The Tampa Bay Lightning, which traditionally holds training camp at the Ice Sports Forum in Brandon, has at least considered moving it out of town this year. Orlando and Estero are possible destinations. It also could be held at the Tampa Bay Times Forum.

Eww...Estero? Doesn't the team know what's going on down there? It's also Panther territory.

Besides with wonderful Orlando, Florida you have me in attendance.

A couple interesting things there.

Boucher says the length of camp will determine how many players are invited to training camp. Camp will also be more scrimmaging and not a lot of drills. And Marty pointed out that while everyone is talking about the importance of a strong start to the season, it's better to finish strong and head into the playoffs hot.

The Tama Bay Lightning, which traditionally holds training camp at the Ice Sports Forum in Brandon, has at least considered moving it out of town this year. Orlando and Estero are possible destinations. It also could be held at the Tampa Bay Times Forum.

"Until we know when we will start, how many days of practice and what our schedule will look like, won’t make any plans,” GM Steve Yzerman wrote in a text message.

Boucher, speaking generally, said he is searching for ways for players to quickly bond, especially considering what will be a short training camp.

“You’ve got to do some team building stuff,” he said. “You’ve got to get the guys enclosed. They have to be together all day.”

“I feel good,” Garon said. “I have not stopped skating or working out since pretty much the end of the season last year. A week maybe of training camp and I will be ready to go.”

Garon said he does not expect the short season to really play a role in the how the goaltenders approach the game.

“I think it is the same for everybody,” Garon said. “It’s just a matter of getting into game shape as quick as you can and working hard at it.”

In 94-95 season, only 5 teams (NYR, Buf, Chi, Dal, SJ) made post-season after enduring a losing streak of greater than 3 games. #nugget

I was actually thinking about scrimmages vs. drills earlier today and came to the conclusion myself that scrimmages would be better in this instance. I am a hockey genius. :sarcasm:

Let me explain how I came to this conclusion. Drills are theoretical intensonomics while scrimmages are applied, and application is the pudding.

This isn't the year to have a learning curve. Ain't nobody got time for that.

I don't know if that's Boucher's thinking, but it's the best I've got.

It has been more than a year since RW Dana Tyrell played an NHL game, but after four games with Slovakia's Banska Bystrica, he said his surgically repaired right knee is good to go.

"It feels great," said Tyrell, who had surgery in December 2011 and was cleared to play in November. "It took a long time to get it back to where it was and it's stronger than it used to be, so I'm at the point now where I'm ready to play hockey."
It sounds as if the plan still is for player development coach Steve Thomas to be in the press box during games as an eye in the sky. How much time he spends coaching on the ice and how he splits time with AHL Syracuse, where he has been during the lockout, is to be determined.

To be clear, he means the Tampa Bay Times Forum actually in Tampa proper and not the Brandon Ice Sports Forum in the Tampa area as opposed to not being held out of town, right?

Lightning GM Yzerman said Syracuse players to Tampa camp to be announced after Sat. Crunch game. Said no players to be scratched in advance.

The Lightning will skate Sunday and Monday at the Tampa Bay Times Forum and then move to Germain Arena in Estero for workouts Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Camp ends with a Jan. 18 practice at the Times Forum.

All practices are free and open to the public, though times have not been announced. Activities include a FanFest-type event on Sunday, and a Jan. 18 free lunch, courtesy of the team.

The decision to move camp to Estero — home of Tampa Bay's ECHL affiliate, the Florida Everblades — is not without worry it will alienate fans grumpy over the 113-day lockout. But W Marty St. Louis said a short camp heightens the need for team bonding and called the move "the right thing to do."

"We're trying to do what's best for the team to get as much success as early on as we can," St. Louis said. "That's one way to give back to the fans, getting wins. At the end of the day, I think they'll understand that."
GM Steve Yzerman said fewer than 30 players will be in camp.

Any guesses on invitees?

Yzerman said fewer than 30 players will attend camp.

Sean O'Donnell has been sighted skating in Tampa, IIRC. :sarcasm:

I could see a forward or two getting an invite. Maybe the off-chance Brett Clark gets a tryout.

We pretty much have the pieces we need. It's just a matter of finding the right combination.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Lightning make trades as soon as the league opens up for business though. There's been a lot of talk online from journalists about the time off giving GMs a lot of time to think about trades. Not discuss, mind you. That ****'s over the line during a lockout.

Wax philosphically about personnel makeup.

From EE and DC (informal practice):
Damian Cristodero ‏@LightningTimes
G Lindback participated in 45-minute workout. Looked sharp under a barrage of shots with no noticeable limitations from injured knee.

Erik Erlendsson ‏@erlendssonTBO
Guy Boucher makes his appearance to overlook upcoming #TBLightning scrimmage, flanked by Steve Thomas, who will serve with coach staff

Damian Cristodero ‏@LightningTimes
Lindback out for a second session, too. Guess he wasn't kidding when he said yesterday his knee is okay.

Erik Erlendsson ‏@erlendssonTBO
Again probably not by accident I'm sure: Malone-Stamkos-St Loius; Purcell-Vinny-Pouliot; Crombeen-Thompson-Hall; Pyatt-Wilson-Tyrell

Damian Cristodero ‏@LightningTimes
G Lindback plays entire 32-minute scrimmage. Left foot save 1-on-1 against Stamkos. Good 1st extended test for Lindback after knee injury.

That has me optimistic. I know a lot of the potential success the Lightning could have this season relies on Lindback and how Carle and Salo adjust and fit into Bouchers system but I really think a lot of people are underestimating the Lightning right now. (TSN and SI power rankings etc.)
