Bancks gets called on a cheap one, but the Comets have to kill one with only 5:34 left

3:11 Comets offsides.

How soon does Cull lift Demmer?

Huge cross net stop by Demko. Remeber that one if they should come back.

Right now the Comets have been unable to cross the Charlotte blue line since the PK ended.

It's tied with :53 to go.

Less than a minute and the Comets would get 2 out of 4 at least from the league's best team.

They did it!

OT coming up.

Lost in like 21 seconds Sunday. Hopefully a better outcome this time. Trouble is most teams have 5 or 6 pure skill guys with speed. Speed is the big problem for the Comets. Charlotte 6-1 in OT this season. Comets 0-2.

Utica Comets 4 Charlotte Checkers 3 OT

SOG:
Comets - 13 8 7 3 = 31
Checkers - 5 19 11 1 = 36

PP :
Comets - 0/3
Checkers - 0/4

Gaunce (7) from Brisebois (5) and Graham (8)
McEneny (3) from Gaunce (5) and MacEwen (11)
Boucher (15) from Jasek (9) and Kero (16)
OT
Archibald (8) from Gaunce (6)

3 point night for Gaunce!

Demko - 33/36

3 Stars:
1 - Darren Archibald (Utica Comets) 1G
2 - Jake Bean (Charlotte Checkers) 1G/2A
3 - Aleski Saarela (Charlotte Checkers) 1G

Gaunce got the shaft here. His 3 points and set up on the game winner outpoints Saarela's single goal.

Comets came out of Charlotte with 3 points against the AHL's #1 overall team. Gutsy effort from an extremely thin roster numbers wise. Out of town, out of state, halfway down the eastern seaboard with one additional forward and one additional D-man.

Nice win. Thought they played Checkers dead even in this game.

Liked

Gaunce - showing leadership with his play. Going along at near a point per game clip. Playing well both ways. Best he has looked offensively IMO at any time he has been in Utica. Line of Gaunce - Archibald and MacEwen were dominant at times. All played well

Boucher - made some poor plays and not burying his shot like earlier in the year, but he is still an important contributor to any success the team has.

McEneny - looked very good. Playing all the time and in every situation. I say the best player on the team right now. Makes the smart play with the puck all the time and defensively solid. He is an excellent passer. Probably better than Poo.

Brisebois - having his best period of play ever in Utica. Again has improved greatly in using body to screen people off around the net and get position along the boards. Made a nice pass on the first goal and was good on the PK. Has a fairly big frame and if he can add a few more pounds of muscle could more than hold his own in his end.

Demko - third goal was suspect but he made some huge saves late to give the Comets a chance to come back.

Jasek - makes very good passes. Sees the ice well and sorts out options quickly. Some dead periods in his play but he is having a pretty good first season at this level.

Did Not Like

Cameranesi - terrible in his end. His line with Gadjovich and Arseneau couldn't get the puck out and were on for two of the goals. Got mostly benched mid way thru the game.

Others

Lind - had one breakaway and nearly a few more. Just off side on some. Was much more in the play and showed better wheels. Keeps it up and he should start getting some points (and to put things in perspective Charlotte player Cliff Pu, who came out of Junior last year very highly rated, has 1 goal and 2 assists in 25 games on a talented team) Life is not easy on rookies in the AHL

Dirk - had some trouble late but is playing surprisely well most of the time.

Time to repeat this post since Stecher was injured last night. There are only two defensemen in Utica that are under NHL contracts. Nice depth planning there Jimbo.

Jimbo: "I'm going to be more involved in the medical side of things this year."

Looks like Dr. Jim solved everything. Hooray.

So what happens now?
Sautner (D)- Appears to be lost for the season.
Juolevi (D) - Lost for the season.
Chatfield (D) - Broken foot/ankle - still week to week. Not reported skating yet.
Hamilton (C) - Concussed since Canucks training camp.
Dahlen - Concussed 12/14. Traveled with the team to North Carolina. ?

We know the Comets are out 3 of their 8 regular D-men all under contract to the Canucks. Stecher was helped off the ice in Vancouver last night after taking a hit to the head.

Do the Canucks come looking for a fill-in like Brisebois or McEneny, who if they follow normal protocol won't play?

That would be 4 of the Comets top 8 leaving only one of Briesbois or McEneny, Sifers, Blujus(#7) and Graham (#8). The others currently on hand are ECHL Call-up Dirk and PTO Saucerman (scratched last night).

No matter how well we like to believe Dirk, Graham, and Saucerman are playing the bulk of the heavy lifting has been done by McEneny, Sifers, and Blujus with a littl help from Graham's wheels.

Let's not pretend that the difference between this team and the dismal position they were in 9 games ago hasn't been the result of the return of Demko. Cull isn't fooled either. Bachman is not getting games that an AHL #2 would normally get.

The current condition of the Comets D needs some serious help. The forwards are led by a group of hard working vets and a 2nd year man, who are all putting up most of the points. Jasek is chipping in and McEneny is starting to come to life on offense while Graham is picking up assists because he is skating the puck up the ice and feeding forwards who are finding ways to score.

7 games from the halfway mark. Players will need to be added and PTOs are the likely method. I don't count on Johnson to do a thing even though it would be the right thing to find a couple solid D-men to replace Sautner and Juolevi. other teams do get loans. Europe has guys available. Toronto got O'Reilly on a loan once and we know full well that's how they currently have Gagner. Maybe there is a D-man out there available by that method. Of course you would need a savy GM------NOPE.

Blujus should be signed to an NHL contract and recalled.

He’s easily the best defender on the farm and it’s madness he isn’t on an NHL deal.

Ryan Johnson used the word "months" when asked about how long Chatfield will be out last week.
