Yep, guess so. I'll welcome it. Given the struggles this year, the earlier these young guns can get experience, the better.
If you keep it in the context of comparing the NCAA guys to their chl peers, burning an elc year pretty much keeps them on par with their chl brethren.

Adam Gaudette was a 2015 pick with a late bday. If he had gone to the chl he could have played in the ahl last season. If he didn’t get many nhl games his contract would have slide and this year would have been year 1 of his elc.

Can anyone confirm what's the status of these players regarding the expansion draft in 2020? I've read conflicting reports. Some say this season counts as their first pro year, some say it doesn't.
Anyone who is currently 20 or older, signs and burns a year of their contract this season? They will need to be protected or exposed. So that is Sikura, Gaudette, Stevens, etc.

Casey Mittelstadt burns the first year of his ELC this year, but he will remain exempt from the expansion draft. The reason is that the CBA deems him a 19 year old this season, so it doesn't count as a pro year for him. However, his contract isn't eligible to slide because the CBA also deems him a 20 year old when he signed the contract. It's an unusual occurrence.

Players who have this year of their contract "slide"? They are exempt of a potential 2020 expansion draft.

Players who are signing ELC's that start in July, but go to the AHL on PTO's? They would be exempt.
