This one was played Thursday night in Ochapawace. The only detail comes from the Regina tweet. Their goals came from King, Frei, Langford and Fowlie. So Felines beat Canines in the opening salvo of this rivalry.

No details are available anywhere on this one either. The tournament wraps up on Saturday with the Bisons facing Bedrock U. If Calgary wins the game, they win the tournament. If the Bisons win, all 4 teams will be 1-1.

The tweets tell us that the Hørny Ønes led 3-0 after the first period and scoring was:
- Merkley (PP) (Maltby,Valentino)
- Valentino (Merkley)
- Wardley (M.Maxwell, Clowes)
- M.Maxwell (Valentino)
- Valentino (Orban, Hughson)

Nice to see the Hørny Ønes waltz into Nerdville and whip the Urban Cowboys. The faux westerners from UWO will always try in vain to act non-eastern. But really they all look like this:

I was able to watch a lot of this one on CanadaWest.tv, which was nice. Quite a good broadcast. The T-irds were being held to a 3-3 draw entering the 3rd period and then exploded with 5 unanswered goals. Each side will now play Holy Trinity to finish the Captains' Cup tournament.

Once again, no details anywhere. The win for the Dinos leaves the tournament standings like this:
Calgary 2-0
Regina 1-1
Saskatchewan 1-1
Manitoba 0-2

The Bisons have to be concerned about giving up 11 goals on the weekend. However, without access to summaries/boxscores it is hard to gauge just what the games were like.

Next weekend the Herd has their only home action of the pre-season against Regina Friday night at Seven Oaks and Saturday afternoon on campus.

Preview: Sept 22-23: Regina at Bisons

The whole CW is set to hit the ice this weekend for the first time in pre-season. The slate includes two inter-conference series and the Brick Invitational Tournament. The team rosters are not yet uploaded to the CW stats pages. Here's the outlook.

There are no preview stories posted as yet. The Bisons do have their roster page up for this season, but Regina does not. Nor does the CW stats page.

This series will be the Bisons' only home action in pre-season. Next weekend they travel down to UND before opening the season at home against UBC on October 7th.

The top four teams in the CW from a year ago hook up in annual Brick Invitational in Edmontown, with one game in the Town of Bedrock. MRU has yet to hit the ice. The rest have played with mixed results. Bedrock U split with Lethbridge and the Banjo Mutts lost to the Banjo Cats. The Evil Monkeys played two ACAC teams. I suspect that when the season starts these teams will look pretty good.

The Hørny Ønes delve into the ACAC for an opponent. Both Friday and Saturday games will be played in Lethbridge. They split with the Dinos and then went east to split with Western Ontario. I am interested to see if they could be a playoff team at long last. The sort of blew it last year in losing out to UBC at the wire.

For the second year in a row a team from the OUA has made a pre-season jaunt to Beautiful British California for a series. Games go Friday and Saturday. The Queens have started with a loss to RMC whilst the T-irds dusted off the SFU Clown. Queens qualified for the U-Cup last year. Unlike UBC's games against The Clown and Holy Trinity, this series will not be on CanadaWest.tv.

A few new links have popped up. MRU and Sask have uploaded their 2017-18 roster pages. That leaves Alberta, Lethbridge, Regina, and UBC stuck in 2016-17. However, Alberta has a preview story of their Brick Invitational and UBC has a game story of their win over The Clown.

I missed the first period but based on what I saw, here was the alignment:

MANITOBA

Goal
35 Spriggs (34 Sydora)

Defence
25 Skrudema - 4 Bresciani
2 Henry - 3 Christensen
9 Hunter - 16 Heinrich

Forwards
14 Nault - 27 Franko - 18 St. Croix
12 Zajac - 13 Laurencelle - 26 Lisoway
24 Augert - 22 B Bowles - 8 Bilton
15 S Bowles - 21 Brooks - 11 Sharonov

REGINA

Goal
3 Holtby - 35 Herringer

Defence
7 King- 28 Peel
25 Nagel - 8 Bourhis
2 Bear - 5 Burns

Forwards
32 Zborosky - 14 McNulty - 27 Fowlie
23 Magnus - 12 Stevely - 15 Hansen
22 Sparrow - 16 McPhee - 20 Duppereault
19 Marr - 13 Frei - 21 Langford

There was a fight between Brett Brooks and Corwin Stevely of the Cougars, so after that lines were shuffled.

