Ostap Safin is the last prospect standing with 1 game to go at the Memorial Cup.

From the last thread:

Safin the broken outlasted Bouchard, McLeod and Samorukov while doing absolutely nothing all playoffs. Watch him score the Mem cup winner for the throne.

Why a Finnish team? Safin is a Czech and was developed in the Czech system even playing 8 games in the top Czech league before coming to the Q last season. I think sending him back home for a year or two might be a good option for him to try to rediscover his game. He's not looking healthy or like the same player that we drafted. He is normally a fast skater with great hands and a wicked (albeit sometimes inaccurate) shot, and right now he's not showing any of those attributes.

I like the Finnish teams as a know quantity for player development that is a bit less competitive than SHL or AHL but well above the ECHL. I would say Czech Extraliga is a definite step below Finnish Liiga because most of the best Czech players end up in the better paying leagues so if he could catch on with a Finn team it is a better development path. You are right about the way he looks. If its not a correctable medical thing he is going nowhere. Once the season is over maybe they will be more forthcoming about his situation. A 19 year old can have an off year statistically but the skills don't just disappear.

The hip injury set him back in a big way.

You have to wonder if the injury was a lot worse than just a hip flexor. Missing so much time then being ineffective when he did come back suggests that he may need surgery. Hope the Mooseheads didn't screw up his diagnosis and just think rest was the answer.

I think its bad, really bad. He cant even skate anymore. At camp 2 years ago, I really liked him. I went to see him on a terrible Saint John team in Halifax and he stood out. Now? Terrible

He would be a waste of a contract slot IMO.

2 years ago he had 3 points in 12 games in the AHL, and 33 points in 44 games in the ECHL.

Looks like he had a good year in Germany and at the WCs.

Malone, Russell and Callahan are UFAs, so wouldn't be the worst thing to sign him, send him to Bako and see what happens.

Oddly he played with former oiler greats, Ryan Jones, Steve Pinizzotto and Corey Potter.

Translation: Oliver Rodrigue is rumored to be acquired by the Moncton Wildcats.

This is great news for Rodrigue as Moncton should be one of the powerhouse teams in the Q next year. He should get the bulk of the starts and play deep into the playoffs and maybe even a Memorial Cup appearance.
