fantastic goal by Chile to finish off the game, the USA will be eliminated in the group stage

Nigeria, Croatia, South Korea, Brazil Germany and France have advanced to the R16; Chile with 4 points should be in good shape as well, England have 2 which is usually not enough but they will wait the next few days for other results

Really hope the boys are focused today against Mexico and aren't content with just getting through. Switching off early in the tourney killed the u21s when they ran into a top team and Portugal annihilated them; and if these kids are content in this one I will be very anxious about some big strong african team running them off of the park in the first knockout.

Yea gotta be wary facing teams of 25 year olds.

Chile and Belgium are confirmed two of the four best third place finishers. Australia are in good shape as well after they beat Argentina who exited the tournament with 0 points. England will wait for results today, they have 2 points. England are hoping South Africa lose and all three of North Korea, Syria and New Zealand get nothing more than a point

New Zealand defeated Paraguay at the death in Puerto Montt while France beat Syria 4-0 in Concepcion.

France and NZ go through as top two while it seems Paraguay might get in through a 3rd place position.

Sorry England.

Nigeria seem to have a clear path to the semis again, Brazil is the one challenger in the quarters but Brazil don't look too strong

As mentioned, England eliminated, if one of North Korea or South Africa win they advance, Paraguay must hope neither win

As for New Zealand, that's only their 3rd win in 21 U17 World Cup matches

wow, North Korea score in the 92nd minute after Costa Rica failed to clear a free kick to beat Costa Rica and advance to the next round. The good news for Costa Rica is their 4 points was enough to progress as well. Paraguay are out after failing to get a result against New Zealand

So here are the Round of 16 matchups and their quarters

Croatia vs. Germany
Mali vs. North Korea

South Korea vs. Belgium
France vs. Costa Rica

Russia vs. Ecuador
Mexico vs. Chile

Brazil vs. New Zealand
Nigeria vs. Australia

Brazil go through with a 96th minute penalty kick but in fairness they totally deserved to win, New Zealand didn't even have a shot on target, yet they did miss a penalty as well

Mexico cruised to a win over Chile, didn't see the game but stats showed Mexico dominated

Nearing halftime and Croatia lead Germany, Germany with more chances but Croatia play good football, too bad 10 of the starting 11 is from Dinamo, they would be likeable if it wasn't that case

Croatia beat Germany 2:0, Germany was the better team but Semper made some good saves and the Germans really couldn't muster any clear cut chances at the end of the game, Croatians defended well and did well to pass out the back when needed. Mali easily beat North Korea and that sets up a quarterfinal between the two winners today

Costa Rica making another run at another World Cup and they did it in vintage style, defending well against France then knocking them out on penalty kicks. At the U17 level a tie game goes straight to penalties. Ecuador beat Russia pretty easily, not surprised with the result but surprised how easily Ecuador won

Quarterfinal matches will be played on Sunday and Monday

Croatia vs. Mali
Belgium vs. Costa Rica
Ecuador vs. Mexico
Nigeria vs. Brazil

The bottom half of the bracket looks much stronger with Nigeria and Mexico being legit contenders to win this title and Brazil slowly improving as the tournament goes on. Ecuador also cannot be underestimated. Belgium should be favorites to make the semifinals over CRC while Croatia face another African test against Mali. Mali are the African champions at U17 level and are apparently better than the Nigerians who Croatia beat in the groups

All the African teams on these youth tournaments have players that are actually older. No wonder Nigeria keeps winning at this level, but can't do **** on senior level.

Speaking of Russia, what a disgrace, I didn't expect this result.

Both the African sides remaining make the semifinals, both fairly comfortably as well despite the different scorelines. Nigeria defeat Brazil 3:0 in a match where the Brazilian goalkeeper didn't have a great day. Nigeria were slightly better team however Brazil had their chances in the first half, once Nigeria took the lead they took control of the game

Mali defeat Croatia 1:0, despite the score, Mali totally dominated, Croatia only had one shot on target and their star player Brekalo was completely marked out of the game. Mali are well organized and have a pacey attack but boy do they suck at finishing at I know these are 16-17 year old kids but their game management was poor, instead of keeping possession in the dying minutes they would try long range shots

Belgium beat Costa Rica to advance to the semis for the first time ever :handclap:

It's funny because this really isn't the most talented generation of players, there are no Hazard-like prospects, but they play really well together as a team. I don't think they will beat Mali though. (had a scoreless draw vs them in the group stage but they were completely dominated - basically a miracle they even got a point out of that game)

Nigeria are U17 champions for the second consecutive tournament, 5th time overall which is the most of any country. Didn't watch the game but did catch the end of the 3rd place match between Belgium and Mexico, crazy finish with two goals scored in the final minutes. Belgium had their captain sent off but scored a few moments later on a counter when Vanzeir chipped the goalkeeper. Mexico scored in the 88th minute and it looked like it was going to penalty kicks however Vanzeir scored the winner for Belgium in the 93rd minute

For both Mali and Belgium its their first medal at U17 level

Top scorer was Victor Osimhen of Nigeria with an incredible 10 goals, considering the player in 2nd was Germany's Eggestein with 4. Golden Ball winner was also from Nigeria, Kelechi Nwakali, however looking at past winners that doesn't guarantee much other than Kroos and Fabregas who won it in the 2000s
