I'm assuming that only pasting part of Bruce's column falls within the realm of "fair dealing".

The Canadian Interuniversity Sport men's hockey conference top 10 committee, of which I've been a member for at least 15 years, has sometimes (OK, quite often) been criticized for getting the weekly rankings wrong.

This season has been better than most.

Our current top 10 looks like this: 1. UNB 2. UQTR 3. Saskatchewan 4. Alberta 5. Acadia 6. St. FX, 7. McGill 8. Carleton 9. Mount Royal 10. Saint Mary's.

Well, someone from Manitoba who goes by the handle Hollywood3 on hockeyfutures.com ranks all 35 teams (36 when the Ottawa Gee-Gees return from suspension next season) all season.

Hollywood has a detailed, but not complex, system, in that teams are weighted according to the opponents they play.

For example, UNB - 31-4-3 overall - is the only one in the A+ bracket.

The V-Reds' record is factored in against A level teams, B level, B to C+ level, C and below, non-conference, etc.

This system is supposed to give a more accurate measure of how the top 10 should stand.

Hollywood3 has the same top 10 teams in his rankings as the CIS committee has compiled with ours.

The order isn't the same but is similar.

Hollywood 3: 1. UNB 2. Saskatchewan 3. UQTR 4. St. FX 5. Alberta 6. Acadia 7. Saint Mary's 8. Mount Royal 9. McGill 10. Carleton.

These teams just played 2 weeks ago in the Bisons' final home games of the season. So, not much to add to that preview!

The teams are #11 and #12 in the OHT36 national rankings. It was not until the final game of the season that the Bisons clinched the race for 4th, capitalizing on Bedrock's loss to Lethbridge. The Dinos were in serious danger of missing the playoffs after going 4-7-3 in the 1st half. They rallied in the 2nd half, going 8-5-1. Their season peaked in weeks 11 and 12 when they swept 4 games against Alberta and Mount Royal. However, with a shot at 4th place they closed with a sweep at the hands of the Bisons and a split with Lethbridge.

Despite the 4 straight wins in head-to-head play this season, the teams have been very close over the years. In the last 5 years, the Bisons are 12-5-5 and Calgary is 10-11-1.

In the 1st half, UBC was 7-4-3. In the 2nd half, they fell to 4-9-1. No doubt that UBC has been on the decline this season. Meanwhile, MRU just finished a disappointing end to the season where they lost the race for 2nd place. They were solid all year long. In head-to-head this year it was 2-2, with MRU leading 5-4 on points. Since MRU joined the league, UBC is 10-4-2 and MRU is 6-7-3. That means OT in 5 of 16 games. On the season, MRU had a big edge in GF and GA. MRU was 100-73 and UBC was 72-90. I am wondering what they will do with goaltending. For UBC, Mark Hewitt seemed to be #1 yet Eric Williams got both starts last weekend against Manitoba. After riding Chris Collins in the 1st half, MRU started to start Cam Lanigan every Friday.

I'm assuming that only pasting part of Bruce's column falls within the realm of "fair dealing".

This was a peculiar season in the OHT36 in that there was a mass of C+ teams who never quite got it together to jump to B level. The 11 and 12 ranked teams are Manitoba and Calgary and both are vulnerable within C+ and C levels. If both could have done better there, their good records against teams like Alberta would have moved them well into B level.

Feb 19: Bisons Take the Opener

This was a peculiar game. The Dinos came out firing, but most of their best chances saw them shoot wide or high. After the Bisons killed a 1st period penalty, they opened scoring on a scrambled goal scored by Warren Callis. After the goal the Bisons went into a defensive shell and wound up being outshot 12-2 on the period. This could have proved hazardous.

The 2nd was a different story. The play was more wide open. The Bisons took a 3-0 lead on goals from Shaq Merasty and Brett Brooks. Both plays involved the Bisons playing hard through the slot and Bedrock watching and putting up only limited physical resistance. Merasty's goal followed some hard work from Jonah Wasylak, who was flat on his back when the goal was scored. Brooks' goal was a wrap-around scored while Schreyer was being shoved by a Bedrock defenceman in the crease. The Dinos got one back when Elgin Pearce showed great patience dragging the puck through the slot before flipping it in.

The Bison approach to the 3rd period was just to kill time. Let the clock tick. The shots were 11-4 in favour of Bedrock U.

Game two goes Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at the Wayne Fleming Arena on the U of M Campus. Game three, if necessary, goes Sunday at 3:00 p.m.

After a plethora of one-sided games on Wednesday, Friday was overtime night. Many people fancied Ryerson in pre-season, so maybe a playoff run following a mediocre season is in the cards for them. Only one of the four series is going the distance. After two overtime games, the anticipated closeness of the UOIT-Queen's series has come to fruition.

