There is some speculation (on the Sharks) board based an off hand comment dropped to a fan by the Detroit GM may mean that the Sharks could be hosted by the Wings (at the Big House?) perhaps next season.

...the Sharks? Why? Why not an actual rival with some kind of history behind it like the Avs or the Hawks or something? Even the Preds or the Jackets would make more sense.

The NHL is getting more incompetent with these outdoor game matchups every passing year.

1994: Sharks win 7 game series against #1 Detroit in their first playoff appearance.
2010: Sharks win 1st round series against Detroit
2011: Sharks win 2nd round series against Detroit

(And I refuse the list the series they lost to Detroit.:D)

Mod note - I moved discussion about possible future venues/teams from the 2012 WC thread to here. (Let's reserve that thread for what's actually happening in about a month. Let's use this thread for speculation on who/where will happen next.)

I can see the NHL giving the Capitals a Winter Classic, and why not? They have a good team, a lot of fans and has played in the Winter Classic before. Who would they play though, Tampa Bay?

Buffalo and Boston would be my first two guesses. Simply thinking of teams that would draw well nationally more than teams that have actual rivalries with DC though.

Still holding out hope for a Chicago/St. Louis WC in 2013, though I'm about 95% positive that that has no chance in hell of happening....

Here is what I think is practical and would be nice for the next few classics (bear in mind, every road team is guarenteed a future home classic, so the New York Rangers and Detroit Red Wings are due):

Buffalo at Detroit
Chicago at Minnesota
OR Chicago at St. Louis
Boston at New York Rangers
OR Boston at Washington

They all pale compared to the Detroit-Colorado playoff matchups during the golden years of their rivalry, though.

Now that's one event at the Big House that I'd consider attending. :D

I think a Sharks-Wings match would be great. This also would be a good chance to feature a Canadian team without losing much of an audience as a Wings/Big House event would carry things well methinks. How about Wings vs Toronto?

I'm amused that Hockey fans who don't even live near Ann Arbor or aren't even Michigan fans are calling it the Big House. Has it become the Montreal Forum of Outdoor Hockey Arenas? Calling it the Big House normally offends the heck out of people who like football teams other than Michigan.

Unfortunately, Michigan Stadium will probably only do college games, Comerica Park is more likely for the Wings, as cool as running Michigan Stadium is. The University seems pretty picky about letting third parties like the NHL use their facilities.

David Brandon would probably beg the Wings to host it there, are you kidding? The university community in general would be aghast, but we're talking about a guy who wants to host weddings at the place.

But in the end, Comerica makes a lot more sense.

Sure. We could use the 2 points. You cant stop the Ghosts of Teeder Kennedy, Syl Apps & Billy Barilko outdoors... But ya, a San Jose vs. Red Wings game would be brilliant. I can see all kinds of wonderful merchandising opportunities for Amway on that dealeo. Mebbe a pre-game event featuring the NutriLite sponsored San Jose Eathquakes and the wives of Red Wings players with "Special Guest" Paulina Gretzky & her Facebook friends. Huh?. Titillating must see event for every red blooded American & Canadian Boy. PPV. Imagine those revenues?. :)

That's the truth and amusing, because as a Michigan student I come across tons of people who drink the U of M athletic department kool-aid (Or flavor-aid) and claim that David Brandon loves tradition and that Bill Martin was the guy ruining the University. (In fairness, they both were/are.)

I can't stand much of anything Brandon has done especially bringing the good ole boys like Governor Snyder into athletic activities, but I'd be fine if he brought the NHL to Michigan Stadium. (I'd also be fine with Pro Wrestling too, but that might finally get him kicked out of his office of patronage.)

~Everyone~ knows it's the Big House. What this "Michigan Stadium" of which you speak?

Don't count U of M stadium out though. Back when Chicago was awarded the game at Wrigley, the Wings had lobbied the NHL to do an outdoor game, and I recall Michigan Stadium coming up as a potential site. It's certainly feasible and 'has been done'. There is ZERO appeal to Comerica Park.

Well if I'm still in AA, you can come down and we can take in the halftime entertainment together. :naughty:

Is there any other stadium called the Big House? I'd think football fans nationwide know exactly which stadium that is, no different from the Horseshoe.

You're the first person I've ever heard be "offended as heck" by a well-known stadium nickname.

If the NHL is just going to keep re-using the same 5 teams or so for this, then the Winter Classic is simply going to become a regular NBC game played outside in less than stellar conditions.

Red Wings in talks with NHL to host outdoor game within next two seasons

http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2011/12/red_wings_in_talks_with_nhl_to.html

DETROIT -- The Detroit Red Wings are in deep discussions with the NHL about hosting an outdoor game within the next two seasons.

MLive.com has learned the Red Wings expect to host the annual Winter Classic either next season or in 2013-14.

The Red Wings would prefer to have the game at Comerica Park, home of the Tigers, also owned by Mike Ilitch. But it might take place at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor due to its huge capacity.

The stadium hosted the "Big Chill at the Big House" on Dec. 11, 2010, attracting a world record announced crowd of 113,411 in the game between Michigan and Michigan State.

How timely!

I still think the marketing/promo potential for NBC is superior if Michigan Stadium is used. It holds the record for the largest outdoor hockey audience ever, plus the appeal of putting an NHL game in a venue that can break that record would be intriguing.

With Ilitch Holdings being the facility operator of Comerica, I can understand the desire to use that facility, but it can only house 41K. With the NHL limiting tickets to each group, the potential at the Big House is clearly superior.
