Weird. I can't remember the last time a player was drafted out of high school and didn't attend college so the team relinquished his rights.

A quick HockeyDB look sees that he only played 18 games this past season. I wonder if it's an injury situation, or maybe just a guy who doesn't want to play hockey anymore. I remember there was an Oiler prospect whom they either drafted or signed who just up and decided the following year that he didn't want to play hockey anymore.

Here's Brock Otten on the OHL prospects

As for the rest, I'm not entirely sure. I'm pretty sure Budiak, Hagel and Chizen go back into the draft. Soy, I think, might be too old for the draft as he was drafted as a 19-year-old. Elgestal is an UFA now while Piccinich is signed to an AHL deal with the Marlies. The rest...not so sure.

He had originally committed to attending Nebraska-Omaha for the 2017-18 season, but changed his mind and played another year in the USHL. Then he was injured in December and missed the remainder of the USHL season.

The fact that he deferred his commitment a year in the first place is unusual.

Curious to hear the precise details since San Jose is not allowed to sign him at this time. The window to sign European draft related UFA’s for next season closed on June 1st. Shouldn’t be able eligible to sign him until July 1st now.

24 year old, never NHL drafted, euro contract expired,
you seem to follow these rules,
but i dont understand why there would be any restrictions on signing such an player, unencumbered by NHL or prior team connections

I’m not certain what the reasoning behind the June 1st cutoff is. I would note it applies to unsigned draft picks as well.

The crux of the rule is that teams can only sign players to contracts which go into effect during the current season. That season starts on July 1st. Which is why players like Kovalchuk and Koskinen can’t be signed until July 1st, even though they are unencumbered UFA’s.

The CBA permits three exceptions to this rule:

A) Contract extensions can be signed up to a year before they go into effect.

B) Unsigned draft picks can sign for the next season between March 1st and June 1st.

C) Draft related free agents can sign for next season between March 1st and June 1st. Suomela falls into this category.

"Draft related" meaning undrafted?
that is why NYR could sign Lindquist and Meskanen in May, but couldn't today?

given these guys (maybe not meskanen) are a few years past draft eligibility, i didn't expect any restrictions

thanks

Yup. Although draft-related UFA could also include players who were drafted but whose draft rights have expired. In general it covers players who are eligible to sign as UFA's and have never been signed to an NHL contract before.

Players who have been on NHL contracts before--like Koskinen--don't fall under that exception category, so can't be signed early.

Previously accepted an invitation to Montreal's cap but since reneged to sign a deal with Boston. I'm curious to see if it's an NHL deal or an AHL one.

He says 1-year AHL contract in the following tweet.

Hopefully he has a great data plan because he's still breaking QMJHL news from Texas...

Thanks, obviously missed that somehow!

Sounds like he might still be meeting with Boston/more likely going to their development camp now though, or something

"he took an early flight this morning for Boston"
