Yeah, it's not like Duclair has the best possession stats on the team and leads the roster in +/- or anything. If we give him more ice-time he would destroy our defense (?), because he might score like Peter Forsberg again and excite the fans! Can't have that!

Get out of here with that filthy voodoo magic talk. Offense isn't a form of defense.

Hey Guys! Simple 100% hypothetical question: Anyone else wins the lottery Matthews, would you move OEL for Matthews or is the lack of depth with defensive prospects too much to make that move?

Cheers

Search the trade board if you want detailed explanations, because it was discussed in a dozen threads, but the answer is always no to OEL for Matthews. The Coyotes are not the Oilers. ;)

Thanks! I figured as much and never search the trade boards for an answer from a teams fanbase. Much more accurate to come here and get real fans responses.:)

Maybe Tip hasn't seen these stats, because we all know +/- and possession stats are all knowing/telling. Obviously Duclair should have more TOI because it would help our D and Offense both! Tip sure is dumb:)

Can't add much to XX but in the interests of context - OEL could only be moved if the haul back was something that addressed areas of real need for the Coyotes. Turns out the area of real need is defense, so we'd be shooting ourselves in the foot trading OEL for Matthews.

Actually no, because we've had one of the worst defenses in the league for four years now, on a team that traps like there's no tomorrow.

Difference between having defensemen who have logged a lot of minutes in a lot of situations vs trying to sift through younger players and having a player like Gormley or Rundblad not pan out. Add to that the forwards who were solid in two-way play to what our roster had degraded to (Ribeiro, injuries to Hanzal/Boedker, Moss) and the **** storm starts.

Okay. If his advanced stats looks good, his a actual statistics look good, and the eyeball test looks good, then what incentive is there not to play him? When he's on the ice with Domi and Hanzal, they absolutely dominate possession for almost entire shifts at a time.

Since you're so concerned about our defense, have you ever heard of the concept of defending through possession? Basically if we control the puck for the entire shift, it's kind of hard for the other team to score.

An example of a line playing this style, despite not consisting of traditional two-way players, was Whitney-Hanzal-Vrbata. Whitney and Vrbata were more in the mold of finesse players, as opposed to grinding, defensive forwards such as Vern Fiddler or Boyd Gordon, however they were damn near tops in the NHL in plus/minus and goals against during their time together, because they spent most of their shifts controlling the puck, in the opponent's zone.

All I have to say is that Domi should be averaging 16+ min TOI this season. Duclair should be averaging close to 15 min TOI and neither are approaching that metric.

If we continue to see next year with the TOI the way it is this year, how much longer do we need to keep Dino Dave around?

We're going on 5 years w/o Playoff spot. Even bad teams with good coaches fire the coaches over less.

Domi avg. 16:10 TOI/gm
Duclair = 14.12
Reider = 17.55
Martinook = 15.22

I think these numbers are approaching the metric YOU were talking about.

If this numbers were presented to you at the first of the year you would have been ecstatic. These numbers are far greater than I would have imagined they would get. This team under DT has overachieved except for last year. You don't fire a coach for that.