Bison goals were scored by Zach Franko (with two) and Nick Zajac. Byron Spriggs went the distance in goal. For Regina, their second goal was by Zak Zborosky. They split the goaltending between Brandon Holtby and Michael Herringer.

This was the Thursday night opener of the Brick Invitational. That Calgary link has no evident unique URL, so might disappear when they play their next game.

Cain Franson and Chris Collins each scored twice for Bedrock U. Mitchell Lipon replied with two goals for the Bluegars. The goaltending was not stellar. Cam Lanigan stopped 20 of 27 for MRU and Jordan Papiny stopped 9 of 13 for Bedrock. The game was tied 3-3 entering the 3rd period.

A 3-goal outburst in the 2nd period paced the Monkeys to this victory. Jason Fram scored twice for the winners. Jordon Cooke stopped 35 of 39 for the Mutts. The goaltending duties were split by the Monkeys, with Brendan Burke stopping 13 of 14 and Kenny Cameron stopping 9 of 10.

First, here's how they lined up in this Saturday matinee rematch:

MANITOBA

Goal
34 Sydora (35 Spriggs)

Defence
2 Henry - 3 Christensen
9 Hunter - 4 Bresciani
16 Heinrich - 25 Skrudema
11 Sharonov

Forwards
27 Franko - 14 Nault - 18 St. Croix
24 Augert - 13 Laurencelle - 26 Lisoway
20 Keane - 22 B Bowles - 19 Spencer
17 Callis - 23 Schreyer - 8 Bilton

Scratches
1 Paulic (G) - 10 Dudar - 12 Zajac
15 S Bowles - 21 Brooks - 28 Stovin
29 Wasylak

REGINA

Goal
35 Herringer (3 Holtby)

Defence
2 Bear - 5 Burns
25 Nagel - 8 Bourhis
7 King - 4 Schacher

Forwards
32 Zborosky - 14 McNulty - 27 Fowlie
19 Marr - 16 McPhee - 21 Langford
23 Magnus - 15 Hansen - 17 Kosloski
20 Duppereault - 13 Frei - 22 Sparrow

Scratches
10 Coleshaw - 11 Cardiff - 12 Stevely
18 Luhning - 29 Predinchuk - 31 MacAuley

Each team has a boxscore link which has an error. The 2nd and 3rd Regina goals were on the powerplay. Those goes came within a period where the Bisons were assessed four interference goals, which was quite bizarre. On the night, the shots were 29-27 in favour of the Bisons. I saw Sydora play a full game for the first time. He's a #3 goalie. So far, I have not seen that last year's #2 (Justin Paulic) has made an appearance.

The Kittens are not a strong team, but they are better this year. They are now 2-2-0 in pre-season. They won't go .500 in the regular season, and will likely finish last, but they are on the right track.

Still nothing on Laurentian at Nipissing. It should show up (eventually) here:

This one was played on Wednesday, September 27th. It seems the Bluegars have taken a step back this year, as the recruiting list would imply. Jordan Papirny stopped 13 of 14 to get the win for Bedrock U. Colin Cooper stopped 25 of 28 for MRU before an empty-netter put it away. MRU finishes the pre-season at 1-2-0.

The good thing about games against NCAA teams is that there are plenty of links to information, as good or better than regular season CW games. The Bisons have not posted a story since before their trip to the U.K.

It has been a while since the Evil Monkeys took a trip south on this NCAA weekend. They are off to a good start and will face two highly rated teams on their trip.

This tour used to be the domain of the Bedrock Dinos, but then it went to the Bluegars and now the Hørny Ønes. Although their opponents are all in Colorado, they play in three different leagues. This will be a tough tour for Lethbridge with three games in three days.

OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARD

Friday, September 29, 2017

The Bisons had the night off. In fact, there were relatively few games on Friday night due to the NCAA weekend for most teams. For some reason the teams stateside have a preference for Saturday/Sunday games. Just one CW team was in action, there were two OUA games, and a host of college level games.

