I'll probably be there for a few days of it, although it clashes with the Select 15 camp aka the most important one to me, so we'll see what happens.

Just curious, are you scouting for someone now?

Risto, Zads and Grigo I expect to see, but what about Girgs? Armia graduate?

Depending on our upcoming draft haul, this development camp could go down as an all-time great collection of future Sabres. The level of competition will be very high. A preview of our present-future philosophy of having new waves of young players challenging the big guys each season.

Girgensons will definitely be there, at least going by the standard criteria. Armia should be there too.

Sunday, July 13 - Sunday, July 20 - Canal Fest - Tonawanda/North Tonawanda.

Thanks for the reminder - I usually go River Road etc - on the way to the First Niagara Center. Will skip that way if I go to any of the Development Camp activities. Plan on going to one of the practices and the scrimmage.

Although for the scrimmage, I'll be getting there late - 6:45 pm ET - as the soccer team I help coach has practices on Tuesday nights - 5:00 pm ET. (Our practices usually ran for an hour and fifteen minutes - takes about 20 minutes or so to get from where we practice to the FNC.) Since its the summer, we could always schedule it for a half-hour earlier or so. (I know one of the other coaches and some of the girls we coach like hockey so maybe we can make it a group event and attend the game together.)

At least the scrimmage isn't a Thursday night - no way I can attend as we have our games on those nights - 6:45 pm ET starts. Speaking of soccer, glad this happens after the World Cup ends. I'm a soccer junkie and it would be tough to miss a meaningful game to attend a practice or a scrimmage.

After looking back at the 2013 development camp roster, here are my early thoughts on the 2014 roster:
  • Goalies: I'm thinking there'll be 4-5 goalies and I'd expect at least three of the five previous goalies to be in attendance (Makarov, Petersen, Ullmark). The health of Lieuwen (concussion) remains unclear and could push that number to four if he's symptom-free. Knapp's the fifth goalie from last summer and has seen his ELC expire, so he's "graduated" from the camp roster regardless if he's re-signed or not. Lastly, add a 2014 draft pick to that mix of four to make for potentially five goalies.
  • Defense: I'm thinking there'll be 12 defensemen again and I'd expect three LHD (Austin, McCabe, Zadorov) and four RHD (Florentino, Gauthier-Leduc, Pysyk, Ristolainen) to return. This will leave room for five draft picks and/or invites. Not expected to return are: Czuczman (NYI), MacKenzie (grad), McNabb (LAK), and Ruhwedel (grad). Adams didn't attend last year and I wouldn't expect him there this year either.
  • Forwards: I'm thinking there'll be 24 forwards, enough to roll eight lines, with up to 17 returning (Bailey, Baptiste, Catenacci, Compher, Girgensons, Grigorenko, Hurley, Isackson, Jacobs, Kea, Locke, Malone, Navin, Peterson, Possler, Sundher, Varone). I can see Girgensons (grad) and Possler (knee) being excused though, with five probable additions in Armia (excused), Carrier (acquired), Fasching (acquired), Larsson (excused), and Schaller (injured). Not expected to return are: Nelson (UFA) and Parker (LAK).
Buffalo has eight draft picks to supplement the roster projections above, so it'll be another lean year of invites (4-6) to fill a roster of 40 or so. The Prospects thread aggregating all 2014 NHL summer camp invites can be found here. Looking back, Buffalo invited these five players last year:
  • Andrew Black: 2013-14 Colgate Univ. NCAA 38 8 6 14 20 -4
  • Kevin Czuczman: 2013-14 Lake Superior State Univ. NCAA 36 10 11 21 73 -7; New York Islanders NHL 13 0 2 2 14 -5
  • Tyler Gjurich: 2013-14 San Francisco Bulls ECHL 2 0 0 0 -5 0; Columbus Cottonmouths SPHL 3 0 1 1 0 -4; Nipissing Univ. CIS 4 1 1 2 2
  • Alex Iafallo: 2013-14 Univ. of Minnesota-Duluth NCAA 36 11 11 22 10 -1
  • Alex Lepkowski: 2013-14 Rochester Americans AHL 8 0 0 0 0 0; Greenville Road Warriors ECHL 1 0 0 0 0 0; Oshawa Generals OHL 25 0 4 4 37 0
As previously noted, Czuczman signed an ELC with the NYI, so he won't be back, and I wouldn't expect Gjurich back either. I could see Black, Iafallo, or Lepkowski getting invites again, but with the change at GM, there could be others targeted for invites. Some of the WNY'ers vying for invites could be: goalies Steve Racine (Michigan, NCAA) and Mike Rotolo (RIT, NCAA); defensemen Christopher Bradley (RPI, NCAA) and Vincent Muto (Niagara, NCAA); and forwards Cole Bardreau (Cornell, NCAA) and Mark Zengerle (Wisconsin, NCAA).

It wouldn't surprise me if Murray is sowing seeds with the NCAA UFA-to-be's for next season with this camp. There is so much opportunity for forwards especially and Murray has been part of a couple aggressive front offices in regards to those sort of things. Sometimes it works, sometimes not... but it can certainly be worth the gamble. Zengrele and his offensive skills appeal to me considerably.

Good info. Thanks.

Yeah, I updated the OP with tables like last year too. I'll get to updating the draft one later this week.

Yeah, the only thing about Zengerle that gives me pause is his age, as he's already 25. As for invites in general, I project up to 41 players already, so I think there'll be very few of them unless there are some unforeseen excuses, graduates, and injuries.

I only went one day last year and didn't see the scrimmage, but it was easily the best collection of talent I've seen. This year will be more of the same. Most of the talent will be returning, and we'll have a #2 overall pick in the mix as well. I hope to go to the scrimmage.

Maybe the scrimmage should be Sabres dev camp vs their veterans :sarcasm:
