So, with the way last years format worked so well and was seemingly a bit more immune to flavor of the week status at training camp, I think we can take the same approach this year. For those that weren't around, basically just send a PM to me with your top 15 prospects, and I'll compile a list of our top 20 prospects based off of the results.

HM: LHD Brendan De Jong (NR)
6'5/192, 2017 6th round pick (#166 OA)

The hulking leftie defenseman is a throwback to an earlier era in terms of his abilities and his sheer stature. He improved his production a hair from the prior year going from 23 points in 72 to 25 in 68 and he took far fewer penalties in the process going from 72 minutes to 48. It's expected that he'll return to Portland for his overage season where he'll have the chance to see if he can improve his game enough to earn an ELC from the Canes.

lee_021218_nubu9_spts.jpg

HM: W Matt Filipe (T-20)
6'2/198, 2016 3rd round pick (#67 OA)

I'll readily admit that I'm higher than most on this prospect. While his production dropped a bit this past season he still brought the energy and physical play that he's known for on a Northeastern team that was one of the surprise contenders for the national championship last season. With all 3 of their big line turning pro (Saikura, Gaudette, Stevens) this upcoming season looks to be Matt's year to have a big chance to break out.

Eetu-Makiniemi-and-Nicolas-Roy.jpg

HM: G Eetu Makiniemi (NR)
6'3/176, 2017 4th round pick (#104 OA)

Since earning a clear starters workload for the Jokerit U-2os this past season Makiniemi has played well. With 35 of 43 starts and a stat line of 3.03GAA and a .916% save percentage he did not get too terribly much support from the team in front of him, but that's hardly the worst thing for a goalies development. Makiniemi has signed a two-way deal with Jokerit for this coming season so it remains to be seen which team he will be playing for next season.

HM: LHD Ville Rasanen (NR)
6'2/168, 2017 7th round pick (#197 OA)

The smooth skating Finn continues to develop as a defenseman taking the step up to playing in Liiga for a bit this past season. The stat line was a bit deceiving this past year as he took a step up in competition at the U-20 level, and his offensive vision is one of the things most impressing scouts about his game. With the team holding his rights for another 3 seasons it's conceivable that the Canes have every intention of letting him develop his game in Finland before giving him a shot at the North American game.

02_BLR_SWE_008_Standard.JPG

HM: LHD Jesper Sellgren (2018 pick)
5'11/170, 2018 6th round pick (#166 OA)

This is one of my dark horse prospects for us to really become something. While playing for a team that is in rebuild mode in Sweden's Allsvenskan, the 2nd time eligible really stepped up this past year earning a spot on the Sweden WJC team and earning rave reviews for his outstanding defensive play in the process. While he hasn't shown too terribly much in terms of offensive chops so far in his career he's drawn strong comparisons to fellow Modo product and long-time Atlantapeg stalwart Tobias Enstrom.

bishop_cha.jpg

#25: C Clark Bishop (NR)
6'0/194, 2014 5th round pick (#127 OA)

Known more as an excellent skater and a defensive force at the junior level than an offensive star, it took a bit for Bishop to get his pro career up and running strong. But a big increase in production and understanding of the pro game from year 1 to year 2 has him knocking on the door of being considered one of the primary options for a callup if the Canes need a forward for a defensive role. Though the competition for that slot is stiff to be sure.

Chin120117BC-BUHockey_Spt4.jpg

#24: C David Cotton (T-18)
6'3/201, 2015 6th round pick (#169 OA)

A long-shot project of a prospect when he was drafted he's done nothing but raise his stock since being selected, and his drop from 18th to 24th this past season is more a testament to how much other prospects have stepped up this year and the strength of some of our additions then it is his play. While BC was in a bit of a rebuilding phase last year, Cotton stepped up and was the #2 scorer on what's one of the premier programs in all of college hockey. Coming in to his junior season with a stronger team I'd expect to see his production tick up again. Already possessing an NHL size body, his skill set projects nicely as an all-around guy, though no real skillset of his really stands out either.

fd14bd805a2f3c2ea2e59c2f2cfec18d.jpg

#23: W Saku Maenalanen (2018 UFA)
6'4/185, 2013 5th round pick (#125 OA by NSH)

The former Preds prospect comes in with a lot of experience having been a standout with Karpat this past season and with some built-in chemistry having played with two of our best players in Aho (with Karpat) and being an absolute force of a line with Teravainen (Finland U-20s). His breakout year saw him just outside the top 10 in scoring in Liiga and putting up another 5+5 for Karpat on their way to another Liiga championship. While it's likely he starts the year in Charlotte it's not out of reason to think the big 24 year old winger may be able to take one of the open roster spots in camp and really show what he has at the NHL level this coming season.

