2016 2nd Round pick: 58th overall Taylor Raddysh

#40 on our Draft List

Raddysh is a real goal scoring threat. He has a very good wrist shot and a quick release. With his strong hockey IQ, Raddysh is able to find openings in the defence to set up for a one-timer. He goes hard to the net and pounces on rebounds. Raddysh protects the puck well down low on the cycle, using his body and his stick handling to keep the puck away from the opponent. He has excellent vision and has really improved his play making this season, making tape-to-tape passes to teammates and threading the needle through tight spaces to create scoring opportunities. Raddysh uses his size, strength and balance to win loose pucks on the boards, and create increased offensive opportunities for his linemates.

Raddysh’s defensive game is a work in progress. He comes back on the back check and is willing to play a gritty game in his own end. However, Raddysh needs to work on his defensive positioning. He can get himself out of position looking for big hits, or by puck chasing at times. He also needs to keep his feet moving when defending in his own end.

Taylor Raddysh has the talent to be an effective contributor in a team’s top six. While he will likely never be the main guy on a line, he does have the skill to keep up and play with other talented players, and is willing to use his size and strength as assets to create offence. He has some things to work on, and like many young prospects needs to add muscle going forward, but there is real upside here. Raddysh’s game is comparable to Chris Kunitz, but this is a stylistic comparison only and not one based on talent.

I've seen Raddysh develop over the past two years here in Erie and he's a player with a ton of promise. The scouting report above says his "hockey IQ" is strong, but that phrase (as well as "hockey sense") are so overused and ill defined it's hard to tell what it even means. Raddysh has a keen awareness in the offensive zone, he often wins loose puck battles and seems to have a knack for anticipating where the puck is going to bounce after a shot or errant pass along the boards. The scouting report is spot on when it says he's unlikely to ever be the main guy on his line. If surrounded with adequate talent, however, he can really produce. His "hockey IQ" is lacking in the defensive zone. It's not a question of effort, he just seems a step or two behind at times. Best case scenario he develops into a Kyle Okposo type player (maybe not quite as many goals) who thrives on the wing of a good center. More likely though is that he'll be a rotating top 6/9 guy similar to Joel Ward

I definitely wouldn't mind if we took a look at Darren.

The knock on him is he's 21 years old in a league that let's 15 year olds play. It's impossible to project that. Calling him MAB is just mind boggling to me though, he's anything but MAB, who relied almost exclusively on his power play shot. Draddysh is extremely intelligent, positionally sound, and has elite level vision. There is also a very big size difference.

I hesitate to call him physical, because of his age, but he plays the body and his shot is heavy and accurate, with slightly above average skating. He's also a puck hog, he plays 30 minutes a night and has some of the most favorable advanced stats in the CHL.

A better stylistic comparison would be a bigger, slower, Ryan Ellis or Dan Boyle.

That's a very favorable and I'd say even accurate comparison. But that's what frightens me because Boyle was kind of "meh" defensively but "wow" offensively. D Raddysh is more versatile than a slap shot and it's safe to assume he'll be able to sufficiently run a power play but I'm not sure how he's going to translate to the speed of the NHL game -especially at the defensive level. Thus the Bergeron comparison. Park him on the point and I know he'll do well. But beyond that I still have a lot of questions. I've kept an eye on him through the season and while he's got great highlights like game winners, there's also highlights of getting torched like the OT goal in game 6 vs London. I remember that one in specific because of how disturbed I was at Raddysh's handling of a situation that merely started as a missed poke check by Cirelli. Now to be honest game film in junior doesn't concern me. Burn it and throw it all out for all I care. I'm not so concerned with junior highlights as I am wondering how he'd do in the AHL because all said Darren's clearly a late bloomer and a prospect like him is very difficult to judge, especially when he is on such a stacked team. The offensive intangibles are there but I look at players like him and sometimes wonder "why was he not converted to forward?" With good reason he put up DeAngelo-like numbers but like I said it's all about taking it to the next level. Raddysh's evaluation begins with me next year.

Ultimately I'm just greatly tempering my expectations and letting the fact that he was not drafted nor made the Sharks or Kings on tryout do the talking as opposed to what I feel is a difficult evaluation of an overaged player on a stacked team.

I'll be happy if we sign him but I'm not gonna hold my breath. Darren Raddysh's unproven potential feels like Tyler Johnson all over again. You can see all the tools but it's a matter if the kid is gonna be a masterpiece like Johnson has shown to be at times or a blunder like a Cory Conacher.

I'd be ecstatic even if he was a blunder like Conacher. That was a huge net gain for us and Yzerman sprinkled some fairy dust on that and turned him into Bishop.

I'll take it a step further. Even as a Kostka/Barberio type, he'd be an excellent pickup for Syracuse, good organizational depth, and a nice #7 PP specialist down the road.

Here is the rub. We already have Dylan Blujus and Ben Thomas as RD in Syracuse. Add to the mix Erik Cernak and Matthew Spencer who are entering their final seasons in the CHL, and there really is no fit for Raddysh, unfortunately. We have some very good RHD prospects. None with 1/2 or star power upside, but plenty of 3/4's.

There's little to no fit on an organizational level but lucky for Darren our RHD prospects are gonna be lucky to score 15 points a year. At least to Darren's credit we could plug him in on the power play ala MAB and he'd produce at least that many assists and possibly up to 10 goals on a really good year. I can't say I'm optimistic of it happening but it's not impossible. If we give him a look then at least the rest is up to him.

As for Taylor I don't think he has anything left to prove at the OHL level. If he works on his skating I don't see why he can't be a 20 goal scorer. He'll add a good dynamic to the power play because he works well from the slot.

Taylor has plenty to prove at the OHL. Like can he produce on a line that doesn't have a top-3 pick on it.

This isn't a Drouin situation - or even a Connolly situation. He has plenty of fundamentals to work on, and he absolutely still has plenty to prove.
