Latvia came into the 2013 U18 World Junior Championship hoping to at least equal that country's performance at the 2012 version of this tournament.
But Day 1 was probably not the start that they had hoped for, as the Latvians were blanked by Finland, 7-0, in the opening game at Bolshoi Ice Dome in Sochi, Russia. Finland jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first period and never looked back, outshooting the Latvians by a 42-21 margin.