HelvigCHLGOTWOHL.jpg

#22: G Jeremy Helvig (HM)
6'4/207, 2016 5th round pick (#134 OA)

The big netminder out of Kingston just wrapped up a strong junior career with a 2nd team OHL All-Star finish and a deep run in to the playoffs. Consistently one of the best goalies in his league from the year he was drafted on, Helvig was rewarded with a contract this offseason and is expected to get his pro career started in net for Florida of the ECHL.

CarrickOffseasonfull.jpg

#21: LHD Trevor Carrick (16)
6'2/185, 2012 4th round pick (#116 OA)

The veteran of all veteran Hurricanes prospects, Carrick has basically proven all he has to prove at the AHL level at this point and like with Cotton it's more a matter of the sheer numbers game that has him outside the top 20 this year. Still, if this offseason progresses as expected then expect him to be right in the thick of things possibly earning a full season with the Canes as the #7 dman, and the #4 option on the LH side.

20: RHD Michael Fora (2018 UFA)
6'2/214, undrafted free agent

One of the standouts at this past Olympics, Fora showed more then enough between his play with the Swiss national team and in the Swiss NLA to earn a shot at making the show after previously not being drafted during a stint with Kamloops of the WHL. While not necessarily expected to make the roster starting this season, possible roster moves could shake things loose and end up seeing the Swiss born defender make his NHL debut early next season.

tumblr_os29wl2aKf1sikbe7o1_500.jpg

#19: C Eetu Luostarinen (14)
6'3/179, 2017 2nd round pick (#42 OA)

While he didn't quite put up the oh so sexy stats of the past 2 Finnish 2nd round studs that the Canes have drafted, Eetu really picked up his game following being cut from the Finland WJC team, ending the season with 20 points in 55 games and 3 points in 6 playoff games as he worked his way up the lineup in KalPa. Considering just two years ago he was in the Jr. B SM-sarja level he is still tracking his way up nicely.

Callum_Booth_2518.jpg

#18: G Callum Booth (11)
6'4/192, 2015 4th round pick (#93 OA)

If anything the relative obscurity of having to work ones way up from the ECHL works against Callum in this years rankings, and in other ways the additions of some excellent prospects and others taking that next step in a big way works against him as well. Still, he had a very strong first season pro for Florida and made his debut in the AHL for a few games late in the season. It's expected that he'll be in the mix in Charlotte this coming season and could quickly find his way back up the rankings if he has another strong season in a higher profile league, considering how he's tracked since his time with Quebec don't bet against him.

IMG_9999-800x445.jpg

#17: RW/C Morgan Geekie (15)
6'2/179, 2017 3rd round pick (#67 OA)

Geekie had a huge draft year which led to him being drafted in the 3rd as an overager, this year he stepped it up a notch. While his regular season production was about the same as the previous year his post-season was at a record type pace with 17 goals (and 10 assists) in 14 games. Good enough to lead the WHL in goal scoring for the whole playoffs... in 12 fewer games then eventual champions Swift Current played. He's expected to compete for a roster spot with Charlotte this coming season.

cut.jpg

#16: C Jack Drury (2018 pick)
5'11/174, 2018 2nd round pick (#42 OA)

Drury, son of former NHLer Ted Drury and nephew of Chris Drury, really stepped up his game for Chicago this past year in the USHL and was the leading scoring first time draft eligible out of the league. Good for #4 overall in league scoring. Likely just as important, he plays that annoying in-your-face game that will translate easily to the NHL level should he keep developing. Will be playing his collegiate hockey at Harvard starting this coming season.

15: G Alex Nedeljkovic (T-18)
6'0/198 2014 2nd round pick (#37 OA)

Nedeljkovic bounced back rather nicely from a rough first year pro and especially came on strong in the late half of the season into the playoffs where he had excellent numbers: .903 and 2.55 in 49 regular season games improved to .917 and a 2.11 in 8 playoff games. Ned is one of the best stickhandlers of any prospect at the position and is a guy that could see some playing time as soon as this coming season should either of Mrazek or Darling falter, though one more year in the AHL certainly wouldn't be a bad thing for his development.

Mattheos_Action_White-1024x576.jpg

14: RW/C Stelio Mattheos (HM)
6'1/192 2017 3rd round pick (#73 OA)

The Canes took Mattheos in the 3rd last year banking on him stepping up after a significant amount of depth departed a strong Brandon team. That happened and then some, with Mattheos living up to his former #1 OA WHL draft pick status with a season of 90 points in 68 games. Invited to the Team Canada 40 man roster for the World Junior Showcase it seems likely that he'll be solidly in the mix for a spot on Canada's World Junior Championship team, though nothing is set in stone on that front as Canada typically has high roster turnover from year to year. Will return to Brandon for this coming season as he is not eligible for AHL play until 2019-20.

