Is six points still the goal? Seems like we should aim higher with a better team.

It's a Babcock thing. He has, as far as I know, always broken down his teams season in 5 game segments with the goal to get 6 points. The belief is that is the minimum point total to secure a playoff birth.

I have no doubt that the internal team goal is to get more points than that, but this is a sort of measuring stick.

I think this thread should get a sticky at the top so it remains on the 1st page for the whole season.

Agreed, too many times last year I wasn't able to find this thread easily and enjoy using it for updates on recent play.

Unless we go with fractions then 7 is the next number which rounds up to 115 points over a season. I agree that may be a level we could but by making that the level that denotes success seems like a bit much. 110 isn't a failure. 6 in 5 makes it pretty close to the playoff cutoff which can be something that can be followed as well.

Update: Segment 1 is a success with a game to go! Off to a good start (points wise at least).

Nice work @wingman75, next segment will be a good test for this team against Washington, Pittsburgh and Winnipeg. LA and STL are no pushovers by any means either.

Could've gone perfect but no complaints getting 8/10 points. The next five will be more difficult, though I still see us winning three games at least.

    *DEEP MOVIE TRAILER VOICE*

The next 5 games are all against top 10 teams. But Toronto has shown that they can rise above and play in a league of their own. Starting with the reigning champions, the Leafs will have to learn that to be the best, you have to beat the best. Can the Leafs rise up for their country to defeat the three headed monstrosity lead by Russian Red Allstar Alexander Ovechkin? Next it doesn't get any easier, as the Leafs have to overcome two more recent champs in LA and Pittsburgh facing off against known legends such as Drew Doughty, Johnathin Quick, Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. Afterwords, its off to St. Louis to play against the team that rises above to dominate regular season after regular season before ending it all against their fellow Canadian rivals from the West, who have nothing to lose and everything to prove as they compete for the glory of it all that is lord Stanley's mug. Featuring Leonardo Dicaprio as Austin Matthews, Johnny Depp as Mitch Marner, Brad Pitt as Morgan Rielly, Charlie Sheen as William Nylander Jeff Goldbloom as Mike Babcock and Morgan Freeman as Kyle Dubas. This is, The Next Five. Rated PG 13.

    Great job!

    We should sticky this.

The only thing I might add would be season point pace. I think we're at 109 right now or something like that.

    From last year...

    • President's Trophy won in 2017-2018 with 117 points
    • Atlantic division won in 2017-2018 with 113 points
    • Leafs finished 2017-2018 with 105 points
    • Lowest points in 2017-2018 for a playoff team was 95 points

Beat Winnipeg and we are still above pace, despite our entire team being garbage according to the PGT

I added the season point pace and adjusted some of the other columns. Good suggestion. I think it adds to the table well. Thanks!!

To be fair, the team was garbage in that game... doesn't mean we are still not a good team when the players are actually engaged. Even if we lose, we are "on pace".

Was looking at our schedule and just felt this was a brutal stretch. Most of November is pretty tough too. Going 6-1 to start was a big help. But we really need to get through the next 5ish weeks. If we can, December looks like a feast with about 10 fairly winnable games. February and March look pretty tame too which will help down the stretch.

Is there a posted "difficulty index" for games ?

quantified number for each game ?

We need two wins to have a successful segment.

I think we can do it.

Grossest win of the season clinches segment 3. Three for three now and 2 points above the pace.
