see how it goes once he eventually steps up a level. He has/had the tools to dominate the OHL for sure.

I like Benson and I just want to clarify that it wasn't a put down of Benson when I made the Benson/DeBrincat comment but I'd put the chances of him having a better career than DeBrincat at virtually zero.

In any event, my point with the McLeod/Thomas comparison was, once again, going with the safer prospect over the higher upside prospect, not that I'm comparing Thomas to DeBrincat but more about draft strategy.

That is a hawt taeke considering Debrincat has a 2 year head start in the NHL and probably 3 if the Oilers keep Benson down for 1 more year.

I think McLeod over Thomas is another example at the team trying to draft a certain type of team instead of the best players.

We used to try to be the next Boston or LA so we drafted coke machines. Now the trend is speed so we drafted that over skill. Thankfully McLeod isn't a terrible pick but I was pulling for Thomas. I also really wanted DeBrincat, Jenner and Toffoli in the 2nd round of their draft years. I'm not saying I know everything, but I wonder what our OHL scouts are doing when I see it better than them. I know I'm far from the only one here.

Thankfully they seem to be doing better lately with Samorukov and Maksimov in later rounds.

To be clear McLeod was projected to go in the late first round. It’s not like he was a bad pick.

Thomas had red flags too. It happens when you are getting to the second round.

He may be a better junior player but we need to reserve judgement on these guys until they prove something in the pros.

I will always be furious that they didn’t pick Jenner. Wasn’t that the one where they picked Musil?

McLeods peak imo is a third liner. Thomas is a top 6 guy. McLeod is more likely to reach his but his ceiling is pretty low

Too early to tell. McLeod's potential could be anywhere from a complimentary top liner to a middle 6 player. He certainly has all the tools and the toolbox. I believe his issue is consistency

It’s hard to say for sure. I don’t think McLeod is going to be a big scorer just based on the fact he’s not running the table in juniors but I’m not sure Thomas is going to be that much better.

Although to be honest I would have been fine picking him where we picked McLeod. I’m just glad we didn’t go walkabout and actually picked someone who looks like a player.

Debrincat has a huge head start but I don't think it's as crazy a thought as some are making it out to be. Benson likely won't put up the points that Debrincat has but he'll impact the game in other ways. Kinda like comparing TJ Oshie to prime Chris Kunitz.

Watching him here and there the last couple of months he just looks so confident. Its like he just realised the game is easy.

For all the shit that we give Chiarelli, his drafts are all very promising. Our weakest one is the 2016 draft, and it's arguably more a problem with player development rather than talent identification.