One bizarre thing about the OUA is the extreme shots totals. There were 87 shots in McGill/Concordia, 66 in OUIT/Queen's, 78 in UWO/Laurier, and 93 in Waterloo/Ryerson. All winners on Friday won the shot clock battle. Queen's was the only team with fewer than 30 shots.

I had to miss this game but did watch lots at CanadaWest.tv. The Bisons controlled territory and possession but Steven Stanford was more than equal to the task. Brett Stovin scored the sole goal for the Bisons and Elgin Pearce scored twice for Bedrock U. Justin Paulic took the loss in the Bison goal. The rubber match goes Sunday at 3:00 p.m. The winner will be off to Saskatchewan next weekend for the semi-finals.

There were no games in the AUS because both quarter-final series were swept on Friday. In their semi-finals, New Brunswick hosts UPEI and St. FX hosts Saint Mary's.

In the OUA East, the only series going the limit is UOIT v Queen's. The winner of that will visit UQTR in one divisional semi-final whilst McGill will host Carleton in the other.

The OUA West is more complicated. York v Toronto and Guelph v Windsor are both going to game 3. If York wins they would host Ryerson in one series and Western Ontario would play the Guelph/Windsor winner in the other. However, if Toronto pulls the upset they would visit Western Ontario in one series and the Guelph/Windsor winner would host Ryerson in the other.

This was a game of ebbs and flows. The Dinos were dominant in the 1st period and built a 2-0 lead on two goals by Spencer Edwards.

The Bisons must have had quite a pep-talk at the intermission as they came out dominating the Dinos physically and generating several scoring chances. Justin Augert trimmed the lead to 2-1. And after he did so the Bisons were very unlucky to avoid the tieing goal.

The 2nd intermission again caused the game to turn. An early borderline penalty call gave the Dinos the chance to score their 3rd powerplay goal of the game, and Elgin Pearce cashed in. Once down 3-1 the Bisons lost all jump as Bedrock U pulled away.

So now the Bisons are in next-year country. The team should have lots of optimism since the entire roster is eligible to return. They will likely want at least one more defenceman. Otherwise any new recruits would have to be good enough to replace an existing player.

York finished 1st in the OUA West. However, they missed the playoffs last year and were only 18th in the OHT36 rankings. They were a very vulnerable 1st place team, even against a mediocre team like Toronto. After such an easy regular season schedule, it is perhaps fitting that Windsor got the shoe. The UOIT-Queen's series was a toss-up on paper and it figured to go the distance.

In Saturday's clincher the shots were 41-24, yet it was not decided until an empty-netter sealed the deal. Jordon Cooke got both wins for the Mutts and Steven Stanford suffered both losses for Bedrock U. Calgary dressed 2 men short on Friday, andone man short on Saturday. After a 3-games-in-3-days quarter-final against the Bisons, Bedrock must have been somewhat worse for wear.

After barely scraping into 2nd place, the Evil Monkeys tore the Bluegars apart on Friday night. The Saturday game was only decided by an empty-netter. The Monkeys stuck with Luke Siemens for both games, as did MRU with Chris Collins. The Monkeys carried the play both nights, with shot margins of 32-17 and 32-24.

So the Monkeys and Mutts are assured of berths in the nationals. The last time that happened they met in the final.

The Bison Broads had to win back-to-back away series to get to the conference final, and they did it! Once again, the deciding game was in overtime. However, the Fat Pandas never even lasted 5 minutes. Last weekend the Mutts lasted almost 5 overtime periods! In the other series, UBC defeated Regina, also in 3 games. So yet another road trip, one more province to the west.

The Bisons wrapped this up on Friday night. The Bisons were 2nd and MRU 7th in the regular season. There were three quarter-final series and the three winners join 1st place Alberta in the Final Four. The other series produced upsets. #6 Trinity Western beat #3 Calgary and #5 Saskatchewan beat #4 Winnipeg, both series going three games. In next weekend's games, it will be Alberta v TWU and Manitoba v Sask in the semi-finals.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

The Bisons got a bye to the quarter-finals. The CW has two divisions (the 11 long-time conference members in one, and six newcomers in the other). The divisions blend for the playoffs. Four teams played the play-in round this weekend, with the two winners slated to join the 6 teams who had byes in next weekend's quarter-finals.

This weekend, both series went the distance and were very close. Alberta beat MacEwan and Regina beat Winnipeg. Next week the match-ups are:

Lethbridge at UBC
Fraser Valley at Manitoba
Alberta at Calgary
Regina at Thompson Rivers

CWUAA news: [Derek Ryan to NHL] : [All-Stars]

This was a rare event. The Evil Monkeys were outshot! The Banjomutts outshot the Apes 34-28 and Jordon Cooke stopped everything he faced. The Mutts scored power-play, even strength, penalty shot, and empty net goals. And had four different scorers. This ended a 6-game winning streak for the Monkeys. Too many people had the Monkeys pencilled-in as champions, after having swept aside the Mutts a couple weeks ago. However, the Monkeys are missing something this year. They would still be favoured against any team other than UNB at the nationals. But they are not invincible.

