The other reasoning I believe was that they shortened the AHL season to 76 games, but extended the length of time, I.E. AHL regular season actually ends this weekend, offset from the NHL. They did this because they found that the grind of getting 80 games was too much for the development of the players. So a few years back they eliminated 4 games in a week from the schedules and in order to do that they needed to lengthen the season. They shrunk the first round so they wouldn't be playing into August.
