Although Russia suffered just one overtime loss in the preliminary round of the 2014 IIHF U18 World Championship, their eight points only tied them for second with Sweden in Group A, two points behind Canada.
Russia opened the playoff round against the Czech Republic, who also finished the preliminary round with eight points. The Russians weren't sporting the high-powered offense that they sometimes bring to this tournament, while the Czechs have iced a lineup that has been stronger overall than other, recent rosters.