The Bisons were blown out in the 2nd period, during which they were outscored 4-1. Remi Laurencelle opened the scoring, and Calvin Spencer scored in the 2nd period to make it 3-2. After Spencer's goal, UND had their onslaught to make it 6-2. The 3rd period was scoreless. Byron Spriggs went the distance in goal, stopping 29 of 35 shots.

The Bisons wrap up the pre-season with a 4-4-1 record. Things started strong in the UK, but fizzled in North America. Anyhow, things start for real next weekend when the Herd hosts UBC Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.

The rest of the CW teams which headed south had results consistent with their 2016-17 standings. Defending champion Alberta won, 7th place Lethbridge had a 3-goal loss, and last place Regina got skunked.

The Evil Monkeys are rolling through the pre-season. They are now 5-0-0. Although Regina and Lethbridge both missed the playoffs last year, they have both split their games against CIS teams so far. So how much of a co-relation will there be between pre-season and regular season results?

This series will be in the unusual Saturday-Sunday format. The rest of the CW goes on the usual Friday-Saturday basis.

The stats links have nothing downloaded for the 2017-18 season. No schedules, rosters, etc. I emailed the CW to see what's up.

The CW coaches' poll was released this week. The results are:

T1. Alberta & Saskatchewan / 46 (4)
3. Calgary / 37
4. UBC / 24
5. *Manitoba / 23
6. Mount Royal / 23
7. Lethbridge / 18
8. Regina / 7

NOTES: First-place vote worth 7 pts., second-place worth 6 pts. etc. / *Awarded higher position based on greater number of higher placed votes.

Without league-wide roster updates I have been unable to look over all of the teams. I do not see UBC as improved, and they were 6th last year. In general, all teams other than MRU had a recruiting class sufficient to at least replace their graduating players.

The Bisons announced that Brett Stovin will be the captain, and the alternates will be defencemen Adam Henry and Channing Bresciani and forwards Michael St. Croix and Nick Zajac.

Last year these teams had close games, two wins each and the most one-sided was a 4-2 win by the Bisons. So I expect to see some good hockey this weekend.

Both games will be available at CanadaWest.tv. There is a charge, so check the links. They have one free game each weekend. This weekend it is men's soccer between Thompson Rivers and Fraser Valley. Don't complain. It's free.

This, and the rest of the opening schedule, are home-and-home Friday-Saturday series between provicial rivals. The Banjo Cats beat the Banjo Mutts and the Bisons in pre-season, going 2-2-0 against CW teams. They were then blitzed twice in the States by 8-0 margins. Have they already crashed to Earth? Meanwhile, the Mutts were only 1-3-0 in pre-season. On paper, they should be even stronger than the 1st place team and conference and national runners-up they were a year ago.

I don't remember the last time a team in the CW played just 3 pre-season games. But that's what the Bluegars did this year. The Monkeys had a good pre-season, ending with a loss in Minnesota on a weekend split. MRU did lose more than they gained in the graduation/recruitment sweepstakes, so everybody will be looking to see if they will slide this year.

The Hørny Ønes seem to be getting better every year, although they still missed the playoffs (again) last year. This will be a stern test for them. The Bedrock Dinos have a large and WHL-laden recruiting class. They did lose some veteran leadership which could hurt them in the long run. We'll see.

Oct 6: Favourites Dominate Opening Night

With the Bisons playing Saturday-Sunday, all we have on opening night is the out-of-town scoreboard. However, there was an afternoon story about 150 WHL grads playing in the CW. More on that later.

The opening night of the CW indicates that the conference may be subdividing into haves and have nots this year. The Evil Monkeys have added a load of players the last two years and are poised to make a run for the title. On the other hand, MRU may have peaked a year ago. This was a whuppin. Seven different Monkeys had one goal each, and Brendan Burke made 24 saves for the shutout. Wyatt Hoflin started for the Bluegars stopped 23 of 27 through two periods, and Colin Cooper stopped 10 of 13 in the third. The rematch goes Saturday at MRU.

The Hørny Ønes led 1-0 until almost 5 minutes into the 3rd period. Bedrock exploded for 3 goals between 15 and 18 minutes of the 3rd to walk away in a breeze. Matthew Greenfield stopped 26 of 27 for the win, and Ty Edmonds stopped 30 of 34 in the loss. Lethbridge will host Saturday's rematch.