Wallmark_Review.jpg

13: C Lucas Wallmark (9)
6'0/176 2014 4th round pick (#97 OA)

Wallmark, coming off a strong rookie year with Charlotte had an even stronger year 2 and it's more a testament to the development of other prospects that were ranked behind him heading in to the previous season that he finds himself in the 13 slot this year. With 55 points in 45 games in the AHL and an 11 game stint in the NHL this past season he's at the top of many lists of most NHL-ready prospects in the AHL, even if many find his upside to not be as high as others that would be considered. Canes management apparently agrees with that as he was signed to a 2 year deal this offseason with the 2nd year being a one-way contract, and he'll likely be in the mix for the #4 center spot in camp this season.

Roy_Bio_1718.jpg

12: C Nicolas Roy (5)
6'4/207 2014 4th round pick (#96 OA)

Much like with Mattheos, Roy was a former #1 pick in his league and it took until their D+1 to show exactly why. His offensive and defensive game scream future NHLer, he thinks the game well, has a great frame, in fact he's nearly the total package. In fact the only aspect to his game that needs work before he's at the NHL level is his skating, but in a league based off of speed that's a huge deal. And while he had a solid if unspectacular rookie season with the Checkers his skating didn't seem to take that next step as a prospect this year to this point. It will be interesting to see if he can keep working on it this coming season and take the next step in his skating game, or if he can be a strong enough player in every other aspect to make it to the NHL. Might be in consideration for that #4 center spot along with Wallmark heading in to training camp this year.

martin-hurricanes-1024x576.jpg

11: D Luke Martin (8)
6'4/216 2017 2nd round pick (#52 OA)

If there's any team in the league that seems to have this whole mid-round NCAA defenseman thing down right now it's the Canes. Martin looks and plays exactly like a bigger Brett Pesce. While his offense didn't take that next step this past year and he missed out on the US WJC team, he plays that solid defensive game with a nice outlet pass that makes him seem like yet another future NHL regular from the clone army. Expect maybe one more season of NCAA play before the Canes sign him to an ELC.

10: RW Julien Gauthier (4)
6'4/225, 2016 1st round pick (#21 OA)

The workout machine didn't exactly have the best of rookie seasons in the AHL and the resulting fall in the rankings was expected. But he also showed a lot of promise as well, with a very strong back half of the season especially following Zykov being called up to the Canes and getting more prime offensive ice time as a result. Don't be surprised if he has a strong year 2 in the AHL and possibly earns a callup as with Zykov likely sticking with the Canes and the departure of Miller that's 2 slots in the top 6 for the Checkers that are wide open for Goat to develop in to.

cut.jpg

9: RHD Roland McKeown (10)
6'1/194 2014 2nd round pick (#50 OA by LA - Acquired in Andrej Sekera trade)

Interestingly piece 2 of the return for Sekera back in 2015 goes one slot higher than piece 1 - the first round pick which ended up being Julien Gauthier. McKeown is about as safe a bet as you can get at this point and the only question is "what's his upside?". He had 23 points in 65 games with Charlotte after a bit of a disappointing first year, and earned 2 separate looks with the big club this past season totaling 10 games and getting 3 assists and a plus 3 rating for his trouble. While it's expected that he starts the season in Charlotte as of right now, that can change very easily if a Justin Faulk trade materializes as the club will be looking for a #7 defenseman and McKeown is as safe a bet for that as it gets.

cut.png

8: C/W Janne Kuokkanen (6)
6'1/187 2016 2nd round pick (#43 OA)

What Kuokkanen did while with London in his first year of North American play was impressive, and he carried that over the next year while as a 19 year old putting up 40 points in 60 games in Charlotte and getting his first 4 game look in the NHL, though he didn't have the strongest WJC with Finland. His skill is undeniable as he looks to be yet another impressive cog in the Karpat-Carolina pipeline, and it will be interesting to see how he improves in the AHL as a 20 year old this coming season and how he finds ways for his skill set to translate over to the NHL game.

