Well there are reasons why he ended up at that rank in the draft, he can't simply be very good across the board on top of having great stats. Good edges, but he lacks top speed. Considering this is a 5th rounder, this is a solid selection to me, but I doubt his ability to translate his game at that at the next level with limited time and space considering his lack of size and separation speed. Maybe he could make a career out of being a PP specialist by generating plays along the wall with his high-end IQ.

I think we're just debating on semantics here.

If "great" skating meant something in the lines of Kupari, Ylonen, Mete, etc. meaning the elite group of skaters in their drafts, then no, he's not that. But, he is one of the better skater with great mechanics and excellent acceleration. What he lacks in power, he might gain through more work and strength gains, much like Point.

Unlike Point though, he's not good across the board however. He could have had this same skating, but better scoring instincts, more strength, more involvement/compete, better board battles, etc and likely just one of those traits would've been enough for him top get into the top 3 rounds, not just the high end top speed per say. It's not like Kovalenko who really did lack that separation speed to be picked higher. So, I'm guessing NHL scouts saw a pretty small player, who's not involved enough physically/relatively easy to push off (big no-no for them, as seen by so many examples over the years), who's not a scorer and while has good skating, doesn't set himself apart... "small, weak, playmaking -mid/late round", that would be my guess. I mean, some of them didn't have SDA for those reasons on their list.

I like the upside quite a bit for where he was picked. I'd have been happy with him with one of our seconds, so I can't complain.

Fonstad is a decently skilled 2 way foward with high compete level that never take a shift off, while I think he has limited upside, thats exactly the type of player the Habs have been drafting all day long, none stop motor, good hockey sense, high % plays, decent speed...

he looked very skilled in the playoffs, scored some nice goals so he at least appears to have some hands on him. Was one of the best players in the series at least. Never saw him before that and wasn't focused on him so I'll have a better feel for him next year.

Indeed, he has quick hands, he is a little poison to face out there... I would compare him to Hudon with a bit more speed to his game and higher motor..

How many points do you think he will score? I'm thinking around 90.

I'm thinking around 90 too. Depends who he plays with. Wondering if PA brings in some new overagers. Their 20 year olds next season are Meger, McDonald, Montgomery, and Budik. I assume they only keep McDonald and I don't know if Budik's going to the AHL or what's going on there.

Yeah not to sound like a dick but with all the drat momentum and all your hype if he doesnt at least reach 90 next year it will be a bit of a letdown lol lucky for us he's probably capable of better

He is basically Gallagher with better playmaking. I would expect 90 from him. Never takes a shift off. Like I said though it also depends who he plays with. PA isn't that good of a team but they do have Kaiden Guhle and Ozzy Wiesblatt coming in. Wiesblatt looks like he's gonna be a damn good goal scorer.

In other news, I'm pleased to announce I successfully passed the t-shirt without incident.

A lot of players don't see progression in their d+1 season. Scoring 90pts at center would be amazing for a late round prospect.

Just got done watching a game from 10-25-17 vs Walford's team. Fonstad had 1g, played a solid game and had some good looks on the PP as watching him now made me think a little bit of Hudon (as was pointed out earlier on in this thread). He certainly looked better this time then when I saw him at the U-18's. Will be very interesting to see how much he can progress as long as he gets stronger especially lower body. He looks to be very skilled and smart, great qualities to have.

Walford wasn't bad, he was on the ice for Fonstad's goal but it wasn't really his fault as his partner had Fonstad but missed the rebound that went to Fonstad and he was able to quickly backhand it over the goalie (who let in a few questionable ones or they likely would have won). Walford could stand to get a bit quicker and work on his offensive game but he did have several nice passes.

on a side note every time I see Flames pick Matthew Phillips he's the best player on the ice.