The Banjo Cats were doing fairly well in pre-season, gaining a win over these very same Banjo Mutts and a split with the Bisons. Then last weekend they lost a pair of 8-0 games in the States and here they got skunked by their northern hillbilly brethren. The Mutts had 8 different goalscorers. Jordon Cooke stopped 20 of 22 for the win. Michael Herringer stopped 37 of 45 in his debut loss. He looked good in pre-season but the Kittens' blue line can have a negative effect on a guy. Saturday's rematch goes in Saskatown.

The CW posted a story about the 150 WHL grads playing in the league this year. They break down the players by their WHL alma matter and their CW team. The link has a complete listing. In summary, here are the grand totals by team:

Alberta – 25
Calgary – 18
Lethbridge – 20
Manitoba – 13
Mount Royal – 13
Regina – 15
Saskatchewan – 24
UBC – 22

Oct 7: Bisons Lose Opener

It is the first Saturday night of the season and the CW's crappy website is still not working. This could have been tolerated in past seasons when they had LeagueStat current and operational. That is no longer the case. They spent all their money on a new logo, which is nice but non-essential. The archives (to the extent they even have archives) will remain there. But now we are stuck with the stats links from the main page, where they have no rosters, no game day scoreboard, and boxscores list only the starting lineup. Last year they brought in "Hockey Tech" for links from the website. No more. Very disappointing. Now the CW site is the same as the US site. (Did the bozos at the CIS realize their new abbreviation would be "US" when the switched to U-Sports?)

The Bison opener was a strange one. The Bisons opened strong and at one point held a 13-2 lead in shots, bit just a 1-0 lead on the scoreboard, by defenceman Sean Christensen. Then Justin Augert was assessed a borderline highsticking penalty. The T-irds' powerplay was nothing special but then notched a goal out of nowhere, by Matt Ravel.

The 2nd period was back-and-forth, and UBC emerged with a 3-2 lead. Byron Spriggs appeared to choose to play the puck rather than pounce for a faceoff on the go-ahead goal, Quinton Lisoway then tied the game, and then a shorthanded goal on a fumbled pass put the T-irds ahead to stay.

The 3rd period was one Spriggs would love to forget. He gave up 3 goals on 11 shots, and 6 goals on 27 shots on the night. Matt Hewitt stopped 32 of 36 shots for the win.

Here's how they lined up:

MANITOBA

Goal
35 Spriggs (34 Sydora)

Defence
2 Henry - 25 Skrumeda
4 Bresciani - 16 Heinrichs
3 Christensen

23 Schreyer

Note: The 7 forwards on the 3rd/4th lines were interchanged quite a bit.

Scratches:
1 Paulic - 9 Hunter - 11 Sharonov

I infer that Paulic is injured because I never saw him dressed for the home pre-season games.

This was as one-sided as it sounds. Tyhe shots were 38-18 for the Monkeys. Zach Sawchenko had his first start for the Monkeys and got the win. Wyatt Hoflin was tagged with the loss for MRU. IMO that cartoonish new logo in and of itself knocks MRU down a peg or two.

The Bisons once again got off to a great start by dominating the shot clock. However, they were not able to cash in and in fact rallied from down 0-2 to win this one. The final shots on goal were 29-16 in favour of the Bisons, including 14-5 in the 3rd. Those numbers reflected the flow of the game.

Captain Brett Stovin scored the winner though suffering a broken nose. Both he and Quintin Lisoway left the ice for repairs with a towel around their face, though neither incident drew a penalty. There were a lot of controversial calls in the game. But by the 3rd period the players had calmed down a lot.

Neither side switched their roster from Saturday. UBC switched goaltenders. UBC really only used 10 of the 12 forwards on any sort of a regular basis. Here's how they lined up:

MANITOBA

Goal
35 Spriggs (34 Sydora)

Defence
3 Christensen - 4 Bresciani
16 Heinrichs - 2 Henry

9 Hayer - 20 Glover - 17 - Vetterl
16 Popoff - 10 Revel - 12 Buonassisi
13 Becker - 5 Stenerson - 21 Nachtigall

Scratches
6 Dosanjh - 7 Faith - 27 Connolly
28 Millar - 35 Knott

18:46 UBC Vetterl - PP

52:47 Manitoba Stovin - PP

Through two games, Spriggs has an .814 save percentage. That number needs to get better for the Bisons to host a playoff series. Also, they need to finish above .500 at home.

