More discussions here.

Bozak is skating and Kadri's suspension is short-term. I don't think their return will make McClement available, but it might make Jerred Smithson a possible trade target. Great on the PK, good on the boards and excellent face-off guy who is right-handed. Gives us another RH option for face off specialist when Halpern is hurt. Can play RW too.

McClement has been Gordon for Toronto, and their center depth is hurting right now. No way any team would be able to pry him away.

Think we could find a deal for Jay McClement with Toronto?

I think that this is the type of deal where we could offer Schlemko, but I think it may be a hard sell for the Leafs.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind going after Smithson either. He's only played 3 games with the Leafs so far this season, so the asking price should be very minimal. 550K salary this year. Career .550 FO% in the dot and a very good PKer. Should have no problems fitting into Tippett's system.

Why can't we try a solve our PK problem from within instead of always trying to trade or sign everyone's cast offs?

We picked up Halpern, so I don't think we have an interest in Fiddler, unless the Stars would take Halpern in a trade and retain a little of Fiddler's salary.
I don't even think we should target him. I'm just saying if you want a fourth liner, he's better than Patrick Eaves. Eaves is not still the player he once was. I'm fine with forcing Tipp's hand and making him use what we already have.

He's like a 35 year old David Moss who can win face offs, but never actually had any of the scoring ability. Haha.

Meh. We are talking about the 4th line, after all. And all of Moss, Korpikoski, Halpern and Vermette are good PK guys. Just doesn't hurt to have a little insurance. Especially given Halpern's age and injury history.

We've also got younger legs that could get some time there which would help keep those guys fresh and maybe even *gasp* develop them.

Of course that's the ideal solution. But Tippett has shown no indications of going that route so far. He wants to use veterans on shutdown situations. Doesn't hurt to get additional veteran insurance.

Yeah. He won't even use Chipchura in spot duty for shutdowns/PK. Someone was talking about it in the GDT last night, but it seems odd that despite signing a 3 year deal Chip hasn't seen his role increased even when there are injuries.

Well basically everyone has said since camp that he's been outstanding. Dunno how he's performed in the A.

Probably won't see game action though.

Yeah, and Yip played his fair share of PK duty throughout his career (not so much in Nashville, but definitely with Colorado). We also have Brandon McMillan in Portland, whom we acquired in the Lombardi trade to Anaheim; he's more or less a smaller Korpi who was a key cog in their PK a few seasons ago and he's also been totally MIA for us.

Of course in Tippett we trust. Maybe it's just injuries. But I think we can still question his personnel decisions.

McMillan or Werek + a 7th would be sufficient to land Smithson according to Leafs HFers. If our PK continues to have issues I'd consider pulling the trigger on that easily.

Whoa.

Phoenix Coyotes ‏@phoenixcoyotes 10m
#Coyotes Recall Defenseman @Cmurphy5 from @TheAHL. Read more: http://*******/HXONvA

I'm reading into it like this - Morris is still out, although closer to returning. Michalek went out of the last game. Those are two of our most stay-at-home physical defensemen on the team. Since Murphy fills that role more than Gormley, he's getting the call-up.

There could be a deal out there that could be had, and the idea of picking up Fleischmann is not a bad one. I am not convinced that this improves the Yotes current shortcomings, though. And that's why I'd be more skeptical that this involves a trade, but we know that this would make sense on several levels.

Yip actually never played any significant time on the PK at the NHL level. I thought I remembered him PKing also, and was surprised when I looked it up that he hadn't.

Just looked at his SH TOI in Colorado, and you're right. Really surprising.

Still, my point on McMillan still stands.

With Z and DMO out, there is no way Klesla is a healthy scratch. He would have had to piss tip off for that big time. I think Klesla is being traded between now and the AVS game. He is gone, hopefully for the top 6 forward we covet...