The news links are worth a look. Former Monkey Derek Ryan has made it to the NHL. And this year's all-stars were announced. Included were Bisons Jordan DePape (1st team forward), Adam Henry (rookie defence), and Brett Stovin (rookie forward). It is noteworthy that five 5th year Monkeys were selected to either the 1st or 2nd teams. The Bisons would have liked to see Shaq Merasty picked. Here are the complete selections:

First All-Star Team
Name / Position / University / Year / Hometown
Jordon Cooke / G / Sask / 2nd / Leduc, AB
Jordan Rowley / D / Alberta / 5th / Edmonton, AB
Kendall McFaull / D / Sask / 3rd / Rosetown, SK
Tyler Fiddler / F / MRU / 5th / Prince Albert, SK
Jordan DePape / F / Manitoba / 3rd / Winnipeg, MB
Kruise Reddick / F / Alberta / 5th / Manor, SK

Second All-Star Team

Matt Hewitt / G / UBC / 3rd / New Westminster, BC
Thomas Carr / D / Alberta / 5th / Edmonton, AB
Jordan Fransoo / D / Sask / 2nd / North Battleford, SK

All-Rookie Team

This game went Wednesday night. UQTR has been the class of the OUA this year and after facing two mediocre opponents they now face a tougher test. Moving to home ice helped the SMUskies stave off a sweep. However, it must sting to blow a 3-0 lead, which is what they did in Game 4. The Jeremies thus move to the final and secure a berth in the nationals. The SMUskies qualify as hosts, and UPEI is officially toast.

The rookie-laden Mutts completed an unlikely run to a Canada West title with a convincing sweep of the veteran-laden 2-time defending national champs. What makes these results rare is that Alberta was outshot, albeit just by 31-28.

Both sides now advance to the nationals. Sask has to be seeded in the top 3, and Alberta will likely be seeded 5th, barring an upset loss by UNB.

The Pats have shredded the OUA so far. After losing to Queen's on January 8th, they have won 19 straight games. They are 6-0 in the playoffs. However, since a Quebec team cannot host the Queen's Cup, they will be the away team next Saturday in the conference final.

It is fitting that this series is going the distance. Both sides are mediocre bit have periodically teased with possibilities of better-than-averageness. After Sunday's game 3, one of these teams will host UQTR in the Qieen's Cup and be assured of no worse than a 4th seed at nationals. The other will have to win a road game at Carleton to become the 8th seed at the nationals. Pretty strange.

FWIW, the Urban Cowboys lost to UQTR 5-2 and to Carleton 4-3. Goof U lost to UQTR 2-0 but beat Carleton 2-0.

However, since a Quebec team cannot host the Queen's Cup, they will be the away team next Saturday in the conference final.

They (UQTR) have to travel to Ontario to play, but I believe as the higher seed they get home change in the game.

I lean towards Carleton winning their Bronze game. Carleton, as the higher seed, will host either UWO or GPH (one of them will have to travel to Ottawa to play which wont be easy).

This one was played on Sunday night. In the end the Urban Cowboys claim another OUAW title and are thus assured of nothing worse than a #4 seeding in the Univeristy Cup. Even though they were ranked only #19 after the regular season and the teams they beat were #25 Laurier, #29 Toronto, and #22 Guelph. They also get a break in that the Queen's Cup (the OUA conference championship) must be held in Ontario. So they will host UQTR on Saturday. I was not able to watch live due to my son's playoff series, which he won! IAE I have the impression that UNB got back to form and that the rest of the teams were good but not great this year. I can see where UNB is vulnerable. They were not as strong as last year's Apes.

My overall impression of the tournament was that the only team which did not belong was the Western Ontario Urban Cowboys. But somebody from the OUA West had to be there.

Hey there Bison fans. The reliable rumour mill is churning out some recruiting news. Coach Sirant has apparently secured the commitment of three very good players already. Hudson Friesen redshirted last year after 2 years in the NCAA with Anchorage Alaska, Quintin Lisoway has 4 years of Major junior experience and was an assistant captain with the Wheat Kings in his 19 year old year and finally Nick Zajac, captain of the Saskatoon Blades this past year has also committed. These are exciting additions to a young and strong Bison roster with minimal losses from last year.

Good additions. But there is no need for NCAA players to redshirt any more. I believe FRiesen was one of last year's rumours.

And the only losses will be players who either drop out or are cut. Not one player used up his eligibility last year. Senior night was cancelled!
