Right, but you guys aren't considering that it's 99% likely he goes back to junior, which in that case he doesn't see a dime of his contract until he starts his first pro season.

Don't 'Russian factor' the poor kid.

I believe he gets the signing bonus when the contract slides.

And you asked why he would go back. Belonging to a top KHL team that throws money around would be a pretty good reason. It's the same team that lured Nichushkin back and threw enough money at Kirill Kaprizov to keep him from coming over to Minnesota. Probably a good idea to get him locked up before his agent starts getting calls.

It also guarantees him 3 years of pay at what ever the minor league salary portion of the contract is, plus the signing bonus.

The Russian factor is real. Probably helped in him getting a contract this quick.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure they get the signing bonus each year. So it's not a bad deal for both sides, as it probably gives the kid $92.5K/year the next two years while he plays junior and that $185K comes off of his total cap hit in the future years (~60K savings/year) should he make the NHL prior to the end of his entry level.

Yeah Russian Factor is probably real. Although its a catch 22 situation. If CKSA Moscow (or whichever KHL team) is intending to try and steal Samorukov back to the KHL (hence the reason we signed him to an ELC this quickly). Then thats an indication they think hes really good and would bode well for the future of this 3rd round pick. If there was no Russian factor then we probably dont get him at 84 (rated in 60s pre draft, could be higher if he had no Russian factor at all), so would have to spend a 2nd round pick on him. For alot of Russians such as Kaprizov/Kucherov/ trio of russian goalie prospects etc, they fall a bit due to that Russian factor

So the catch 22 is that you are able to get a good Russian prospect in a later round, but then because they are good prospects, have to deal with KHL factor

After seeing Kaprizov and Sorokin sign 3 year KHL deals, maybe its better to offer this guy a ELC to avoid that. Have him under club protection for next 5 years (2 CHL years + 3 pro years). Risk burning an ELC on a future Gernat, but upside is that if he turns out, you have a guarantee hes not heading back to KHL at age 20-23 to get big money

And even that risk is small as if he doesn't work out in NA, I believe he can still be loaned to KHL or mutually agreed contract termination.

Thanks for the highlight package, I really like his vision and decision making; although this is a snap shot of the things he does well. How is he away from the puck, positioning and puck retrieval?

I think he gets his signing bonus! For a kid his age that's like winning the lottery. :)

(Just noticed that I replied to a 700 year old post...Sorry!)

Based on the youtube highlight and his performance in the AHL, he looks like a quality 2-way D prospect.

Lowe - Tweener
Jones - 2-way D
Lagesson - Mobile shutdown D
Samorukov - 2-way D

Mantha - Likely tweener, especially after eye troubles.
Bear - Offensive D
Berglund - 2-way D

Can't speak too much about the Swedish D prospect we signed to acquire his rights, Marino and Kemp. We have a nice list of depth D prospects, hopefully we can add an impact D prospect via the draft. Hold onto Klef/Nurse/Larsson, grab one of Bouchard/Dobson/Boqvist/Hughes, solidify that young top 4 D core and hope that one of those depth D really surprises us and becomes more than a 3rd pairing player.