As for UBC, the pace and physicality took their toll. Their whole lineup walked gingerly onto the ice for the 3rd period on Sunday. Do they have what it takes to grind their way through tough series like this one all year?

It is very early but it appears that the die may have been cast for the balance of the season. Sask and Alberta had dominating sweeps. Manitoba, Calgary, UBC, and Lethbridge all had splits. And teams named "Cougars" have had it rough.

There are more than the usual number of links from both teams in this series. Lots of them were from last week but we are still early in the season so preview stuff is fairly fresh.

The Evil Monkeys are the fastest out of the gate this year, so maybe its not a great time to be facing them. On the other hand, the Bisons went 1-3-0 against them last year after going 3-1-0 the one before that. So if the Bisons get some points in Edmontown they could set themselves up for the balance of the season.

Both games are on CanadaWest.tv, as are all CW games this year, but there is no radio. The CW live updates are not what they once were when LeagueStat and Hockey Tech were involved. Maybe it will be better this week.

The T-irds will host the Bedrock Dinos at their old barn (the Father David Bauer Arena) but will play the balance of their season at the new Mitchell Arena. Both teams split last weekend so this series should be a decent measuring stick for all involved. UBC looked pretty beat up to me after the Bison series. Can the Bedrock Boys take advantage?

The Hørny Ønes seem to be getting better and will not be a pushover. The Banjo Mutts are hard to gauge. They continued to stack new recruits without losing anything. However, they were kind of mediocre in pre-season. Was last week's squash of Regina more of a commentary on Regina being weak? Or Sask being strong?

This Cat Fight sees two very desperate teams. Both were squashed last weekend. The difference is that the Bluegars have been a solid contender in recent seasons. I thought Regina looked like they were coming along nicely. In pre-season they split with the Bisons and split at home, beating Sask and losing to Calgary. Maybe their season peaked in September.

My god, could Western (Ontario, not Canada) actually be worse than last year? Seems so with this debacle following a 10-1 beat down by Michigan. This weekend in the ivy could be scary. Their roster is loaded with first and second years, so maybe they learn to play defense as the season moves along.

I think Western may be one of the better OUA-West teams this year. Unfortunately for them, they have 2 solid major junior goaltenders in Peressini and Herbst, but both were hurt and unable to suit up against Waterloo leaving them to play a goalie from Junior C along with a goalie whose experience appears to be local men's league. Not sure how long-term the injuries are, but I wouldn't bank on them receiving 0.750 goaltending moving forward if they get either starting goalie back.

Before I get to the Friday night round-up, the good news is that the CW has brought back the Hockey Tech and LeagueStat links! I was ready to scream at the useless new CW site then thought I would give one last check at the old links, AND THEY WERE WORKING! It's nice to have the proper links back. Kudos to the CW for bringing them back.

The Bison scratches were the same as for last weekend against UBC, meaning that they once again played with just 5 defencemen. I don't like seeing a roster with just 7 defencemen on it. It is better to have a d-man moved forward than the reverse.

Nick Zajac scored both Bison goals and Byron Spriggs stopped 32 of 37 shots on goal in taking the loss. Meanwhile, Cole Sanford scored twice for the Monkeys and Brendan Burke stopped 23 of 25 shots for the win.

The game was 3-2 late in the 3rd period when the Bisons were applying much pressureand seemed poise to force some overtime. However, two late goals against the grain of play made the final scoreline unflattering considering the type of game.

The rematch goes Saturday at 5:00 p.m. MDT, or 6:00 p.m. CDT. Alberta does a great job on CanadaWest.tv and for non-subscribers it might be worth the coinage.

Yabba Dabba Doo! There is joy in the Town of Bedrock as the Dinos beat the T-irds. I had a hunch that UBC was beat up after the tough weekend in Manitoba, and it appeared to be the case. They dressed just 17 skaters and 2 goaltenders. Jordan Papirny stopped 21 of 22 shots and Coda Gordon had two goals to lead the way for the win. Matt Hewitt stopped 28 of 34 shots in the loss. I caught the ending of this one and must say that UBC did a good job on the broadcast.

