Nice to see Sautner scoring in his first game back
Gaunce makes it 5-2 on a deflection, 4 goals for Utica already in the 3rd.
Oh hell yes
Mckenna looks terrible
What not our prized goalie
This is one case where seeing was anything but believing
We sometimes win inspite of ourselves.
made my Friday that much better.
The touch on this one was rather deft for a large household appliance...
McKenna helping the playoff push!
Comets centers tonight (2/8/19);
Pathetic useage of Gaunce on left wing.
Bancks and Hamilton are veterans. Would have dumped them both in a second just to sign O'Reilly, once again an AHL All-Star this season while playing for the Iowa Wild, $700K/$350kK, 37/pts/40 GP.
34 total pts from 4 players compared to Cal's 37
Gaudette 11pts/12GP/Darcy14pts/41GP (he plays for the center who is out)
Bet you the rookies on the wings and even Boucher and MacEwen all have bigger numbers than they do now. Might even have some more younger talented wings since Woods, Hamilton, Bancks and Arseneau would all have been expendable. You could, in fact, still have kept Bancks for the role he serves well as the captain.
No it wouldn't. Cull doesn't play Gaunce at center unless it's absolutely necessary. He prefers Gaunce on the wing with bums like Woods, Hamilton , and Darcy in the middle.
***see post #1037 above
There I corrected that for you.
Gaunce only plays center when Cull absolutely has to. He is on the wing when 4 other centers are available.
Cull could end up being his own and the Comets' worst enemy with his constant lineup juggling.
Graham is still injured.
Unless something happened I didn't hear about, Saucerman was available. That makes 7.
I was referring to a game post that stated 7 d men were dressed last night. The AHL listed Graham as dressed......
Took the Comets a couple of periods to get going but they really took over in the third. Helped that McKenna wasn't especially good.
Leighton - looked a lot smoother and more in control in this game. Had to make some clutch saves
Schenn - guy brings stability to the back end. Good at keeping people out from in front of the net and smart in his puck movement. Skating is poor but he knows how to cut down distance by keeping good positioning.
Sautner - played with an edge and supported the offense. Goal was a little flukey and weak but was an example of him keeping puck in the offensive zone
MacEwen - played a great deal and was probably the best at creating offensive chances. MacEwen, however, does represent a bit of problem for the Canucks in terms of where to play him. At his most effective he is playing like a top 6 center or winger. He is big, fast and skilled enough with the puck at this level to barge through and be a scorer. Yet there are glitches in his game which make you think he can never play that role in the NHL. So you are left thinking that maybe he can become a 3rd or 4th liner who can bring some scoring. Yet that does not seem his game. He doesn't seem that good at the kind of patterned hockey where you stick to a system (especially the checking system) that allows you to play good defensive hockey. Finding an NHL role for MacEwen is an issue.
Woods - playing his best hockey ever as Comet. Moved the puck much better in this game and used his speed to create a good forcheck
Gaunce - another good overall game. showed good stick work on his goal. Has very mature style of play for this level.
Kero - moving well and providing good puck support all over the ice. Has good defensive awareness.
Not so Good
Chatfield - looked dazed and confused on the first goal which he appeared to kick in his net and was badly beat wide on the second goal. Might be a scratch if everyone is there.
Lind - played well and again showed a good ability to hit the open man. Still gets knocked of his skates too easy and he needs to get stronger here.
LeBlanc - played steady and controlled game. Looks like he can help the team. Plays like this and he is in the top 6.
Pyatt - starting to look like he can help the team. Has good wheels and looking better around the net. However, not always noticeable in the play
Gaudette - can see the speed and shifty moves. However, prone to over-doing it at times and trying to do too much which puts him and the team in trouble at times. Still trying to learn how to use the talent he does have. In a way he shows the difference b/w a college and Canadian Junior League graduate. Junior players seem to have their systems down better and know how to play in a smaller rink. College players tend to think they have more space (like they did in college) and need to learn how to better play safe hockey.
Agree with pretty much everything. Great to see Leighton play well as he might just wind up being the starter for the rest of the season. I also think Woods has been pretty good for a bottom 6 player for a while now.
Wow! Based on last night's outing, the Flyers might have done us a favor. McKenna had a tough night. Leighton might have to be the answer long-term unless the Canucks can pick up somebody at the deadline.
The Marlies won their afternoon game. The pressure is back on the Comets (and Cleveland) to respond with wins this evening.
Utica down 2-0 after the 1st tonight. Breakaway goal in the first minute and then a 5v3 goal late in the period.
Comets down 0-2 yearly....an ill advised, undisciplined penalty by Bancks puts them down two men....and automatic goal for the Amerks. And Danlen is playing on the wing with Woods again as his center? Absolutely pointless.
Leighton is playing in the second of back-to-back's tonight, so management might agree with you about him being the answer long term. If Kulbakov sits again on Sunday there'll be little doubt.
MacEwen with the power wrister 2-1
Boucher bangs in a MacEwen rebound 2-2
