The Good:
We took advantage of a weak conference to pad our point totals. Showed up more frequently. If our roster is healthy, we have actual NHL players in the lineup. Shots for climbed into the top 20 from it's semi-permanent spot in the bottom two or three (thanks Buffalo and NJD!). Shots allowed were almost down to top ten (missed by 0.01!), and goals against was top five! Managed to improve to "pretender" status and were playing somewhat meaningful games in the last weeks!

The bad:
While we beat up on the weak teams like we should, we were still out-hustled, out-muscled, and frequently out-classed. Laid an egg down the stretch against weak teams because they repeatedly couldn't show up for "the most important game of the season". "Leadership" core is questionable. Coaching decisions are still an enigma

The Ugly:
Injuries. Egad! Also, team the franchise still needs centers and we gave away two near -ppg centers who were under 25 one of whom wanted out, and the other we publicly called a bust because we have a very narrow mould of player we will utilize. Oops. No one except Crouse took a step forward. Developmental woes. We're still broke and still crashing on Glendale's sofa until we find our own place. Might get some wanderlust soon.

There has been some solid on-ice progress, but our fundamental issues have not much improved. It's hard to see a pathway for sustained success as a shallow-pocket team if we don't address our underlying issues.

Solid breakdown. I am proud of our team but also wonder if I would feel the same had our division (basically the West in general) hadn't experienced such an anomaly of a season.

Did we look good just because everyone else looked bad?

The four Pacific teams below us (VAN, ANA, EDM, LAK) had a combined 136 Wins, 192 Losses. We were 11-5-1 against them. That's 23 points from bottom feeders. When we include Chicago and Minnesota, they are a combined 209 wins with 283 losses. We are 15-7-1 against the bottom feeders below us.

So yeah, the weak West helps us look good in comparison.

We were actually 12-12-3 against playoff teams in the West. Outscored 86-73. We were 6-9-1 against the stronger Eastern Conference playoff teams and outscored 41-37.

The good news is that they were able to take advantage, going .500 against West playoff teams and rolling over the weak ones. Beating teams we should beat is still a step forward. Especially with how thin we were on the injury front.

PK was fantastic, @Jormungandr

This team would be slaughtered in the playoffs. Get Chayka sober before July please! We aren't built well. We're very light in the pants in addition to being thin on talent. When the officials swallow their whistles, we get creamed. Has Chayka ever watched any playoff hockey?

Had we made it, I think we could have had a chance vs. SJ. I didn't like our odds at all vs. CGY.

Calgary outscored us 18-6 over the season. We were 1-3 against them. They manhandled us.

We were 2-1-1 against SJ. 14-14 GF-GA.

San Jose chokes frequently. Calgary has questionable goaltending. I'd agree those would have been our best chances.

  • Our GAA came down by almost 1/2 a goal.
  • Kuemper was fantastic
  • Our team D and back end is solid
  • Injuries likely hurt us
  • Keller/Chych/DVO/Fischer were disappointments
  • We can't score ^
We need to keep our team D and goal tending at this level and somehow improve scoring.

Morgan’s list of bangs and boo boos the team played through (in addition to Grabner’s eye.):

  • Chayka said Stepan returned after three and a half weeks and played through a torn MCL.
  • Ekman-Larsson played through a high-ankle sprain in addition to his knee injury. He was due for an MRI to make sure everything is OK with the knee, but he said it feels fine.
  • Schmaltz’s injury was to his meniscus. He said Monday he hopes to be close to 100 percent in three to four weeks.
  • Raanta was scheduled for a medical check-up on Monday but Chayka said his rehab has gone well.
  • In addition to the eye injury — one that resulted in a scratched cornea and stitches above his eye — Kuemper said he also played through a knee injury.
