Is this serious? Maryland, DC and Virginia are all southern states. DC is a southern city. It is not northeast, that is Washington Post Magazine propaganda.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_United_States

I bet you think Delaware is part of the northeast as well.

there's the ultra technical, old timey definition of the South as anything south of an imaginary line, and then there's the real world where cultural relationships are just as important as actual geography.

Go tell someone from Alabama that Miami's a southern city.

What amazes me even more is that people on here can't get this simple concept down....the NHL is a business & will act accordingly. It isn't a type of league where everyone gets a trophy either. The teams already involved in the rotation will stay there for one simple reason: money. So until, other teams either get really good or start to have a national presence, they will not get into the WC discussion...

the Wings are, by any objective measure, the most popular team in the United States. :help:

You could also easily have a blizzard so bad they have to cancel the game. I've been stuck in snow on the beltway that caused me to have to stay overnight a week before Christmas. We're not talking about Florida here, the probability of fluke warm and cold spells is going to balance out with the overwhelming likelihood of moderate coldness.

Average highs and lows in DC at New Year's are 44-25. That's all of about 5 degrees warmer than Boston and Pittsburgh. It was 52 degrees and wet during the 2011 game, so there's no particular reason to think that outdoor ice in DC would fare any worse.

5 degrees is a big deal.
Keep in mind that is AVERAGE.

It is too far south. It doesn't get cold enough in DC save a blizzard every now and then but they don't have the consistent winter that NY, Boston, Michigan, minnesota get

I'm saying. DC is the richest region, but its not the north east.

This shouldn't surprise anyone. When the Caps were in Pittsburgh, Leonsis let it slip that the league promised Washington they could host one in the next 2-3 years.

Agree, shouldn't be a surprise, but I wouldn't say he let it 'slip'; he has made the point several times stating this to be the case (and others in the org. have said the same.)

One Western Conference team has hosted WC (and both competitors were from WC - and original 6). :shakehead

Perhaps they should rename this the Eastern Conference Winter Classic? :sarcasm:

I've been saying Sharks at Caps would make a great Winter Classic. Finally an INTER-conference matchup, star studded, classic east coast vs. west coast matchup. Many reasons to like this.

What's with people thinking Avs/Wings is still an actual rivalry?

Exactly. Wings biggest rival right now, outside of its division, is easily the Sharks. Probably the premier rivalry in the NHL that isn't a divisional rivalry (yes, IMHO, it's bigger than Pens/Caps which is more media driven than actual play on the ice driven) Sharks/Wings at the Big House makes tons of sense. Plenty of hatred and history (recent and past) between the teams.

P.S. I have a funny feeling that NBC is airing Sharks at Wings this year as a test for a potential WC. I think if they like the ratings for that game (both national and the local markets of the teams), they'll be more open to Sharks at Wings at the Big House. I just hope the Bay Area will tune in for that Sharks/Wings NBC game this season at 9:30am PT for the sake of seeing this awesome WC matchup.

5 degrees doesn't make things go from "cold" to "hot".

Average temp on New Year's in Pittsburgh (30), Boston (31), New York (33) and Washington (33.5) are not so drastically different as to affect ice quality. And Washington doesn't get any more rain on average at that time of year either (Pittsburgh actually gets the least of the group... go figure).

New jersey/nyi sucks

The Sabres, by virtue of missing the playoffs the year they hosted the WC "sucked" and the Blackhawks, by virtue of missing the playoffs the year before they hosted the WC "sucked." Essentially, prior record doesn't mean anything.

New Jersey would have an easier job of hosting than the Islanders in a hypothetical sense. At least NJ has the New Meadowlands (despite its unlikely use) and Red Bull Arena (which may not be properly equipped).

tbh, the novelty of the Winter Classic is starting to wear off. First year it was really cool because it was new, but each year it has gotten increasingly less exciting and interesting, especially now that they're repeating teams.

they oughta just do Chicago and Detroit at the big house, make it the biggest/best WC yet, then retire it for a while. but of course they won't because it draws in the $$$.

