NHL - The Washington Capitals could be a host for the 2013 Winter Classic - t.co/44lWXjHw

One Western Conference team has hosted WC (and both competitors were from WC - and original 6). :shakehead

Perhaps they should rename this the Eastern Conference Winter Classic? :sarcasm:

Tough to say who the opponent could be for a "rivalry" aspect. Pittsburgh, Philly, Boston would all seem premature having been in 2 already. Maybe Tampa?

If they decided to go with a non-rival, a western team would be a no-brainer. Either the Hawks or Sharks. Maybe the Kings.

Have you ever been in DC in January? It's not hot at all.

Yes it is, you can easily have it 55-60 and balmy. Easily.
It's like planning a beach trip in September, it is a toss up between 85-90 and sunny, or 70 and wet.
    Bad call.

    Let Detroit have it.

You could also easily have a blizzard so bad they have to cancel the game. I've been stuck in snow on the beltway that caused me to have to stay overnight a week before Christmas. We're not talking about Florida here, the probability of fluke warm and cold spells is going to balance out with the overwhelming likelihood of moderate coldness.

Average highs and lows in DC at New Year's are 44-25. That's all of about 5 degrees warmer than Boston and Pittsburgh. It was 52 degrees and wet during the 2011 game, so there's no particular reason to think that outdoor ice in DC would fare any worse.

What an effing farce. Let's go over it again...

    Pittsburgh @ Buffalo
    Detroit @ Chicago
    Philadelphia @ Boston
    Washington @ Pittsburgh
    New York @ Philadelphia
    TBD @ Washington

It's almost as though they skipped something in there... surely not the city with the baseball stadium owned by the NHL team owner, where 37,000+ showed up to watch the Frozen Four final just a year and a half ago, in the same metro area with the town that got over 110,000 people to a college hockey game just this past December? Where you can guarantee freezing temperatures? Oh, yes, and it's also the 11th largest media market in the country and one of the driving forces in NHL ratings.

Please don't do it at FedEx Field. That place is terrible.

This shouldn't surprise anyone. When the Caps were in Pittsburgh, Leonsis let it slip that the league promised Washington they could host one in the next 2-3 years.

I was under the impression originally (and wrongly?) that the idea was going to be where the WC alternated between East and West each year for hosting.

Does anyone know if that was ever a plan? Or was it always intended as an "east coast thing"?

RFK Stadium makes the most sense. No scheduling conflicts like with FedEx Field, and better sightlines for fans compared to Nationals park. I know it's a dump, but it would work better than another ballpark.

  14. What schedule conflict, AS if the skins are going to the playoffs

snowy weather =/= good ice conditions...

to clarify... weather favorable for snow is not necessarily favorable for good ice. You need constant weather below 32 degrees to set up a good rink. A fluke snowstorm doesn't do that.

I hope Pittsburgh aren't involved in a rematch.

If Washington do get to host it, I reckon they should play against New Jersey Devils or the New York Islanders.

I didn't realize NHL arenas were kept below freezing in order to have good ice surfaces :sarcasm:

The point was simply that it's crazy to say it's "hot" and "balmy" in DC in January. From a logistical standpoint it doesn't really matter whether the temperature is above freezing since the ice isn't being frozen naturally anyway.

NHL arenas are generally kept about 58F I believe. But there is no sun beating down on it all day before a game either.

And yes the quality of the ice is very dependant on the weather regardless of how they make it. If its 70 degrees outside by the time the 3rd period rolls around the ice will be virtually unplayable. The last game is a prime example. The ice was disgusting.

IMO they should do away with it. Its poor quality hockey. Ofcourse NBC likes it, which is why you'll never see Nashville play Buffalo in a winter classic.

    previous/scheduled wc's
    08 - Buffalo
    09 - Chicago
    10 - Boston
    11 - Pittsburgh
    12 - Philly

    possibilities:
    -St paul
    -Detroit
    -Columbus
    -New York City
    -Newark
    -Denver
    -St louis
    -Washington

The coldest period in the northern hemisphere is the last two weeks of january and the first two weeks of february. If the WC was moved to February 1st it would make it more plausible in places like st louis or denver.

    1) 70 degrees would be pushing DC's record high, so that is even less likely than the whiteout-blizzard scenario.

    2) The ice was fine in the 80-degree outdoor game in 1991.

Exactly why it shouldnt be in DC. Remember what a disaster the WC was this past winter? My girlfriend is from DC and has family who live there and you guys dont have winter. At best you guys have a couple weeks of a cold snap with temps in the 20s. You cant plan a WC around weather like that.
Its time for someplace that has real winters to host a WC. Minnesota is long overdue, IMO and its a slap in the face that they havent gotten to host one yet.

2013 Winter Classic should go to Detroit

Redwings vs WIld/leafs/Hawks/blues and play it at the Big house with over 100,000 people. They could easily sell it out especially if its leafs Redwings as plenty of leafs fans would make the trip to help fill the place up. Set a record for an nhl game. It should be a no brainer for the nhl.

Don't give it to Washington its too warm and Im sick of the Crosby Ovechkin showcase.