Saarela_Bio_1718.jpg

7: LW/C Aleksi Saarela (7)
5'11/198 2015 3rd round pick (#89 OA by NYR - Acquired in Eric Staal trade)

Saarela continues to show what he has as a prospect, having a strong rookie season with 43 points in 69 games while continuing to be a strong two-way player after an extremely impressive 9 game stint with Charlotte to end the 16-17 season. The question right now is when will he get his shot and how will he fare, as he continues to impress at the AHL level but has yet to see a callup to the Canes.

cut.png

6: W Warren Foegele (13)
6'2/190 2014 3rd round pick (#67 OA)

They call him McLovin. While Foegele was impressive, but not truly dominant, in juniors his game took the next step in his first year pro and then some. 46 points (28 goals) in 73 games as a rookie with Charlotte, the more impressive fact is that he did absolutely NONE of his scoring on the powerplay. In fact he led the entire AHL in even strength + shorthanded scoring. With speed to burn it seems his game has transferred over even better to the pro game then it did to juniors. He has a good chance at making the roster out of camp if the team still finds itself in need of a 4th line forward/PK specialist.

5: RHD Adam Fox (2018 trade acquisition)
5'11/181 2016 3rd round pick (#66 OA by CAL - Acquired in Hanifin/Lindholm trade)

The addition of Fox is one of the more underrated aspects of arguably the biggest player for player trade the Canes have made since Ozolinsh for Hedican and K Ads. He's been dominant in the NCAA ranks to date and has been a strong defenseman for the US WJC team in both of his appearances to date. About the only thing he's lacking is size, every other aspect of his game: his smarts, his skating, his shot, his passing is NHL ready. Don't be surprised to see him signed at the end of the season and stick with the big team going forward.

cut.png

4: LW Valentin Zykov (12)
6'1/225 2013 2nd round pick (#37 OA by LA - Acquired in Kris Versteeg trade)

Zykov has had a meteoric rise since a rough first season in LA's system. Playing like a bull in a china shop he has all the makings of a finisher and ended up leading the AHL in goal scoring as a 22 year old last season with 33 in 63 games, and his 10 game stint with the Canes was quite the impressive showing with 7 points in 10 games. While he's not the strongest skater that aspect of his game is a bit underrated and he constantly finds himself in the right position to bury the puck at all levels. He'll be expected to start the season in the NHL this coming season and should Skinner be traded or Aho make the transition to center he's likely to get a shot at the top 9 if not the top 6 after he showed great chemistry with Aho and Turbo last year.

jake_bean_hurricanes_front.jpg

3: LHD Jake Bean (3)
6'1/173 2016 1st round pick (#13 OA)

A smooth skating offensive defenseman who's been slow-played in his development by the Canes, he and Adam Fox put on an absolute show at the prospects development camp. And as Jake showed at the camp, he really focused on his development on the defensive side of the puck the past 2 years, and is going to start the season in the AHL this year though don't be surprised if he gets a few looks over the course of the season as injuries dictate. Bean's also a weapon on the PP and very well may develop in to the type of PP QB that the team has been missing since Pitkanen's injury.

cut.png

2: C Martin Necas (2) - 2 first place votes
6'2/179 2017 1st round pick (#12 OA)

Perhaps no prospect from the 2017 draft has seen his profile rise so much from draft day last season to today, Necas has risen to the point where he's widely considered a top 10 prospect in the entire league and it's only the presence of an elite talent drafted at #2 this year that keeps him from the top spot for us. He started getting noticed around the league in the WJC and his profile only rose from there with how he did in the Czech league and in the World Championships. He's still growing (gained an inch and 10 lbs from draft time in 2017) has a high end skillset and elite speed. He also is responsible in the defensive zone and would lead rushes out of his own zone on the fly repeatedly during the WJC and the World Championships. For a team that's been looking for a #1 C following the struggles that Eric Staal had after his knee injury, Necas is a solid bet to be exactly that and is likely to figure in to the Calder Trophy conversation this coming season.

cut.jpg

1: RW Andrei Svechnikov (2018 draft) - 20 first place votes
6'2/187 2018 1st round pick (#2 OA)

Andrei's a game changer for this franchise, plain and simple. Winning the #2 pick in the draft this year the Canes won the right to select a guy that rates as one of the best scorers in recent OHL history. 40 goals in 44 games, and better even strength goal production rate than names such as Hall, Stamkos, Tavares, etc. Also of note is that scouts rave about this guys two-way ability, and he plays with an edge to his game that leads him to be considered more of a power winger then a pure sniper. Between he and Necas, who spent a significant amount of time together at development camp, this past year has likely seen the biggest jump for the Canes future up front that the team has ever possibly seen. Much like with Necas, expect Andrei to be right in the thick of things when it comes to the Calder picture this coming season.

Done. This was harder than past years. That's IMO a good thing.

I ranked no goalies because I found it hard to rank them with skaters, but also because I don't really feel any of the ones toward the top of the system are future NHL players and the bottom of the system are wildcards; only perhaps Nedeljkovic merited a ranking.