The Herd was deservedly beaten by the Evil Monkeys to complete the sweep. They dressed the same line-up as in the three previous league games. The Monkeys continued their goaltender rotation, going with newcomer Zack Sawchenko. Byron Spriggs has been in net for all four Bison games thus far, start to finish. Adam Henry scored for the Bisons, a 2nd period goal which made it 2-1. A pair of 3rd period insurance goals put it away for the Monkeys. In the end, the shots were 37-18.

Next Friday and Saturday the Bisons will host the Saskatchewan Banjo Mutts. My impression of the teams thus far is that Alberta is the best, followed by Calgary, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. I think Lethbridge looks to be the best of the rest, barely. The jury is still out on UBC, MRU, and Regina.

The last two teams in the league solved that problem by playing a pair of 3-pointers, and splitting them. This type of series shows why the CW should use the IIHF point system (3-2-1-0), just like the women's league does.

In this one even the shoot-out went into overtime, 7 rounds to be exact. MRU led 48-35 on the shot clock. Cody Fowlie of Regina and Brad Kennedy of MRU each scored twice. MRU switched goaltenders, going with the returning Colin Cooper. Regina stuck with Michael Herringer. What I saw of the game was loose and exciting, but not very convincing. The Bluegars have definitely taken a step back this year. Now the question is whether the last two weekends (in which they were outscored 30-2 over 4 games) were the oddity for Regina, or their natural level to which they will inevitably return.

The T-irds were badly beat up last weekend against the Bisons, and the problems continue. They dressed just 19 on Friday, and only 18 on Saturday. After two periods, the shots were a respectable 25-20 in favour of the Bedrock Boys. But the score was 4-0. UBC then mustered just 5 shots in the 3rd, to be outshot 35-25 on the night. So the stats were not as one-sided as the score.

Drydn Dow and Riley Sheen each had two goals for the winners. The Dinos continued their goaltender rotation, going with Matthew Greenfield for the shutout. Rylan Toth went the distance in UBC's goal. Bedrock scored 4 goals on 10 PP opportunities in a penalty-filled game.

The final game of Saturday night was Sask's decent win over the Hørny Ønes. The game was very close, with Sask scoring two late goals to stack the numbers. Jordon Cooke stopped 26 of 28 shots for the win, and Garret Hughson stopped 27 of 32 in suffering the loss.

The Mutts come to town on a 4-game winning streak, and having won silver at last year's nationals. To temper the enthusiasm, the 4 wins have been against the two non-playoff teams from a year ago, and they were just 1-3-0 in the pre-season. The Bisons cannot be happy about the way they were handled by the Monkeys last weekend. However, I suppose that can be forgiven. The Monkeys have been off to an incredible start.

As always, the staff at the Wayne Fleming Arena will have to watch to make sure that the Huskies don't get sick when they drink from the toilets. The players are often overwhelmed during the early season when they still feel intimidated by things like showers experienced when they leave their home province.

Last year the Bisons had a 2-1-1 record against Sask, and over the previous 4 years are 7-7-2. The Bisons have started the same 20 players every game, including just 5 defencemen. Hopefully, we'll see some new bodies make their regular season debut. Of those in the line-up, Nick Zajac, Adam Henry, and Michael St. Croix all have 4 points in 4 games. In goal, Byron Spriggs' numbers are less than stellar (1-3-0, .855 S%, 4.26 GAA).

This home-and-home series may well be the highlight nation-wide. Bedrock U dropped a point when they lost in OT to Lethbridge, otherwise both sides have been on a roll. The Monkeys have looked impressive so far, making this series a measuring stick for the Dinos. Both sides have preview stories up and ready for you.

After a disappointing recruiting season, the Bluegars were covered in more question marks than the Riddler entering the season. They have thus far been hammered by the Monkeys and split a pair of shoot-out games with Regina. The Hørny Ønes technically have the smae record, but they have played Calgary and Sask, making their start infinitely better. This series will help shed light on whether these teams have really changed their statuses from prior seasons.

The Banjo Cats must be delighted with their 3 point weekend last week. They were coming off a disastrous 4 game stretch where they were outscored 30-2. UBC was physically wasted after their Bison series, and succumbed meekly to Bedrock. I suspect that this series will be key to playoff aspirations of both teams.