I bet you think Delaware is part of the northeast as well.

Virtually no one in D.C., Washington Post extremities included, cares whether or not D.C. is considered part of the Northeast I can assure you. Some people delineate the country that way (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northeast_megalopolis, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northeast_Corridor, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-speed_rail_in_the_United_States), other people consider it the Mid-Atlantic, and in the end it doesn't have an appreciable affect on anyone's life here or in any other region.

The implication that the Washington Post (editorial board I assume) is trying to beguile people into believing that D.C. is in the Northeast, ostensibly for the aggrandizement of the city I guess, is especially rich though. D.C. needs to be included in that mix for what reason, so that people around the world can associate the city with Providence?* You're talking about the Capital of the most powerful country in the world, one of the most affluent regions of our country (perhaps the wealthiest depending on the metric used), one of the largest metro areas in the country, one of the two most important cities in the country, one of the most internationally connected cities in the country and one of the most culturally vibrant regions we have. Why would anyone living or working here feel compelled to dissemble about a regional affiliation?

Anyway, as it pertains to the next WC I'm very excited about the prospect of D.C. hosting the event, but I would certainly understand if some other city was awarded next year's game. There are a lot of great potential hosts out there, each as deserving a candidate as any other (the Avs, the Red Wings, the Sharks, the Wild etc.).

*No disrespect to Providence of course which is a very beautiful city imo.

It bears mentioning that it's now been 20 years since the first outdoor hockey game. In Las Vegas. In September.

Washington's average high temp. in January is 42 degrees.

By comparison, that's less than 6 degrees warmer than Boston.

The next two will be in Washington and Detroit. Which one is which, we don't know, but it will be those two in some order.

Maryland is in the north. Virginia is in the South. In the Civil War, Maryland was loyal to the Union.

Maryland, Delaware, D.C., and Northern Virginia are really all more Mid-Atlantic than Southern or Northeastern, to be quite honest. Much more akin to Pennsylvania than they are with the Carolinas or anyone else, even Southern Virginia.

Great Post. I just see on a lot of other boards (not here) that many people from DC identify with the northeast when that has not been historically the case.

@Melrose Munch: Thanks for complimenting my post.

I will say that many people around the country, including a healthy amount of individuals in the Northeast have come to identify D.C. with the Northeast. It's a Northeast type of city, in literally the north-east quadrant of the country, that's connected to other cities in the Northeast by what everyone calls the Northeast high speed rail (NEC iirc). If you ask a random person in D.C. what region of the country they live in, they'll probably say the Northeast (probably), but I can't think of anyone that would take offense to being called a Mid-Atlantic denizen. It's no big deal.

if you want a heated debate about who's in what region, we can get into the Midwest... where people from Cleveland try to claim it's REALLY in the Northeast.

I would think you'll see Detroit be the host team next year, and Washington in 2013.

For those complaining about spreading the wealth around, it isn't going to happen. The game will be dominated by the big profile, US based teams.

Take a look at who the NBA has play on Christmas Day, it sure as well isn't the Clippers, Bucks or Kings.

Take a look and see who plays the Sunday Night football game on NBC, or the Sunday night Baseball game on ESPN. No Bengals, Jaguars, KC Royals or Pittsburgh Pirates to be found. Lots of Phillies, Yankees, Red Sox, Steelers, Cowboys, Patriots and Packers.

It's all about money and ratings.

i think it will be devils vs caps (at nationals park)
would like it on the mall but it wont happen i think.
what i think each team would wear
the devils would wear the white 80's devils jerseys (maybe with some elements of rockies and scouts included)
the caps would wear the red jersey from the 70's and 80's (and some of the 90's). might have elements from the other jerseys they wore (and i would love to see them have something from the teams before the caps, like the washington lions and washington presidents). maybe on the lines of this:
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b96/goalieboy82/Adelaide-Heritage-2006.gif
see the lines on the on the left side that are different colors, that is for the SANFL clubs before the crow (of the AFL).
ps, i am a north melbourne supporter and not a crow supporter.