The Bisons won this one in dramatic fashion. They tied the game in the last minute on a powerplay and with an empty net, then won in overtime.

Here's how they lined up:

MANITOBA
Goal
35 Spriggs (34 Sydora)

Defence
2 Henry - 3 Christensen
16 Heinrichs - 4 Bresciani
25 Skrumeda

Forwards
24 Augert - 14 Nault - 18 St. Croix
12 Zajac - 28 Stovin - 27 Franko
8 Bilton - 21 Brooks - 19 Spencer
15 S Bowles - 23 Schreyer - 26 Lisoway
17 Callis

Scratches:
1 Paulic - 9 Hunter - 11 Sharonov
13 Laurencelle - 20 Keane - 22 B Bowles
29 Wasylak

SASKATCHEWAN
Goal
31 Kozun (32 Cooke)

Defence
4 Harmsworth - 2 McFaull
5 J Forsberg - 8 Lishchynsky
3 Cox - 6 Fransoo

Forwards
11 Shirley - 14 McVeigh - 7 Roach
18 Yakubowski - 28 Lawrence - 23 Thomas
16 Stadnyk - 26 Johnson - 12 Gay
15 Sofillas - 19 Bauml - 10 Cable

Scratches:
9 Tkach - 13 Folk - 17 Blair
22 Johnson - 27 Johnston - 29 A Forsberg

Scorers:

1st - 08:17 - Man Nick Zajac PP
1st - 13:35 - Sask John Lawrence
1st - 16:45 - Sask Josh Roach SH
2nd - 01:28 - Man Shawn Bowles
3rd - 01:32 - Sask Kohl Bauml
3rd - 19:45 - Man Kamerin Nault PP
OT1 - 03:07 - Man Zach Franko

Zajac's opener was his 3rd of the season, to lead the team. It was on the PP, which was 2 for 4 on the night. Meanwhile, Sask went 0-for-5. There's the difference right there. Sask's opening goal was the best passing play of the night. Their go-ahead short-handed goal from Roach was a bad blueline turnover by the Bisons, their second on the same PP.

The only goal of the 2nd, from Bowles, also came from a turnover.

The 3rd period saw Sask jump out to an early lead, followed by a prolonged winding-down of the clock. I remember being shocked there were less than 5 minutes left when Skrumeda took a penalty for the Bisons. The Herd killed it off and then forced the issue, causing the Mutts to take a penalty. Nault scored on the power play, with an empty net.

In OT, Generalissimo Franko scored a Laine-like winner from the right wing face-off circle. There were no other close calls. So after a quick drink from the toilet, the Mutts were off to their doghouse for the night.

On the night, Byron Spriggs had his best game of the season, stopping 34 of 37 shots. Taran Kozan (in his 2nd start of the season) stopped 19 of 23 in taking the loss.

Saturday's rematch goes at 6:00 p.m. at the Wayne Fleming Arena. Don't forget to avoid the Route 90 construction zone.

The Bluegars marched down the road to Lethbridge and scored a solid and important victory. MRU still has a contingent of veterans who have moved the team into near-contender status, and they seemed to have been determined to not allow their program to become an also-ran without a fight. The Hørny Ønes had two solid weekends, and deserved a ranking higher than MRU's. Colin Cooper stopped 21 of 23 for the in, and Ty Edmonds took the loss, with 27 saves on 31 shots. The last two Bluegar goals were into an empty net.

What a wild game this must have been. I caught the ending on-line after getting home from the Bison game. For a game with 12 goals, there was a relative paucity of shots, just 33-28 in favour of the Monkeys. Brendan Burke got the win, Matthew Greenfield took the loss, and each side had one 2-goal scorer, Dylan Bredo for the Monkeys and Riley Sheen for Bedrock U. On Saturday the scene shifts to Edmontown for the rematch.

I caught the ending of this one after I saw the end of the game from the Town of Bedrock. Regina held a 2-1 lead in the 3rd period until UBC scored 3 goals in 2:13 in the middle of the period. Michael Herringer stopped 27 of 31 in a losing effort, and veteran Matt Hewitt saved the day for the T-irds, stopping 37 of 39 shots. Once again, UBC played one man short. I suspect that the game links will be available Saturday morning. Saturday's rematch is a matinee.
